You are right that it is odd for it to freeze at 66 percent. it was 3 pass. And another movie i did 3 pass froze at 32 percent. im gonna run the torture test tonite and then try encoding another movie. we will see what happens. thankyou dvd2svcd.

A computer rebooting on it's own is defenitely a real problem. I run my computer for weeks at a time without rebooting. It should never reboot on it's own. There is a serious problem if it does.

However it could be many things. Is there any error or blue screen?
Do you happen to get IRQ_LESS_OR_EQUAL to error then it reboots?
According to Microsoft and from all of my own tests this is a hardware issue. Most likely memory related. You must stop the computer from random reboots.

What size power supply do you have? If your power supply is less the 350 watts I would definately upgrade. T-Birds are power hungry.
Is this power supply AMD approved?

This may have nothing to do with your CCE problem, but it is definately a problem.

Go to this website and join their forum. www.amdmb.com They have a MSI forum. I am sure they can help you. It is one of the better sites on the internet for AMD based systems and they have not steered me wrong yet. Take my advice forget about DVD2SVCD for now. Until you get this system stable you should be doing nothing else.

I truly don't understand why you dismiss my suggestion :( Please try it before anything else. Don't focus on hardware, don't run anymore tests. Just do as I suggest, please.

@Markb: When my computer reboots, it looks like a blue screen is trying to show up, but it restarts to quick for me to see it. I just ran prime95 for 12 hours and got no errors. I also changed some bios settings, S.M.A.R.T for hard drives was enabled and so i disabled it along with some caching options that forum link u sent me said to. like i said prime 95 ran for a long time and hasnt shown any errors, nor has my computer restarted since then.

@dvd2SVCD: I will run it again usuing ur suggestion i just havent had the time yet. The editting that you want me to do, is that movie specific or will those be set for all the movies i do. will i have to find the credit frame and edit each time? if no, What are the chances that the 2 movies i do, right after one another both have freezing probles i.e.( 32% and 66%) Im just wondering if that is the problem or not. I would like to do a 3 movie to prove what the problem is. if it freezes at some number again especial at 33 or 66 then thats got to tell us something. Thanks a gain for all ur help and wonderfuil program. I will post again after i try ur suggestion.

I have same situation before.
And the problem still have even I try to upgrade to avisync 1.07d and change memory. Also I try to cut the credit part to solve such problem.

Maybe it's a spicific case for my PC. I fund a simple solution for this, that is change the max bitrate to 6000.
So Next time when u face freeze, just cancel the CCE status window.
The CCE still there, double click the item "xxx.avs" andchange the max bitrate.

I try many times and it's work.
But the only problem is the quality and file size will or will not influnce by the changing I really don't know.

did you set the dct precision in encoder/cce/advanced to automatic?
dont do this and set it to 8 or even 9 bits.
result? does cce still freeze at the end of a pass?

>Well, the problem is most likely the end credits. I bet they have a lot of black background. Black = High Bitrate = CCE freezes of unknown reasons.
wrong. black means _low_ bitrate in mpeg encoding!

>As a lot of people know, Shrek is one of those movies that almost
>always freezes CCE and yesterday I finally got my own Shrek DVD and
>I started to experiment. And I succeded in encoding it by doing it
>this way:
wrong.
its _not_ shrek which freezes cce, but propably the settings dvd2svcd does!
deselect linear quantizer scale, which belongs to mpeg1 - the nonlinear quantisation is one of the advantages mpeg2 has over mpeg1.
select zigzag scanning order and progressive frames for progressive input.
manually select 8 or 9 for dc decision, dont use automatic.
dont play around with the gop-settings! cce for itself doesnt allow higher settings as 3/4. i dont know what happens when dvd2svcd forces higher settings...

and another question to concern:
how did you remove the crc-checking in cce, which patch was used?
did you even remove this?

markrb
23rd April 2002, 05:22
@DVD2SVCD what I was saying is that there is a core issue with the computer if it randomly reboots as he stated. I cannot say whether or not this has anything to do with the CCE, but you must admit a computer rebooting on it's own is a problem that should be looked into.

I did not mean to dismiss your suggestion, but being a computer engineer I always try and solve any major hardware issues first. Until a system is stable you cannot expect programs to perform as they should. Random reboots can cause data and OS corruption that can adversly affect other programs. Until this is solved there is no point attempting to solve anything else.

@moviemandvd if you feel your computer is now stable then it is definately time to move onto more specific checking. Do what DVD2SVCD has suggested and pay close attention to when it freezes if it does. If it does continue to reboot on it's own then definately go to that forum I suggested and raise your issue with them. The computer is not working the way it should if it randomly reboots.

