hi

2 moar bugs not really important ones

1) lets assume u made a movie and its bad it ended up too big
u go to completed tab right click restore and change qrf20 to 21 and denoise from light to medium or something

now if u do the same thing with a movie that is processing . lets say current queue encodes a movie and its at 10% and its already like 500mb so it will end up +-5gb. u stop the encode and right click on the movie to change the values

for some reason the program sets the values to the preset selected AND NOT THE ACTUAL VALUES U SELECTED when u pressed encode
so for instance if u selected preset X and changed the values abit like made the default qrf25 into 22 and no denoise into medium restoring the movie FROM THE QUEUE (not from completed) will restore it wiyth qrf25 and no denoise isntead of what u selected

2) this must be relevant to the previous bug and i suspect it might be relevant to how picker system is handled but a similar bug exists with time selection
remember when i told u about a bug where if u pick a picker with a specific time selection the autoname feature is disabled and the name is stuck ?
then u fixed it and now the autorename function works even with a picker that has a specific time selection. (obviusly the autorename function works always for complete movie pickers)

what i found out , out of the blue, is that if u manually change the time selection (that the picker selects lets say from 1 00 00 to 1 06 40) to lets say 0 30 00 to 0 35 00 (basically anything that is not handled by a picker ) and then proceed to start encode . then the completed encode if u right click and edit the autorename function is disabled again

basically i found out about this bug due to the fact that some movies coisidently the sample at 1 00 00 mark was bad so i had to use an other scene

obviously this is not a major bug and i dont even care abotu fixing it just wanted to point it out . i assume that the whole code with time selections , picker , and autorename fucntion from completed tab is too messy and very easy to create such bugs

anyway
as usual thanks for ur wonderfull program already encoded 500+ movies and keep going
any hope to add custom log folder?

Having trouble reproducing those bugs. It brings the correct values back when editing for me. Maybe you could break them out into explicit steps?

1) Step 1
2) Step 2
... etc

As for custom log folder. I have that change with a bunch of other log changes waiting for the next Beta release (after I get Stable out the door).

Released VidCoder 4.28 (https://github.com/RandomEngy/VidCoder/releases/tag/v4.28):

This release includes everything from the v4 Betas:

Consolidated main window controls and menus into a Ribbon menu. Makes the interface cleaner and easier to use.
Overhauled source view into an "accordion" style:
Each section is expandable to show more detail, with sections auto-expanding as space allows.
Video expands to show a screenshot and source details.
Audio and subtitles expand to show all source tracks, without the need to dig into menus or open additional dialogs.
Section headers give a clear summary of which tracks are selected to appear in the output.
Updated HandBrake Core to 1.2.0 Stable. Among the changes this brings:
Added support for AMD VCE and Nvidia NVENC hardware-accelerated encoders.
Switched decoding library from Libav to FFmpeg, which fixes many previously unreadable sources.
Updated presets to use Stereo rather to avoid issues with DPL2 mixdown.
Added support for E-AC3 in MP4 container.
Added Speex audio decoder.
Added TIFF/LZMA video decoder.
Picker enhancements:
Added option to change capitalization format for titles from "Every Word" to "First word"
Added ability to select a time range.
Added ability to choose audio and subtitle tracks by index.
Added Dark theme. This is applied automatically based on the Windows 10 setting, or can be set manually.
Made VidCoder much easier to access with screen readers and keyboard.
Made VidCoder work correctly in High Contrast mode.
Added ability to execute multiple simultaneous encodes. Go to Global Options -> Process -> Maximum simultaneous encode jobs. This can be useful on a machine with many CPU cores.
Added "Encode complete" Windows notifications for the Store version.
Added option to stop encoding, close VidCoder, sleep, hibernate or shut down after currently encoding jobs complete.
Added options to apply current encoding settings to some or all queue items.
Added a right click option to completed items to retry failed items.
Changed to use .part suffix while encoding the video. When done, it deletes failed partial files and renames completed files to the final name. This should reduce the amount of junk left behind from failed encodes.
Fixed many bugs

Released VidCoder 5.0 Beta (https://github.com/RandomEngy/VidCoder/releases/tag/v5.0-beta):

Started v5 Betas.

