Balthazar2k4,
I'll check it.

Oreons, it appears that if I convert the 7.1 PCM to FLAC first, MKVtoMP4 correctly converts the 7.1 to 2.0 AAC. If I use MKVtoMP4 directly to convert the PCM to AAC, I get 7.1 AAC no matter what I try.

Three questions:

1) How can i add an external SRT file?

2) Using FFmpeg and My MP4Box Gui (which uses mp4box) for muxing mp4 videos, i get from MediaInfo that Format Profile = Base Media and Codec ID = isom. When i use mkvtomp4, there is no "Format Profile" entry, and Codec ID is now m4v. All my conversions are from mkv (h264) to mp4 with no reencoding. Is this a big deal, and is there something i can change in mkvtomp4 to get the same result as ffmpeg and mp4box?

2) After converting an mkv file that has an SRT sub, everything seems to be ok, and all works well with VLC media player on PC. But when i open the newly muxed mp4 file in MPC-HC, i get no subtitles (subtitles and navigate entries are disabled). I tried both Gabest and Haali splitters. When i mux using mp4box, subtitles work fine with both MPC-HC and VLC. How can i fix this?

Thanks.

Balthazar2k4,
This is because that PCM served directly into QAAC, I'll see how to fix it.

Makaveli84,
1. Drag file into the window streams.
2. Rename m4v to mp4 ext after repack.
3. The program makes the subtitles compatible with Apple devices, and they are read correctly only on a few soft-players.

.

My best guess is to add an intermediate PCM -> FLAC conversion step. Worked for me anyways :D

Oreons,

Love your package....what I really love and just noticed is when I convert my TV Show mkv's to m4v and use the search & tag feature. When I drag the completed m4v into iTunes, it knows to put it as a TV Show and not a movie..plus has all the episode descriptions.

Question. I have some MP4's of movies and TV Shows. Could you add an option to allow me to just use the search and tag feature of your GUI to demux them, write tag info and remux them back into a mp4/m4v?

Of not, maybe point me in the direction to do it manually

TIA :D

Mr. Monte,
Do not quite understand the question. For the MP4 files you can do search and tag editing, then when you press the start information is written to a file without repacking.
Or you need repacking MP4 to change tracks?

Mr. Monte

Oreons,

Did not know it would tag and repack MP4 without any A/V processing...I will have to try.

Yes, on the last. I have a few MP4's that have audio tracks in them that must not be Apple compliant AAC. I would like to select an MP4, check a box to re-encode audio and have the GUI demux the video and audio, re-encode the audio with the available encoder of choice and remux the A/V back into a MP4.

Thanks,

2. Rename m4v to mp4 ext after repack.
3. The program makes the subtitles compatible with Apple devices, and they are read correctly only on a few soft-players.

1. Thx, i should've tried that :D
2. That doesn't affect the Format Profile (or lack thereof) nor the Codec ID values. I'm not sure what do those mean, but i've never had mp4 files that weren't "Base Media" and "isom".
3. Is there anyway to have the subs working correctly in both platforms, or at least, a way to choose my settings preference so i can make them work in soft players?

Thanks again.

EDIT: I tried the MP4Box conversion in CLI, and it seems that the "Format Profile" and "Codec ID" values are automatically set depending on the m4v or mp4 extension at muxing time. Changing the extension post muxing doesn't do anything. So is there a way in MkvToMp4 to set the desired extension before muxing (i.e. before hitting the "Start" button)?

Indeed dutch subtitlling it works perfectly with the new version. What about a movie with the resolution: 1920*818? It is marked in red. How can i convert this?

Thx in advance.

Mr. Monte,
If you want to edit the MP4 tracks, right-click mouse in the tracks window, and enable "Edit mode".

Makaveli84,
After renaming the extension m4v to mp4 files will not play on your devices? MkvToMp4 not make mp4 extension, only to m4v. This is made for compatibility with Apple devices. Maybe in future versions of this configuration in the settings will appear.
Subtitles are made compatible with Apple devices (MP4 atom correction) and a software players (except VLC) do not recognize it.