@gizmau I wonder were you are getting some of your info? If as you say it's the settings in DVD2SVCD that are causing this problem why is it that less then 5% of all the people that use this program are having problems with CCE freezing? Personally I use the defaults most of the times I encode and have never had CCE freeze for me.
All of the default settings in DVD2SVCD have been researched and are there to imrprove the quality of the video. Even though Linear Quantizer is for mpeg-1 video many find it actually helps for mpeg-2 as well, even though it shouldn't. You can find some discussions on this in the CCE forum.
This CCE freeze problem has to be the one most researched problem within the DVD2SVCD community and I highly doubt that these settings were not considered in all the time this has been going on.

If you have any specific proof a setting is an issue I am sure everyone here is all ears and we would gladly accept the help. If you have a computer that freezes in CCE using DVD2SVCD and then does not after you change the settings, any settings, please let us know what you did. Until such testing has been done I do not believe this is the case.

I must be missing something. I have read through the posts twice and I cannot find where it was mentioned the CRC patch was used. If it was used though it's probably the one linked to in the Q + A. It's a commonly used patch to disable the CRC error. Not a first choice, but it does help some people encode when otherwise they couldn't. Trying to get you computer to work without the patch is a first choice, but some cannot. Only a few people have reported problems after using it and it doesn't sound like this one.

Ok, Maybe black = Low Bitrate, it doesn't really matter. I know that it is very dark scenes that make CCE stumble. And it is a bug in CCE. Maybe it is some settings in DVD2SVCD forces CCE to stumble, but in my search I have not found anything that could fix this 100%, the settings which are default has proven itself to work perfectly in 99% of all cases. My guess is still that CCE somehow stumbles on very dark scenes be it too high bitrate or to low. No matter what, when CCE freezes during the passes it has always been because of very dark scenes.

The reason why I say Dark Scenes = High Bitrate is simply because when I use a Max Bitrate of 2530 and a Average Bitrate of 2167 CCE freezes. But when I use same Max Bitrate but an Average Bitrate of 1900 it doesn't freeze.

@markrb: Sorry, I didn't mean to answer in the tone that I did, I had merely focused on where CCE froze. The rebooting was for me a secondary thing. Anyway, you're right, it is always a good idea to solve the hardware issues first. The CRC patch Gizmau is refering to is on a German Forum where Gizmau is a Moderator. It is also a very good forum and Gizmau is very knowledgable, but I sometimes feel he's jumping on dvd2svcd because he feels you loose some of the control of what is happening compared to doing it manually.

@Gizmau: I too have converted many many dvds and Shrek and Scary Movie 2 is the only two movies I have ever had in my possesion that froze CCE. So this is not a common thing. And as I could read on the german UBB, you never experienced a freeze either. Nonetheless, if you look in the CCE forum here you will see that there are people who is doing all the steps manually and also gets a freeze in CCE. Also, I would like to apologize to you because my answer in UBB was uncalled for. I just got upset because you dismissed my suggestion a little brutal. But I shouldn't have made an angry face at you. I am sorry.

One last thing. If you in CCE select MPEG1 as the output then "Linear Quantizer Scale" and "Zipzag scanning order" are both invisible. So no matter what it says in the CCE users guide, those two selections is for MPEG2 only.

dvd2svcd

Gizmau is right. Total Black frames = very low bitrate. In fact it goes way under the min bitrate set by CCE. So my guess is that maybe, somehow CCE stumbles on those low bitrates, and by brighten them as I did I raise the bitrate, and CCE goes through the encoding without problems. Take a look at this (rather large jpg) picture:

Hi DVD2SVCD and gizmau,

I always switch the noise filter off, and I had no problems with Shrek. My CCE never had problems with any film. But I have to say, that I'am not on such a high level, as gizmau or DVD2SVCD. I decided that I don't need any extra filter, because I only make external copy's of high qualty films. Maybe it's a wrong decision but for me it works pretty well.

Seems like everyone is apologizing today.

@gizmau I hope you didn't take what I said as any form of attack it wasn't meant that way, but after reading it again I can see where it could be considered that way. It was poorly worded. I was just asking if you had any specific settings and had you tested it yourself.

We are pretty passionate about DVD2SVCD here.
I do agree that you loose a little bit of control with DVD2SVCD, but most of that is on purpose. The settings are hidden to safeguard newbies and in my personal opinion most of the other settings are not needed. In the latest version many new settings are now available, especially in advanced mode.

In my opinion it is by far the best thing going today.