Overhauled log system
Each scan and encode has its own separate log, and general app messages are put into the General log.
Logs for past scan and encode events are visible on the Log window.
Added button to upload the log to Pastebin and copy a link to it.
Added option to copy logs to a custom directory.
Removed in-memory log copy which should reduce VidCoder memory consumption.
Note that log functionality will be reduced if worker process encoding is turned off, due to limitations in how we get log messages from the HandBrake core.
Fixed Foreign Audio Search choice not appearing when it's not brought in by a Picker.
Changed "total" count for audio and subtitle tracks in summary to always reflect the source track count and not count duplicated output tracks.

Released VidCoder 4.29 (https://github.com/RandomEngy/VidCoder/releases/tag/v4.29):

Fixed drag and drop reorder not affecting output for subtitles and audio tracks.
Fixed Foreign Audio Search choice not appearing when it's not brought in by a Picker.
Changed "total" count for audio and subtitle tracks in summary to always reflect the source track count and not count duplicated output tracks.

Released VidCoder 5.1 Beta (https://github.com/RandomEngy/VidCoder/releases/tag/v5.1-beta):

Added shortcut buttons to source panel to change audio and video encoding settings.
Removed Advanced tab. It had not been updated in years, is missing a ton of options, bad defaults, inaccurate tooltips and no protection from invalid settings. The recommended way to alter these settings is now through the More Options box and referring to up-to-date documentation on the settings: https://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/MeGUI/x264_Settings

one request for beta

"Changed to use .part suffix while encoding the video. When done, it deletes failed partial files and renames completed files "

can we get an option in settings to DISABLE autodeleting failed PARTs ?
i like junk cauze it allows me to know if a movie failed (happens 1 in 20 movies) so i can deal with it
it also allows me to stop encoding any time and take a look at the incomplete file for quality/info
watching the completed tab is not much use for me cauze it shows few stuff and some times the failures get lost in the sea of succesfull ones

"Having trouble reproducing those bugs. It brings the correct values back when editing for me. Maybe you could break them out into explicit steps?"

its a little bit hard for me as well :D
some times it works some times doesnt
have definetaly seen it tho
even today i saw it with beta 5.0
basically district9 was too big stopped it mid way edit and settings were like preset instead of what i have setup them
i remember it specifically cauze i had to stop the movie 2 times . started with qrf 19 then 20 then had to do it in 21 . both 2 times i restored settings the audio went to the stadard 448kbs of the preset instead of the 640kbs i had choosen originally (cauze the movie was 7.1)
this DOES NOT happen if u restore a movie from the completed

as far as the other bug its not really important and only happens if u change the specific time frame that u got from the picker into something else and then proceed to restore a completed one . it will have a stuck name . not really important tho

RandomEngy
17th January 2019, 02:54
If you need to know when something failed I don't think a junk file is the best way to communicate that. I'd rather have something in the UI, maybe on the completed tab. Would it be helpful to have the tab header say Completed (27, 2 failed) or something?

napouser
17th January 2019, 04:01
how about if some1 decides to stop an encode midway . why not being able to look at the file to see the results?
also i am not asking to leave the part files i am asking for an advanced option to disable deleting. u can still leave the delete option by default for most people

RandomEngy
17th January 2019, 06:54
It's a bit more complex than just turning off deleting. If they get left there then the next encode is going to need to use a different .part name. If I added that option I'd need to rename the file to something like .failed.mp4 or .stopped.mp4 . But that would be a reasonable option.

