CCE freezes at 12 percent!

You're right Kryzzle.
In my last post i said i succesfully converted an AVI wich was causing hangs (Avisynth access violations) by converting it first to Huffyuv. Well, i tried on another one and it hanged.
And every movie i was trying i coudnt get to convert any (DivX AVI that is). I then reinstalled XP (i have the partition on CD - Norton Ghost) in about 15 mins and tryed again. I've been able to convert all of them even without patching CCE.
Maybe those Avisynth access violations are due to hd fragmentation, i dont know.

Well, everything is running smoothly now :)

What do you mean with "reproduceable parts", Kryzzle? F.e. my CCE 2.50 stops at 24% or 49% of "Scary Movie 2", which is said to be because of the ending credits. If that's the problem you've had I'd be curious to dig out my last image...

Hi to all those who have been contributing to this thread, and especially to dvd2svcd for all his work, without which i would still be using a VCR :) I recently discovered the joys of using DVD2SVCD in AVI mode (I do lots of capping from TV), only to find the same problems as many regarding the CCE freezing ... so here are some of the outcomes i have discovered during fairly intensive testing in the past few weeks, and over 3 different machines.
1: CCE doesn't appear to like Matrox video cards in the G4 series. Changing to a GeForce4 on one machine immediately stopped the problem of CCE freezing.
2: The CCE CRC patch generally should not be needed, if you are getting CRC errors, it is a sign of some other underlying problem.

I have yet to conclude tests on 2 other machines, both Intel P4s, but currently have dvd2svcd working flawlessly on a dual athlon 2000+, with CCE not CRC patched. Highest number of passes so far is 7 :)

I hope to conclude tests on the other 2 machines in the next week or so.

I would really like to know what video cards others that have been having the freezing problem are using.

Looks like I may be flogging a dead horse, as there have been no messages since my initial post, but in case there is even one person following this thread still:

I finally got around to changing the video card on the 3rd machine, which was running a Matrox G450, and would NEVER complete a DVD2SVCD run...

guess what .. with the geforce 4 ... 4x4pass encodes later ...

not a problem

I now have 3 computers 100% reliable using DVD2SVCD.

I had CCE freezing problems till I increased the difference of max and avg bitrate to a minimum of 200 kb/sec.
So I don´t think my "Asus AGP-V7100 Pro MX400 32MB GeForce2MX" is involved.

In my case, definately yes !

All 3 computers had Matrox video cards previously - a G400, a G450, and a G450eTV ... Only the G450eTV would ever actually finish an encode, but then only rarely. The PC which had the G450 NEVER completed an encode. I did try clean OS installs on every machine. As soon as i replaced the cards in each PC with the Geforce 4, all freezing stopped, and DVD2SVCD completes every time without fail.

No wonder I have so much grey hair :)

it seems there is a certain spot that cce doesn't like. It is where a black screen changes to a screen full of grey static and then the HBO logo. The only way to get around it seems to be to do the dvd2avi step manually and start after the HBO logo. No great loss, but a pain in the ***.

so...
Is there any way to set the dvd2avi start point from within dvd2svcd?

I second that I ripped all the episodes of Sex and the City without any problem. The key is NOT TO TURN ON ANTI NOISE filter. In fact I never use that in any of my rips and have never CCE crash problems. Also for all the TV serials, use Automatic detection under DVD2AVI tab and on conversion tab choose SMART DEINTERLACE filter with default settings.

I am afraid I tried without the noise filter, but it gets snagged as the HBO logo comes out of the static.

BTW, my source is NTSC. Is it wise to deinterlace, as the source is true interlaced material and that is the main reason I decided to convert to svcd instead of divx, as I can retain the interlacing. (or so I thought)

Did you try what I told you? I also had NTSC R1 DVD's.

How do you know that the problem is exactly at the point you are describing?

Open the DVD2AVI application and load the "D2V" file in it using LOAD PROJECT. Then whithout changing anything, Just choose SAVE PROJECT but save to a different loaction in your HD. When you do that a small window will come which will show you the statistics. In this windows look at the bottom left corner. You will see INFO written and write next to it, you will see and empty box. If the you P.E! or V.E! next to INFO box it means the following:

P.E! --> Program Error
V.E! --> Video Stream Error

If any of the above appears rip your DVD again and they still appear your DVD media is corrupted (probably 'coz of scrathes or dirty. Try cleaning and then ripping again).

I am experiencing a problem with Monsters, Inc. On two different machines, CCE freezes at 49%. One machine is running XP Pro and the other XP Home. Both have been recently upgraded to service pack 1.

This is the first time that I have encountered CCE freezing during any of my rips.

This has probably already been covered, but I had a thought - the Monsters, Inc. contains both the Widescreen and Fullscreen versions. Could there be some transposing of the files ripped from the DVD?

Anyways, I am trying the conversion this time with TMPG. I'll see how that goes.

Edit: Everything went fine using using TMPG. Although, I have not yet tried another DVD conversion using CCE since Monsters, Inc.

I ran into that problem once. Restoring the defaults in the Bitrate tab fixed my freezes. Don't know why, but it did.