Hi Gizmau,

first I want to mention that I never ever had a single CCE freeze with all my conversions done with DVD2SVCD - even Shrek and with the anti noise filter set at "2".

But I did quite some testing with the linear and the non-linear quantization method as I also was unsure in the past about this setting in D2S. This was after also reading many sources in the net and of course the CCE manual on that topic.

And this was discussed in here some time ago also and we came to the conclusion IIRC that with the linear quantizer scale the qunatization curve you can see in BitrateViewer or the advanced window in CCE is far more smoother than with the non-linear and this results in a better quantization scale with these low bitrates used for a SVCD.

But this might be totally different with the high bitrates that are used with a DVD - that's clear and in there I see the only advantage in a non-linear quantizer scale because it would allow the quantizer to do a better job during scene changes from very high action to some "still picture like" scenes - and that would not be the case if you force a linear quantization scale on it.

With the DCT precision - I think it is not set to automatic at default by D2S and with the GOP settings - hmm - CCE manual says the default is 3/5. So I don't know why you say only 3/4 is allowed as a maximum.

Greetings,
Gerti

@dvd2svcd

could you offer me an avi or something else which will crash cce for sure because of black scenes? i _never_ had such behaviour and i was unable to produce this error, no matter what i tried...

afaik the bitrate shown at 'advanced' doesnt need to be the bitrate used in the encoded file, because of padding which is performed when falling below the minimal bitrate (???). better watch the encoded stream with bitrateviewer from http://www.tecoltd.com or something similar.

maybe we should first make clear, that we _do_ have the same tools; an crc- or bit-by-bit-compare of the exe could maybe give a solution.
please suggest an usable crc-tool of your choice.

[UPDATE] produced checksum with win-sfv32 was E2453B7A

if you felt attacked from my answer against your suggested workaround: this was not my intension to do so! i am sorry as well...

>If you in CCE select MPEG1 as the output then "Linear Quantizer Scale"
>and "Zipzag scanning order" are both invisible. So no matter what it
>says in the CCE users guide, those two selections is for MPEG2 only.
right yo are - the _selection_ is only available for mpeg2, because mpeg1 does exclusivly offer linear quantisation, nothing else. nonlinear was introduced with mpeg2, and therefore it should be used, because it offers the possibility to quantise more precisly between 0.5 and 56, whereas mpeg1 offers only 1 to 31 steps. (hope i remember this right...)
concerning zigzag scan i was mistaken, sorry, my fault - it is available for mpeg1 as well; i mixed up with alternate scan.

@Gizmau: I am currently trying your suggestion about Anti Noise off, and so far the encoding of Shrek has gone further than before. This could be the culprit. Thanks (so far ;) )

gizmau
23rd April 2002, 19:21
the idea with the noise filter was just a kind of logical assumption, because i believe that black on dvd isnt really black: try the virtual dub coring-filter and wonder how it mixes up you black areas :^O this invisible noise (lets call so...) is amplified by your tweak.dll.

btw: maybe i never had this kind of cce-crash because of the fact, that i lighten using luminance-filter within dvd2avi. i was never really satisfied with its output, because it darkens the image. good for encoding, but worse to watch imho than the original dvd.
i usally edit within the .d2v the line 'Luminance=128,0' to 'Luminance=133,0'; i would say that this meets the original as close as possible.

is this some kind of the control i am scaring to loose, as you are talking about? ;)

but i would like to compare the .exe first in order to ensure not to be victim of a stroke of luck...

dvd2svcd
23rd April 2002, 20:28
@Gizmau: I did not mean to sound rude when I said you wanted more control of the settings, which you do get when doing the steps manually. The luminance you describe above is exactly one of those things you loose in an all-in-one solution as dvd2svcd are. I have full understanding for the people who wants to do it all manually. I did so too in the past, but I am a very lazy guy so I wanted to make my life easier and therefore I made dvd2svcd :)

And yes, I am quite sure that the thing you did with Luminance in dvd2avi could be the reason you never get a freeze. I think maybe I should implement that in dvd2svcd (so it can be adjusted).

ok read this long thread...phew. First off...I always uncheck anti-noise filter cuz I don't believe it's needed for dvds since they are a clean source to begin with. Also for the past week or so I've been using the avisynth.dll 1.0 beta 7d which dvd2svcd kindly compiled for us.

I've done well over 100 dvd rips on this machine so I know it's not hardware related. 2 movies in paticular freeze CCE 4 pass vbr. Scary Movie and Truman Show.

I've been logging CCE the past week or so and these are the findings.