napouser
18th January 2019, 09:38
yea good point. that would be helpfull
u see if u mediainfo a "in progress " encode it wont show much info
but if u stop it the handbrake will at least write some usefulll info in it like bitrate tags etc

i assume that other are more knowledgable in those things as i am not really that experienced only been doing this a couple of months

i think vidcoder has a preview function that can quickly encode a small portion and show it inside the program to get an idea

personally however what i do is when i add the initial queue of movies of the week to encode (lets say 25 movies) and i need to find out what qrf to use for each one (some take 21 some 24) i use the picker function of the program. this picker presets uses a custom folder for samples uses specific settings such as no audio no subs so u actually test only the video size and finally it allows me to pick a specific timeframe so i just pick 1 00 00 to 1 06 40

so drag and drop 25 movies
25 samples are created
if each one is around 100mb then the qrf u selected gave 2000kbs
if some movie ends up 200mb the qrf resulted in 4000kbs
and then u keep reencoding them from completed tab until u get the sample u want

not really. problem is inconsistent happens rarely and most of the time i am not even sure if the program changed the settings back to default or i just used the defaults for the preset for some reason
thats why i am asking for the qrf in completed becauze if i restore a qrf 22 and it goes to 20 then its obvius that something resets the settings

I cut out a small part (226mb) of an m2ts using Smart Cutter, keeping audio and subtitle.
Wanted to shrink it down to 70mb mp4.
Out of old habit I fired up first RipBot and it couldn't do it, all sorts of issues.
Then fired up StaxRip and getting all sorts of other problems.
I noticed your tool so I thought I'd give it a try, and voilą!
Worked like a charm!
So thanks for your work on this tool! It will be my number 1 from now on!
Much appreciated!

Been playing around with the subtitles and VidCoder. Read just about every thread and on the VidCoder page as to which are supported etc... Haven't found a guide on which to pick and the options for each when doing so. I found that just clicking on closed captions will bring them over, no need for default, burn in, forced. Now if you choose a VobSub and a closed caption, just check the closed caption and burn in the VobSub. That'll work. Not sure if Default with the VobSub and just checking closed caption will go through. If you pick foreign audio search burn in and a VobSub or any external subtitle and you check it as burn in it will not copy any video whatsoever. I can provide logs so you can see. Has the foreign audio search ever worked in conjunction with any other subtitle, VobSub or not? What would be the proper options when using closed captions, VobSubs, foreign audio search, either together, or apart? When it comes to closed captions and foreign audio search, I think just clicking them without any further options will bring them over. Thing is I don't think they play well being checked at the same time. It's tricky and I've yet to see any specific guide on this. I can help out with different combinations of either one. Oh, if you only have closed captions as a subtitle you have to burn them in. They won't transfer over by just checking them.

Did you notice a slowing down of the conversion encoding process when adding more than one file to the queue? I noticed my frames per second went down from 12.3 or so to 4.3 after adding an additional item after the first. At first I thought it was because I went from fast 720p 30 to fast 1080p 30, though then as the queue Jobs started finishing up the frames per second started speeding up.

napouser
7th March 2019, 11:34
not really a bug but still a wierd thing

how to reproduce

add a bunch of stuff to the queue (like 3 pages)

go to the bottom of the queue
select like 2 pages( more than what u see in the window)
tell to move items to top of queue
now if u click somewhere the highligheted selection should be on the item u selected and not the previously selected 2 pages of stuff
wrong
the system still has highligheted the stuff that isnt on screen!

edit- plz add an option for people that want to NOT DELETE failed items (just found a failed one within an ocean of finished stuff by accident)

dr_ml422
7th March 2019, 20:33
When you just have one title set in the queue and start encoding it will buzz right through at a decent 12 to 14 frames per second. As soon as you start adding more titles to the queue it starts slowing down. so I'm figuring that it thinks that it's performing multiple encoding but it's not it's still working on the same one title set. I don't have it set for performing multiple encodings.

Hi RandomEngy,

thank you for developping this wonderful software :thanks:

One thing, I have to ask you.
I use the portable version...
When I update the software, I copy the new *.exe in the old folder an then I delete the old exe-file because I have stored many own presets which I use. This presets are apparently stored in the VidCoder.sqlite file.
Can I do that so - is it right or should I create new all my profiles in every new software- version.
Can I copy this *.sqlite- file from version 4 into the new 5 beta version.