TomTarolo,
Red color means incompatibility with iPad1 and ATV1.

Well, this is not a big deal, but since the program's name is MkvToMp4, the user should have at least the option to output the file to mp4 extension. As i said, this is not a simple extension issue, because mp4box sets the Format Profile and Codec ID fields based on the extension (mp4 or m4v).

Dear oreons and other members,

Maybe a stupid question but is there any possiblity of upscaling the video in ATV3 or your convertor? In media player like XBMC this is possible. Just searching for a way to fill my screen :-)

Thx in advance.

Sorry Oreons, I have been swamped, but I finally got around to trying the latest beta with PCM tracks and it works without issue. I have only tried a couple movies so I can't say conclusively that everything is perfect, but looking good so far. Thanks for the great work!

Oreons,

Maybe I'm not finding it...but can you allow a right click in log area and have a clear log option. Also, maybe have the log skip a few lines in between encoding jobs ...would make it easier to read info for each job.

Also, a drop down option to have the program save the file as a m4v or MP4. I know I can rename the extensions when completed, but it would be a nice option..not need option. This is only cause some of my players....phones, android devices do not recognize m4v.

Thanks

Anyone know if there's a way to assign multiple genres to a movie or TV show for use with Apple TV? iTunes doesn't seem to allow it. MkvToMp4 pulls down multiple genres from TheMovieDB and separates them with ampersands. Do most folks just manually change the genre tag to a single genre in iTunes?

@oreons: may I ask where are your MP4Box binaries coming from? I'm evaluating various latest windows binaries - even official GPAC nightly snapshots but since few months
my muxes (elementary video.264 + NeroAacEncoded audio.m4a) come out with very slight sync/delay issues that drive me crazy. I'm yet to find the reason behind this...
I'm sure that my older muxes that were created with MP4Box dated back to sometime near end of 2011 were not suffering from such barely noticeable A/V delay issues.

For one file, the m4v audio and video are not in sync (but audio and subtitles are in sync).

I compared it with another file that is in sync and found only this line to be added in the log (v0.221):
Stream uses forward prediction - stream CTS offset: 64 frames
2s seems about right for the delay. Any way I can set a delay for the video stream (since audio and subtitle are in sync)?

First of all, thank you oreons for this nice application...:thanks:

From the 0.221 changelog:
6. Ability to use QT library for encoding without having to install QuickTime player or iTunes.

Somehow this does not work for me. I always get the following error:
initializing QTML...done
qaac 0.86, QuickTime 7.1.6
Mezzoforte_internal_audio_2.wav
Error: -206: setProperty: scda/osbd
Qaac terminated with error: 2

I really do not want the full QuickTime player or iTunes on my machine, but I do have QT-Alternative 1.81 installed (I need exactly this version for MPEGStreamClip).

Could the error I am getting have something to to with this? And do you see any way how I could get qaac to work without getting rid of QT-Alternative?

Anyways, it is no big deal after all, I can live with Nero AAC quite well...

Thanks again,
cheers

MkvToMp4 from version 0.221 using the portable version CoreAudioToolbox, it is not dependent from the software that is installed in the system. Qaac v. 1.xx use CoreAudioToolbox to encode.

Thanks for your response!

But that still leaves the subtitle out of sync since audio and subtitle were in sync in the first place (or out of sync with the video by the same amount). Guess I have to look for a 3rd-party tool for that.

hi oreons,

first of all, thanks for building this tool, as i always thought of doing something like that, since i once kind of figured out all the tweaks that are needed to get a mp4 file working correctly on iDevices (grouping, enabling, disabling, hndlr etc.).

now, since i used it for some days and batch converting, i found several bugs, which i wanna provide to improve your great effort.

program crashes when: start muxing an source mp4. this is maybe because there is no option to set an output name and the file names will be the same. or are other files than mkv as input not working? then you could tweak your file browser to only show mkvs. output file naming should be added nonetheless.