CCE log of truman show...crashes at 7%. Note I'm attaching the entire 17KB cce log in case anyone wishes to view it.

sorry but I'm an idiot....only the vfapi mode didn't select YUY2 or RGB. As far as I can tell there's nothing to tell from the ccelog. My mistake.

So now I'm sticking with my old theory that there is a minor scratch and it didn't rip the whole thing perhaps. Since the first vob on both movies that crash are 2KB less than the 2nd or 3rd vob files.

markrb
23rd April 2002, 21:55
@gizmau would adjusting the luminance as you say to do be the same as using the tweak.dll filter for avisynth to tweak the contrast and brightness?

Mark

gizmau
23rd April 2002, 22:17
@markrg

its compareable to the tweak.dll-avisynth by dvd2svcd, but i dont try to fix/workaround something strange by only influencing a little part of the movie with hard to calculate frame numbers ( ;) ).
i do compensate the behaviour of dvd2avi in general, which alters the image by darkening (dont know exactly why this happens) - and this affect the whole movie.

whatever, i never crashed cce in multipass, whether i rised luminance or not.

dvd2svcd
23rd April 2002, 22:23
I have now implemented the DVD2AVI Luminace property into dvd2svcd.

Anyway, it seems that deselecting Anti Noise Filter fixed the Shrek. I can't believe it's that simple, but alas, it seems to be :) Thanks Gizmau :)

I am looking forward to trying this. I have been using the Tweak filter lately to brighten the image a bit. I never considered it a problem with DVD2SVCD or CCE, but more with one of my players. One of them always did a nice job while my other DVD player put out a darker image.

Here's a coincidence. Ripped about 20 movies with no problems. Started ripping Truman Show last night and it's freezing at 14%. But, I do my movies 1/2 of the chapters at a time, and this disc has a pretty even split at around 51 minutes.

So, we might be freezing at the same point if you're doing yours all-at-once...?

sorry dvd2svcd..didn't see your post till just now...hehe
ok I'll rip a small chapter and let it go through....the whole process goes fine until the very end.

Lemme guess it's cuz I use the 'Set Folder Structure' and it's probably looking for the titlepicture in the root directory is my guess. The actual file is in a subdirectory set the the set folder structure. That's my guess.

I thought instead of taking out path names you were instead going to validate the input into folder names. Like not allowing 1,2,3,4,5,etc. and any other oddball characters.

Until now I have only encoded Jurassic Park III, Tomb Raider, Pearl Harbor. And now Shrek... and guess what? Yes, it stops encoding @ 23%. I have encoded half the movie to one cd, and now the other half freezes @ 23% (VBR, 4 pass). It stops @ frame 61087, in a total of 259212 (4*64803) which is not the beginning of credits...

I'll try to encode without credits chapter.

EDITED: Just a note: I did try without noise reduction filter, but didn't get better results; still crashs @ 23%. I think this is a CCE problem, not related with our particular machine, but as many have said the cause is still unknow (perhaps particular changes, particular sequences, etc.).
About black scenes: Jurassic Park III has many more black screens in credits part than Shrek, but didn't give me any problem....

ok gizmau where are ya when I need ya. I've searched the web and all to a dead end. I'm trying to find out where it shows the a set Luminance gain of 5 in dvd2avi tab = 133 (which dvd2svcd told me) how is the formula calculated. I want to throw it into the reference.

I've searched newgroups, etc. here's thread (http://forum.vcdhelp.com/viewtopic.php?t=81027) about luminance levels but all I could come up with is
PC = 0-255, TV = 16-235.

here's excerpt about luma correction from nicky's nandub
guide (http://nickyguides.digital-digest.com/nandub.htm)
"Scenes that contain a lot of contrast are difficult to compress. Mpeg compresses blurry or low contrast images better because there is less detail in them. If a scene that has a high contrast appears this option detects it and increases the bitrate to compensate. The threshold setting represents how high the lumina (or luminance i.e. brightness difference) needs to be before it will increase the bitrate for that scene. ......blah blah...cartoons generally have more contrast and sharpness problems."

never knew adjusting brightness and contrast could be so hard

edit: ok I found it...I'll throw this in the advanced reference...goodness gracious reminds me of the quadratic formula (plus or minus radical b squared minus four ac over two a):scared:

http://www.mir.com/DMG/ycbcr.html
so basically dvd2avi luminance input levels are Y'CbC and are converted to RGB. so 5 Y'CbC = 133 RBG...got it now?
I'll excerpt some relevant parts:

Crucial Little Facts
In standard computer graphics R'G'B' (8-bit per channel) encoding, each value ranges from 0 to 255. (0,0,0) is black and (255,255,255) is white.