Thanks for your answer.

Hi RandomEngy,

today I started to test version 5.6 and noticed a small issue. When postprocessing encoded MP4 files created with Vicoder 3.16 with MP4Box the handler names for audio streams are reported as "Stereo" or "Surround". The latest version just outputs "SoundHandler".
You can check by using a commandline like %MP4Box% -info STREAM_NUMBER %FILE%

Maybe this is a setting you can control.
It was extremely handy for me.

request = allow edit current encoding in progress

basically u can reencode something u encoded from history
lets say u choose qrf20 it goes too big u go to history left click edit change qrf to 22 and add to queue
this is impossible for items currently encoding
u need to either wait for it to finish (1-2 hours) or stop it

also an other thing

also when u edit an item in queue it gets removed from queue so when u make changes and readdd to queue it wont encode it twice
is it possible to add an option (for advance users at least) to NOT remove it from queue (will basically encode twise)

thanks

also 1 last thing probably irrelevant to this thread

@RandomEngy

I was reading your blog on dark theme in WPF and it was very helpful. One thing I couldn't workout yet is how to style the radio button, ideally it would look like the one in the Windows 10 settings but it's my first WPF app so it'll take me time to get there. I was looking in your code how you do it but couldn't find where it's located.

edit:

Turns out my only problem was changing the background brush so my problem is solved.

request = allow edit current encoding in progress

basically u can reencode something u encoded from history
lets say u choose qrf20 it goes too big u go to history left click edit change qrf to 22 and add to queue
this is impossible for items currently encoding
u need to either wait for it to finish (1-2 hours) or stop it

also an other thing

also when u edit an item in queue it gets removed from queue so when u make changes and readdd to queue it wont encode it twice
is it possible to add an option (for advance users at least) to NOT remove it from queue (will basically encode twise)

thanks

also 1 last thing probably irrelevant to this thread

You can't change encoding settings in the middle of encoding a file, and it's not possible to add that functionality.

As for editing a queued item without removing it from the queue, in which cases would this be helpful?

found an other bug (carefull is in 5.1 version so might have been fixed already - cant test newer version cauze i still have an old handbrake core :(( )

when a movie is loaded with multiple tracks the indicator shows a false number than the tracks actually processed (and probably encoded) due to probably removing the unknown tracks

so for instance a movie with 3 tracks from wich 1 is unknown for number of reasons - maybe its unknown bitrate due to TRUEHD or something - the indicator shows 2/3
however if u press the triangle it will show all 3 tracks and checked. and if u press encode it will process all 3 tracks
so some times the picker says no audio but the movie has and vidcoder produces a fine encode with audio (it just doesnt process the language or the bitrate correctly and thus saying "no audio"

"You can't change encoding settings in the middle of encoding a file, and it's not possible to add that functionality."

you misanderstood me
i didnt ask to create a program that can change settings in the middle of the encoding process
what i am asking for is while the encoding is in progress , the item encoding exists also first item in the queue
despite however the ability to right click and edit its settings liek the other items in queue u cant do it for the 1st cauze its locked

now u might say well why do u care so much about the 1st queued item. ussually the movie encoding curretly is also open in the program and u can change the settings on it. yes. however if u have a large queue with 50 items the opened one might be an old item while currently the program might have reached item 30. u cant however bring the item 30 in the active settings to change qrf etc

as to why u asked. well maybe u encoding a movie currently and it gets too big. but u are not sure so u dont want to stop the encoding just add an other one with different settings . or u maybe want to create different samples of the same thing with different settings

u can do that if the item in question is in the finished items queue
u can do that if the item is not the first in line
or u can just add the movie with drag and drop from the explorer

obviusly all these things are extremely minor and not really serious
the program runs fine with or without the above issues
