About editing the first item in the queue while the encode is running: That first item represents the currently executing encode. That's why you can't change the settings. To change it, stop the encode, edit it, re-queue and resume.

ok managed to run the 5.7 with a modified core of 1.2.2
5.8 however if i drag and drop a file on it crashes . i assume 5.8 runs a different core version? and if so wich is it?

steps to reproduce
find said movie (lets say unknown trueHD track + 2 known tracks)
add to vidcoder
program correctly recognizes 3 audio tracks
add to queue
add an other movie (so the current active movie is changed)
add to queue
restore first movie
boom 2/3 audio tracks (but program correctly encodes all 3)

Hmm. Not sure what you mean by "Unknown" tracks. VidCoder doesn't have special handling for them, so they should work just like any other audio track, just named "Unknown". What was your picker set to do with audio tracks when you saw this happen?

have 2 pickers
1 is set to get all audio no subs and then i remove the audio selections through preset (samples)
2 is set to get all audio and some subs (movies)

so in all cases i get all the audio tracks
in some cases however i see no audio or 2/3 or 1/2
the audio that doesnt come is ussually unknown language (program cant identify it even tho its still english - probably due to TRUE HD maybe?)

the fact that the program cant identify it and appears as 2/3 doesnt mean that its not encoding it
the result is still with 3 audio tracks

so basically this is just a visual bug and has no impact in the encodings

one more bug that i see for some months now

when u restore from completed the item gets a name of the type blabla - restored from compelted.mkv
there is also a new restored from completed preset
now thats fine
since i restore a ton of items every day (samples - certain movies that need reencoding) some times i see alot of restored from completed presets

the issue is that after some weeks those presets persist even when u close the program
so basically every couple of months i have to manually delete them all (4-5)

dunno if this is cauze in cases of sudden close of the program so they get saved automatically or if they saved if the program switches to an other "restored from completed" preset or something

also i dont mind deleting 3-4 presets every couple of months
just pointing it in case u want to do some clean up on the preset saving code

Hi,

I discovered an issue today using 5.8 Beta.
I am converting from a DVD to a custom preset with audio to AAC and AC3 passthrough.
The DVD contains contains 3 audio tracks. I pick another audio track and VidCoder shows 4 audio tracks for output as expected. But the final file has only 1 language (AAC + AC3).

Will test again with 3.16 tomorrow and 5.8 Beta using a picker rather than choosing manually.
But maybe someone can confirm the same.

also i found an other bug

since i switched to 5.7 from 5.1 last week i am experiencing a ton of fails
on average about 1 movie fails every day so thats like 1 in 10 movies.it seems random and mostly those movies encode fine if i restore them. will do some more tests and try some earlier versions but i am afraid that either the front end or the new handbrake core might have memory leaks somewhere. will do more tests and get back

is it possible to add in completed tab the time and qrf?


it would be amazing if it was possible to add a thumbnail of a screenshot of current frame encoded or just take a screenshot every 10sec 30sec intervals so it can help identify whether this is a scene with lots of action or not


for instance some secs are dark scenes and u see the encoder jump at 40fps some times there is alot of movement or water so encoder goes down to 5fps

The "thumbnail as you encode" would need to be exposed by the HandBrake core. I don't have any visibility into that.

The crash bug is something I've seen others report and I'll update the HandBrake core in the next release and see if they've fixed it.

Will make a note about QRF in the completed tab... sounds like I would have to add the column picker for that one too.

for instance now i am at 2.37gb at 81.6%
the estimate will be ~2900 and usually goes +-10% of that

its nice to have the ability to encode multiple items at the same time but when u encode movies for 2 hours having 4 of them at the same time doesnt help with anything

it would be nice however to have the ability to temporary start encoding the 2nd item in queue basically engage in a multiproccess mode just for 1 item

that could be helpfull in a scenario where i dunno a movie is encoding already at 50% and u dont wanna cansel it but u wanna test something or encode something smaller in the meantime

the problem i imagine to implement such thing would be how to trigger the 2nd item while the 1st item is running since multiple items are triggered only when the 1st item finishes

Great program! I also noticed some failed jobs, and just maybe it had to do with unknown bit rates with Audio and unknown source pertaining to language.

