CCE freezes at 12 percent!

Ok i tried encoding this movie twice now and both times it just stops CCe at 12 percent complete. here is my log file!

@movieman what mrbass wants you to try is "safe mode" in the dvd2svcd encoder tab click on "safe mode VFAPI slow!" and then run your encode ,it has been know to solve some crashes with CCE.

Also do a search on "cce crash" and you should get tons of ideas on things that have helped others.

It did freeze (CCE) twice at 24%

But it did not give me any errors at all :( It just stopped from encoding

Yes that is the way to do it. I bet you can't get it to work because it has a hidden .txt extension. Change your folder settings so you can see the extensions, and remove the .txt and try again.

Actually it is really avs file not avs.txt

That is what Windows reports and i know it is avs too because when i saved it as in notepad, on the drop down that says file types, i selected the *.* so it will be .avs instead of .avs.txt

the file that you had me dl i did not put in the system32 older. I placed it in the avisynth sub folder in dvd2scvd folder. Just replaced the new one with the old one. It worked fine after i did that.

The file that is used is in the windows/system32 folder or windows/system folder. If you have another dll floating around there is the chance the system could use that one. It's not suppose to, but it does happen. Do a search on your HD for the AVIsynth.dll and erase everyone, but the one in the system32 folder or rename all of them to avisynth.dll.old so the system cannot become confused.

When you save a notepad file make sure you have "all files" selected and not txt when you save it. When you have txt selected as the file type it will append the .txt extension even if you tell it not to.

OK the avisynth.dll i downloaded from DVD2SVCD post is 200K

I searched for those files and found the following

C:\Windows\System 32 (200K)
C:\Windows\System (200k)
C:\Program Files\DVD2SVCD\Avisynth (192K)
C:\WINDOWS\system32\AVISynth (192K)

So i guess the last two are using the old version of the dll....

I had to do just that, even tho i copied the new dll file in to dvd2svcd folder and it did an overwrite of the old dll my system was still accessing the old dll file causing me the same problems, trust me the new avisynth.dll has alot of bug fixes.

edit: you are correct mary the new latest .dll will be (200k) the old one was (192k)

Marie: Ok, maybe mediaplayer was a bad suggestion to test it in since you're using XP. Could you try opening the version.avs in VirtualDUB or even TMPGEnc. In both you should be able to see the current avisynth version.

Then you are not using the version I directed you to use. Did you download the attachment from the other thread? Did you extract it into your c:\winnt\system32 folder. Otherwise, do as the others did, make a complete search on all your drives for avisynth.dll and delete/rename all you find. Then extract the avisynth from the downloaded attachment. After that try loading the version.avs in virtualdub. It must say 1.0 beta 7d before you have installed the right version.

Ok I did the next movie that i wanted to encode, already had the vob files on my computer. Got to about 32% in CCE and CCE froze. XP did not freeze, just cce. I have the new avisynth.dll (200kb) and it exist in only one spot (windows\system32) what else would be causing cce to freeze. Should i play around with the bitrate settings? thanks

We seem to be back to the old CCE freeze issue. Do a search on CCE freeze or CCE crash. There must be fifty posts on this issue. It's pretty common. We thought the new dll might solve it, but in your case it obviously doesn't.
A quick and dirty summary of what you will find.

Nobody knows what causes it and everything is just a guess.

If you have 2 sticks of ram remove 1.
Slow all you memory settings in your bios to a more stable setting.
Try another movie. Some movies are known to make this worse.
If the credits are there own chapter re-rip without them.
Try using safe mode and CCE 2.5
Try using safe mode and CCE 2.62
As a last option try TMPG.
Run the Prime95 torture test
Run the stress test created by DDogg
Run a memory checker like gold memory or mem86
If you OC slow the system down
Make sure you have resample audio checked on the frame server tab

Some people just cannot get CCE to work and nobody knows why. This was the main reason TMPG support was added.

Now try the mpeg2dec2 that tom berry worked on.

Put it in your dvd2svcd\mpeg2dec directory then go to the frameserver tab and choose this one instead of the old one. Note that this one has a 2 on the end of it.

I would rename it to the same as the old one if you decide to try it to insure DVD2SVCD has no misses on the file. Many programs depend on many others and you never know what could screw up.

I always just keep the old dll in the same directory, but name it .old. You could always forget to change it and the fewer dll's hanging around the better in my mind.
This way he also doesn't have to know how to edit an avs file.
Either way works I guess.

just to make sure please consider creating a text file in notepad with just the word VERSION in it. Save as version.avs and play it in media player (MP6.4 is best). Let us know what it says.

Also, it would be great if you could install this newer mpeg2dec and run the process on the SAME movie you had a freeze on above.

Ok, I used the new mpeg2dec2.dll file and still froze exactly at 32 percent. I tried creating that version.avs file and played it with tmpgenc, it gave me illegal stream error. It didnt play in media player but that prolly because of XP. I really dont think that this freezing is because of my system. I just made a brand new system. Its got 1.4 ghz tbird and crucial memory designed for the MSI board that i have. any other suggestions?

Actually it is your system. It can seem 100% perfect, but there is something slightly off. Most things don't care and that is what error control is used for, but CCE does care.

Have you tried a different source? Have you tried everything I asked you to yet? You don't mention the results of any of the tests. You don't mention if you tried it after removing one of the memory sticks. Try these things and post back. Unless you try what we suggest what is the point of asking for help?