subtitles aren't added corrently (they don't work for me), as your atom correction isn't taking place (this obviously should be hdlr=sbtl). if i name the file m4v a subtitle will show up in quicktime but i think that's not the proper way. if this is set correctly quicktime will recognize the subtitle(s) in a mp4 aswell, right?

when batch converting mkvs i recognized they all had the same subtitle. strangly, after finishing the job for a file, all temp files get deleted but the temp subtitle track (sub_external_sub_0.SRT). this one (first of the queue list) is then used for all other files.

as i see the command line options used to mux in the log, i would prefer u set the first (or user specifed) track of a group of equal track types (audio tracks) as enabled, as you already set the others as disabled. does mp4 support smth. like forced subtitles? i guess it was setting the enabled flag to do that. maybe you should give the user the option to highlight maybe a forced subtitle track (and then set it via enabled flag)...

when working with (negative) delays the program seems to still have his issues: with eac3to i get quite good results just by setting -###ms. no need to wav the ac3 aswell.
"soft" delay (no cropped audio but a delay flag set) didn't work for me when i played around with mp4box. has anyone got negative audio delays working with mp4box? or is it because it cannot be set after muxing but within the muxing process (then mkvtomp4 should implement that way of delaying)?

and yes, if put to program files directory you will need to start the program as administrator as it will write the extracted (and de- and encoded) streams into the temp folder that is within the mkvtomp4 folder which leads me to: custom temp folder within setup options is needed. this way the temp folder can be located outside a protected directory and no admin rights would be needed to work properly. maybe also an installer and updater would be great ;-)

last but not least: do you need someone to translate the interface into german? :D

oreons
21st August 2012, 14:53
sPaCeMoNk3y,
program crashes when: start muxing an source mp4. this is maybe because there is no option to set an output name and the file names will be the same. or are other files than mkv as input not working? then you could tweak your file browser to only show mkvs. output file naming should be added.

Program understands many input containers (mkv, mp4, ts, avi, wmv)
Output file name = input + extension m4v or mp4.
If the input file mp4, you can repackage it (then add the prefix _new) or simply correct the atoms (fast option by default). Switches the button Edit mode. Output directory is specified in the settings.

subtitles aren't added corrently (they don't work for me), as your atom correction isn't taking place (this obviously should be hdlr=sbtl). if i name the file m4v a subtitle will show up in quicktime but i think that's not the proper way. if this is set correctly quicktime will recognize the subtitle(s) in a mp4 aswell, right?
Atoms corrected for Apple devices and QuickTime player or iTunes. They are displayed correctly and switches, оn other devices and programs is not guaranteed. File extension should be necessarily m4v (not mp4).

when batch converting mkvs i recognized they all had the same subtitle. strangly, after finishing the job for a file, all temp files get deleted but the temp subtitle track (sub_external_sub_0.SRT). this one (first of the queue list) is then used for all other files.
Do not delete files after processing? As for the use of all others, I do not understand.

as i see the command line options used to mux in the log, i would prefer u set the first (or user specifed) track of a group of equal track types (audio tracks) as enabled, as you already set the others as disabled. does mp4 support smth. like forced subtitles? i guess it was setting the enabled flag to do that. maybe you should give the user the option to highlight maybe a forced subtitle track (and then set it via enabled flag)...
As for forced I have no information, subtitles in the program all switchable.

when working with (negative) delays the program seems to still have his issues: with eac3to i get quite good results just by setting -###ms. no need to wav the ac3 aswell.
"soft" delay (no cropped audio but a delay flag set) didn't work for me when i played around with mp4box. has anyone got negative audio delays working with mp4box? or is it because it cannot be set after muxing but withing the muxing process (then mkvtomp4 should implement that way of delaying)?