In Y'CbCr (*always* 8-bit per channel) encoding:

Y' ranges from 16 to 235. 16 is the darkest, 235 is the brightest.
Cb and Cr range from 16 to 240. 128 is the zero-point.
Thus, (16, 128, 128) is pure black, and (235, 128, 128) is pure white.

You'll need to scale 8-bit R', G', and B' values by a factor of 1/255 to use these equations. Likewise, proper 8-bit Y' needs to be scaled by 219 and offset by 16. Proper 8-bit Cb and Cr need to be scaled by 224 and offset by 128.

r' = R' / 255 Y' = (y' * 219) + 16
g' = G' / 255 Cb = (cb * 224) + 128
b' = B' / 255 Cr = (cr * 224) + 128

so Y' value of 5 * 219 + 16 = 1111 / 255 = 4.3 (or dvd2svcd calcs 5 which is close enough for all freaking intensive purposes)

ok now can someone englighten me to what luminance offset is? Is that Cb and Cr values or what?

Yes, it's already supported but make sure you're using still 0.947 as the latest version does not work properly - seems they changed something with it and dvd2svcd has confirmed this already.

Also keep your pathes short as Link2 has a 38 characters path limit (I won't comment that).

That makes at least four people on this forum that have this exact same problem.

Anyone get this one figured out?

Well, looks like TMPGEnc worked for me too...

Hi all!

I'm having the same CCE freeze problem but with some DivX AVI files. I know divx files are more likely to have corrupted data and generate a CRC error in CCE. I've patched CCE for this and the CRC error message no longer appears. Maybe where CCE stops is when the message was supposed to be displayed. In the other hand, CCE shouldnt stop encoding because of the patch. I have a case where it stops encoding at 33%. I've tried 3 times now.
I guess this is an AviSynth problem and i'll try to see if there's a new release and try it out.
BTW, this problem never ocurred with DVD's.

I'm having the problem with "Scary Movie 2", CCE stops after the 1st or 2nd pass. I've tried:

- turning off "anti-noise filter"
- replacing the Avisynth.avs

Nothing worked :( Before I rip the movie again without the credits, I'd like to try out the method dvd2svcd wrote about. My problem is that I can't access Donald Grafts homepage to download the tweak.dll. Can somebody send it to me please? My adress is alexander.nenstedt@gmx.de.

Well, i'm still with problems trying to encode some DivX files into SVCD. Apart from the freezes that sometimes happens, now i'm getting MPEG files encoded only with the following message:

AviSynth: caught an access violation at 0x0bef0098, attempting to read from 0x130e5000

I'm using AviSynth 1.0 beta 6.
One thing that is leaving me puzzled is why this doesnt happen when I test the AVS script in VirtualDub?
And why can I encode DV avi's perfectly with no problems?
Is this a multitask problem in XP? Something trying to access the file at the same time?
This is even more puzzling because the same machine converted 3 other divx files with no problems.
All of the files were passed through DivFix to correct possible errors.
I know there is a lot of fuss related with this strange errors that occur in CCE. But i guess all the freezes and crashes are AviSynth related or, then again, perhaps not. Oh, also tried beta 7 with no results.
I'm trying a more radical aproach now. I'm converting the problematic AVI to Huffyuv and see if i can encode it. This is very strange since I dont have problems of this kind with DVD's.

I'll continue to report my findings

Just finished the PAL version of Lola Rennt (Run Lola Run), a strange but great German Cult movie. After constant freezing of CCE at 27% I tried to switch of the Anti Noise filter but this didn't change anything. Then I switched the Image Quality priority from 22 back to 17 resulting in a freeze at 55%. Finally I installed version 2.62 of CCE, turned back on the Anti Noise filter and restored Image Quality priority to 22 : no more freezes !

Sucessfully converted the DivX movie which was gaving me freezing problems (that avisynth violation error).
I had to convert the original DivX file to Huffyuv resulting in a 22 gb AVI file :( and the encoding speed droped from .6 to .4. I'll see if i can improve it by eliminating the ConvertToYUY() command in the AVS script since the resulting AVI is already in YUV and i guess supported in MPEG.
This seems to be the most effective method in dealing with CCE freezes with DivX files although it consumes a lot of HD resources.

During the last couple of weeks, I have not been able to convert a single movie without experiencing CCE hangs at reproduceable parts of the movie.

I have tried every single workaround that has been discussed throughout the forum in the different CCE threads - none helped to solve the problem.
Yesterday, I did a WindowsXP reinstall (from scratch). Since then, I am able to even run CCE without having to use the VFAPI method

Did anyone of you, who was suffering from the CCE hang issue, try a Windows reinstall yet?