Im not overclocked, i only have one ram stick, credits are not there own chapter, resampled audio is checked, where can i get the prime95 test and is it made for xp? gold memory doesnt work for xp.

What about mem 86, did you try that?

After everything there is always the chance you cannot use CCE. Some computers, yes computers even new ones, just won't work with it.

Right click on the avs file and select "open with">"choose program" and select the older mplayer 6.4 in the list. I think it is important to know the version of avisynth you are using.

I have XP and can play the AVS files fine in Media Player.

I always install some software before I start working so I wonder if one of these installs something to help it work?

I always install WinDVD and I always make sure I am completely up to date on all Microsoft Updates.

If that does not work do like ShinerSpoon said the older media player works.

Make an avs file that only has the word version in it and see what it says. Just open up notepade type version, save it as test.avs and make sure where it says to save it as a txt file you change that to all files. Then right click on it and open it with media player. If that doesn't work open it in the older media player in your \program files\windows media player directory

Make sure it says 1.07D. If it plays the 1.05 version make sure you only have 1.07D named dll.

You may want to try and make your memory timings less aggresive in your bios.
What motherboard do you have(specific make and model)? I will see if I can find some info on it and make some suggestions.

I have to stress that while all of these tests are helpful there are some people and some movies that just don't work on some computers with CCE.

I know how I would feel if I had these types of problems and I would hate it and be so frustrated.

I will run those programs tonite and determine if the memory is bad or incompatable(which it shouldnt be since it was designed for my board(MSI K7T 266 Pro). what would i do as far as making the memory setting in the bios less aggressive? thanks

Not meaning any slight, but you said you just got this board. I am curious since this is an older motherboard. The 266 chipset has been replaced with the 266a and now the 333. Did you just do a typo and mean the Pro 2? If it is not the Pro2 I would return the board. The 266 chipset had many bugs in it and the 266a blows it away in speed.


Have a look at this and make sure you are at the safest(slowest) settings.

I am assuming you mean the PRO 2 since the pro is an older board. If you did mean the PRO 2 have a look at this step by step setup guide including the bios settings. Pay close attention to the advanced chipset section.

I also have to say I highly doubt that memory was specifically made for that motherboard. I know Crucial and they have a list of compatibile memory and I am sure that same module will be listed for my motherboard as well.

I did not say the memory was bad or incompatible. What I said is that the memory timings(controlled by the motherboard) could be off a little. For 99.99% of programs this is not an issue, for CCE it is.

nope, it is the PRO board. I bought this board off of a friend cause my old board blew up. So they sold me this one. its shit you say? what should i do? should i try flashing the bios?

It's not crap, but the 266a is a much better chipset. Faster too. If you bought it off a shop or something then I would say to you return it, but since you bought it off a friend you probably got a good deal and the chipset does work, just a bit on the buggy side.
For the right price I would buy one.

Check that reference anyway. Since your friend had it first he may have tweaked it a bit. Most of the settings will be the same between the two boards. The only one I think is missing is 4 way interleave, but with 1 stick that makes no difference anyway.

Make sure you don't have 1T on that it's either off or at 2T
Make sure the memory is set to CAS 2.5 and not CAS 2

Their are others, but they are listed in the guide I linked to above.

You might want to flash the bios. That's always a good thing if there is a newer one out, but make sure you know what you are doing. A bad bios flash and you are hunting down a new bios chip.

All of this is grasping at straws. Agian some boards just won't run CCE.

If you can't get it to work in regular mode have you ever tried checking off safe mode on the encoder tab? It is slower, but some people are able to get this working when they can't get regular mode to work.

So what test would i run to determine exactly what the problem is? If this helps at all, my system has been doing a whole lot of restarting on its own. It happens at different intervals and at different times. Does this sound like a memory problem to u? i looked in the bios and the only options for ram are:

Configure SDRAM timings by :SPD
SDRAM Frequency :SPD (SPD,HCLK, or HCLK-33 i have SPD selected)
SDRAM CAS# Latency :2.5
SDRAM Bacnk interleave : Disabled
SDRAM 1T Command : Disabled

If I no for sure that its the board causeing me all this trouble ill just sell it and get a newer one. But i need to no for sure that its the board, so if you have any good solutions to determine the exact problem then i would like to no them. I need cce to work so ill do what i have to. It is not your hardware, not when it stops a 66%. You're using a CCE 3 pass right. Well, the problem is most likely the end credits. I bet they have a lot of black background. Black = High Bitrate = CCE freezes of unknown reasons. As a lot of people know, Shrek is one of those movies that almost always freezes CCE and yesterday I finally got my own Shrek DVD and I started to experiment. And I succeded in encoding it by doing it this way:

1. Download Tweak.dll from Donald Grafts homepage.
2. In the frameserver tab select "Edit avs as part of the encode.
3. When the AVS edit box pops up, just press save (not ok, not yet).
4. Open the AVS in VirtualDUB.
5. Move forward until the end credits starts. Write down the frame number. Move to the end of the movie and write down that frame number too.
6. Go back to the Edit AVS window.
7. Change it to this:

8. The bold text is what is important. Hit ok and you should be able to get your rip. It might seem a little difficult, but it is infact quite simple.