Now for a suggestion. Would you be able to make it so that you can click on a job in the queue, whether the queue started or not, and have the encoding options window show you what settings have been made instead of having to hit edit and VidCoder ask if you want to keep the current preset? Sometimes we just want to make sure we set up the correct output. You can do it for any queue, whether encoding or not, and just change what could be done. So for example we click a job in any queue and see it's settings. If ok we just close the window. If wrong we either update it right there if it hasn't started, or stop it and update it. I really don't know which preset VidCoder is asking to save when I hit edit ona job. Is it that particular setting, or is it the whole preset picked from General list?

Also the Foreign Audio search just kills about every job if another subtitle is picked and checked off as burnt in. So lets say I have a video with foreign subs forced already, if I add another subtitle and choose burnt in, the job will fail out somehow. Best bet is just pick whatever subtitle you want and how you want it and just leave forein search alone. The forced foreign track will automatically copy over. This is especially true with closed captioning. Just leave foreign audio alone and check off whatever with your CC.

If you edit an existing job it will load it up with a "restored from queue" special preset. It's asking you if you want to save the preset you were on before switching to that one.

Did you understand the suggested feature I inquired? It would save time from having to open an edit window etc... just to ensure one put the correct settings in place.

There's a glitch or not when inputting Bluray files with embedded subtitles. It won't acknowledge the subtitle and say there's none where there is one. It's an mp4 Bluray rip with embedded sub I'm going to convert to mkv hevc .265. The file plays fine in any player with the sub coming up. I enclosed the Mediainfo file so you can check it out. Thanks.

Also for w/e reason VidCoder will not always integrate the multi-thread use of Nvenc Cuda in my case. Sometimes a close and open again does the trick.

Yeah I understand the feature you're asking about. It's not straightforward how to make that change. Currently it's possible to have unsaved manual work in the encoding settings and it wouldn't make sense to wipe it all away when selecting a queue item. Currently the way to review settings on queued items is adding a custom column to the queue. If there's an important setting you'd like to keep track of I could look into making another column option.

As for recognizing built-in subtitle tracks, that's the HandBrake core that does that. You could see if HandBrake is having the same trouble to see if it's an issue with their engine.

VidCoder crawling to about 8-10 fps. Don't know if it's an audio encoding issue or something in my bios with my drives. Using my external drive I was getting upwards to 45-53 fps. I checked the start encoding when restart button so as not to lose my place. Going to check my bios setiings.

Well just for a heads up VidCoder is just like that regarding certain files. I'm now getting upwards to about 80fps on all 3 seasons of Spartacus.

The subtitle issue actually wasn't an issue as I thought it wouldn't copy it over even if it wasn't detected. It does, and so I think maybe it was another app. I'll recheck.

Have you thought about implementing your own support for GPU NVenc etc...? Would that be too much floabw to tinker with?

One thing guaranteed is the results from VidCoder are great!

You definitely did many of us a favor with VidCoder as fussing with Handbrake literally reminds me of an Apple product.

That feauture request would really come in handy.;) Just something like a quick preview of the job's settings, and then either change the settings or just close the window.

The Auto Bitrate function actually serves as a Variable Bitrate? Because I see that many of the online files have weird bitrates with AAC ranging from 53 bitrates to 160 bitrates with a stereo downmix. Must be Handbrakes default because even though one uses VidCoder I think Mediainfo reports it as Handbrake, and I doubt most users will not leave it at auto. Reason being I definitely doubt there's some advanced way of knowing that lets say some file will be better off at say 53, 78, 93, etc... bitrates for that setting.

VidCoder I think has 160 bitrate as default for stereo AAC downmix which is very good. What I did was switch that same setting to AC3 stereo downmix @160 bitrate, and also tried AC3 with Dolby Pro Logic II at 160 bitrates with MKV HEVC Fast 1080p30 preset. Sounds very good.

Sometimes the difference between the same bitrate 160 AAC and AC3 stereo is very noticeable. Now I wouldn't know if it's in the decoding software/hardware that makes the difference or not, though since I'm using my PC and my TCL HDTV as monitor, that's all I can go by.