For AC3 use DelayCut, for DTS - Eac3To.
Mp4Box does not support delays flag...

and yes, if put to program files directory you will need to start the program as administrator as it will write the extracted (and de- and encoded) streams into the temp folder that is within the mkvtomp4 folder which leads me to: custom temp folder within setup options is needed. this way the temp folder can be located outside a protected directory and no admin rights would be needed to work properly. maybe also an installer and updater would be great ;-)

I think about to set the temp directory in the settings on one of the future versions. Installer is not planned.
last but not least: do you need someone to translate the interface to german?
One guy from the forum.videohelp.com promised to translate into German :)

great, the problem i had resulted from using v0.221. since v0.221a the subtitle problem got solved mostly. the crashes have also disappeared. seems like enabled flag won't do it's job on subtitles, so no forced subtitles possible. as for delays: at the help of mp4box a delay property is mentioned but does work and if it does, does it work with aac and ac3 and also negative values? (not only a question to oreons).

the problem i have left doesn't seem to come from your tool directly: as many video files use a different par (video gets squeezed) there is a problem with the TextStreamHeader positioning. mp4box seems to ignore the par attribute from a video track for the subtitle conversation and implementation from .srt files. this means: if i have a dvd video source which i recoded to AVC without resizing i need to set a specific par in mp4box, so that the video will be squeezed to the right size. when adding a subtitle track with mp4box it will only look for the video track's resolution not for the par and then the subtitles aren't correctly centered anymore. they will be on the bottom left corner.
as i mentioned mp4box does this automatically so it'd be quite hard to to write a fix for this. maybe it could be done by first translating the srt to ttxt via mp4box. then automatically change the TextStreamHeader position of the resulting ttxt as calculated with SAR x PAR. then mux everything together.

oreons
22nd August 2012, 09:05
sPaCeMoNk3y,
Mp4Box ignores the delay parameter for the tracks.
As for the subtitle options TextStreamHeader, the MkvToMp4 corrects this block, but does not calculate SAR & PAR.

But there is still a problem when I try adding external srt subtitles to multiple files in a queue: all the other files get the same subtitle as the first queue item instead of their assigned.

sPaCeMoNk3y,
Please provide details on how the problem occurs. Preferably every step with pictures.

As source files for each m4v I got:
1 mkv (with only AVC stream)
2 ac3 2.0 audio files (which will be converted to AAC without AC3 pass thru)
1 srt

Procedure:
- open / load the mkv
- drag & drop both ac3 and the srt
- setup the audio files to be AAC without AC3 pass thru, one GERMAN, one ENGLISH, srt set to GERMAN

repeat for 12 other files. when finished, click start to start the process. then every file in list will get the srt from the first file.

for your information: all files have the same name, but different folder names: It's a DVD rip I'm doing for private use.
So every mkv is named "VTS_01_1.mkv". The audio files are also always named "VTS_01_1 T80 2_0ch 192Kbps DELAY 0ms.ac3" and "VTS_01_1 T81 2_0ch 192Kbps DELAY 0ms.ac3" and the subtitle is always named "sub.srt". It's always the same folder structure but different folder name "1" to "13".

--> this does even occur, when i just try to convert one file. it seems like the temporary srt file (sub_external_sub_0.SRT in my case) doesn't get deleted after the job is finished for one file. if i delete it on my own from the temp folder it will work. So maybe the problem is, the temporary srt doesn't get deleted and if external srt files are named the same, the program loads the one, which is already in the temp folder, of the same name.

Being one of the ungrateful beneficiaries of your work, I have been using it extensively to convert HD-Movie files for streaming to an ipad.
Remuxing instead of (live-) transcoding probably saved my Laptop from a meltdown, different story though for my hard disk ;-)

I have been ending up using an App called Airvideo - free trial version: http://itunes.apple.com/hk/app/air-video-free-watch-your/id313056918?mt=8
for most of my Movie watching.
This app uses the native player for playback, achieves in my case a very stable & reliable streaming of Mp4 files and there is a live transcoding option for the rest.

Finally -I assume using a modified version of ffmpegs 'avconv' that Dev. managed to get a 'live remux' version to work.
Still in Beta but works beautifully for most of my mkv files I tried it on.

Only thing missing is Subtitle support - subs are not really his thing I suppose or he has given up on it...

With your shown experience in subtitles for Ipad, any chance you could give a few hints how to add subtitles into a live remux ?
Regardless - a big :thanks: for your work