Going to do my whole collection to HEVC MKV 1080p30 and use 5.1, 6.1, whenever possible at 640 bitrate. Stereo will be either Dolby Pro Logic II or Stereo @160 bitrate. Those lower bitrates I posted were tremendously good, so Auto does work very well!:thanks:

The "Auto" bitrate just means it will select a fixed bitrate based on the channel count. The "Quality" target will give you a truly variable bitrate (and probably the best results overall if you pick the right quality target).

I must say that VidCoder has been very stable as of late. No errors, no stopped jobs, no closings. I could just imagine all the work it takes, what with so many GPU Cards, PC Rigs, etc... This here has to be the most challenging out of video work. The decrypting etc... seems to have been figured out already. Just a handy tip, if anyone runs into that Cinavia Encryption just rip the file to something other than the original format. For some reason it bypasses it. Guess they figured on just the converting to same format. Also some Bluray drives have been allowing for straight copying to the HDD without any additional software. That's hit or miss and very difficult to narrow down to.

Why are some 1080p files in 4x3 aspect ratio when they say 16x9? 1080p is automatically anamorphic no? Also I doubt these files that say bluray are that. No way anyone is going to take a 25gb-50gb bluray and make a under 3gb file and even 400mbs. No way without taking a serious hit on quality.

The picker didn't apply the settings I picked, unless I'm wrong. I picked for it to use the last subtitle if found, which I think means the last kind of subtitle because it can't be the same one from another video because that won't make sense. I then picked to use the first subtitle and it didn't take. Then in Queue I hit the files in question and set to apply current settings and it didn't. Also when editing after in queue I saved current settings as you pointed out, and when I clicked to queue it said there's a job already set to output would you like to overwrite etc... I said yes but it didn't, it just posted 2 jobs of the same. I don't trust any settings yet and that's why many think they have settings in place and don't, and don't check afterwards. I had to manually apply all the settings again one by one. Why am I getting double the file size for same audio settings except instead of 348 bitrate going to 640 bitrate? Really it takes it to double the file size. Say 1.76GB to 3.6GB? I'll be honest I don't understand many of the settings, and there really isn't any straight forward guides. There's only an old guide back at Digital Digest my old stomping grounds, but that's like over 12 years old. Someone should post a step by step guide for all the current settings. Just like MKVToolnix, really everyone knows command lining executions for software? Very Steve Jobbish imo. Are they intentionally making The Walking Dead in that DAR? Because I see many asking for 1080p over 720p? I don't get that at all. 1080p in non-anamorphic?

I got it now. Have to pick options, then save picker, then pick folder or files. We still need a nice Guide with most settings. I would volunteer, though I don't know enough. That Nvenc is a saviour in its own right! beats 10-50fps. Couldn't edit btw for some reason.

Now for some reason I'm getting close to 300fps with same type of source files to same MKV HEVC x265 Nvenc. I noticed that when a DVD has previews it will error out if you don't set length at 0 first. Leaving it at default of 40-50 with previews will err out or rather just copy one preview to be more exact.

Does VidCoder change settings if for some reason without telling you? I had Nvenc H.265 and getting 300+fps then I loaded some other same files, same container, to same setting and it went down to 45-50fps? I wonder if it doesn't recognize that another app used the GPU previously and has stopped? I'm using MPC-HC with HW instead of CPU encoding/decoding. I'm going to switch back and see if that's the case. If it is then that's a bug. It should use the Nvenc always unless it chooses not to for any reason? Let me know. Thanks.

Yup everything went back to regular mkv for some reason. That's not good . I just wasted time setting everything up, as some files are 5.1 and some not so I can't apply the same settings to all of them correct? I mean if I have a 2 channel AAC file, I can't ask VidCoder to change it to 640 bitrate AC# if it only came with 2 channels and sometimes 93 bitrate or w/e correct?

@gonca: No, but you can collapse the folders you don't care about. Or you can save the ones you do care about as custom presets and collapse the entire "Built-in" folder. It will remember the folder state on subsequent launches.

I'm leary about batch encoding as VidCoder does change settings at times. Why is the default to Downscale always when you're encoding to 1080p 30? That's not making any sense at all. I just went over some files and they were still in their 720p original size? Anamorphic is also a default which I want, though some files will never get that way even with upscale/downscale on. Another thing I noticed is that the audio encoding settings will have in bold what's available, though if you pick something else it will bring it up. So, which is it using? For instance if I have an AC3 track at stereo at say 192bitrate, I will have the stereo and even maybe mono setting bold, though if I choose Dolby Stereo, or Dolby Pro Logic II, it will bring it up, and if I choose 640 bitrate as well. So will it put those in place anyway? The Nvenc is hit or miss. Sometimes I'll get 1100fps, 500fps, 360fps, never a steady rate. All files are the same mostly so I don't know what that's about. I'm going to have to go over each job, and see what happened and then run them again. Big difference when you have Dolby Stereo 640kbs or Dolby Pro Logic II as opposed to AC3 160kbs. What happened is that when I went from HEVC MKV to MKV 1080p 30 it didn't take HEVC. So it was an error I didn't foresee. This is why there should be a standard and that's it. I mean why come out with something new and prolly better to still have less hanging around.

You can set the settings to whatever you want, but it will "sanitize" them when encoding and pick something within the actual possible range. This doesn't alter the actual preferences stored in the preset though.

The default is downscale because in most cases upscaling does not result in an increase in picture quality when watching. Video players can upscale in good quality as they are playing and upscaling at encode time usually means you spend more data storing it and you get a worse quality picture if you don't happen to watch it at exactly the resolution you encoded to.

As for some jobs not respecting your upscale/downscale setting, can you share what your preferences are, and the dimensions of the source video? Does it always produce a 720p output when you run it?

Ok let me explain more better if possible. I keep getting 720p encodes that were automatically set to anamorphic by VidCoder even if I changed the downscaling to scale up or down to target. I just tried to read the whole anamorphic post on Handbrake's Documentation and I must say that even the most learned of us would have a time of it. What I eventually got out of it is that supposedly Handbrake/VidCoder will produce an anamorphic video with preset flags that will tell the player how to play the file. Well maybe that's correct, though unless my output is in that stretched 16x9 mode it will not play that way on my PC with w/e be it VLC, MPC-HC etc... So is there a true way to convert 4x3 to 16x9 anamorphic so that I can enjoy it as that? Or there's really no way of changing a source's DAR? Most of my sources are MP4 downloads and mostly 1080p. I'm tricked into believing 1080p is automatically 16x9. It's not and that don't make sense. So according to you and VidCoder/Handbrake it's better off leaving anamorphic checked and Downscale always? If so why bother with 1080p 30 and higher settings? Why would I even encode the original file if I'm not going to change it? I see the 10 bit MKV HEVC difference right away! Even the audio at same settings sounds better at 10 bit. Very rare I'll get a clear sound from MP4 AAC no matter how many channels. Now AC3 and MKV especially at the 10 bit sounds incredible.

I don't tinker with much. My settings were at first 1080p 30 MKV with AC3 at 160 bitrate for Dolby Pro Logic II. Then I decided to go with AC3 Stereo @ Auto which gives you 224 bitrate. At 5.1 AC3 Auto it'll go to 640 bitrate. Sometimes I'll check pass through on 5.1 if it's 448 bitrate original. That's it. Then I just changed it to MKV Nvenc at 1080p 30. Same settings. When I noticed that some 720p files were still 720 with either of these two settings, I searched and saw the downscaling. I said why is it doing that if I want 1080p? Good question really. I then just changed that to upscale/downscale to target, but even if it supplied the 1080p the DAR still was 4x3 on some? Can you help me tweak w/e so that I can get 16x9 0n all my encodes especially since they're 1080p? If anyone is encoding to real HD and up and still watching 4x3 something's not right imo. I got lucky when I checked my previous work as most were 16x9. Now the 10 bit MKV are not really 16x9. I think if and only if there's a way to always have 16x9 on any high-def encodes it should be implemented automatically. If not then the industry can kill themselves with 4320p all they want and 4x3.
