Mine just crashes before it finishes encoding in 2-pass High Profile. I haven't bothered trying anything else because that's what I want out of recode. How could they release something this buggy and not call it a beta? I've got a HUGE build-up of VIDEO_TS folders bogging down my PC waiting for a new version to actually finish encoding. Have been waiting weeks and weeks now.

Has anyone got a link to nero 8.1.1.4? I give up! I'm sick of waiting!

The 2-pass issues (and other issues reported previously) are fixed. The fixes are going to be part of the very next Nero release (which is going to be out "soon", sorry for not being able to be more specific).

hi,

i´ve installed the fixes yesterday and there are no changes for me. encoding a batch with more then one movies with 5.1 audio tracks ends with a crash here.

perhaps someone could test this. i hope this will change in future.

now i have to encode the batch with video tracks only (no 5.1 audio selected) and then mux the 5.1 ac3 i´ve extracted from the vobs with mkv merge or something similiar.

When I run auto update it says the program is up to date, and doesn't update. I have yet to see a version of recode newer than 3.0.3.0 available anywhere. Mediator - its been a while since you posted, when will there be an update? Recode is unusable for me in its current state.

...beyond silly...almost 3 months and still no fix for broken software that can't be used...I think it's time we spoke up and voiced our displeasure with a few nasty emails to ahead.

I'm system developer myself and I know that software development using milestone and gates and qs tends to slow down development in favor of software quality - and if used right this tradeoff is fair...
But what I also see is a raising tendency of going on from one version to the next without trying to get the latest version stable. So IF most of you at ahead are already developing the next version and this is why its taking so long to fix the current version: Please spread the word: Me and a raising number of users are not willing to pay money for a new version which fixes old bugs and introduces new ones...

3 month to fix an issue that makes the software unusable is too much ! Please carry this to the persons in charge. I always try to stay polite and therefore some people made the mistake of not taking seroius what I had to say... So... I'm getting really angry and start to think that Version 7 of Nero should have stayed my last Nero Version...
Consider to release Betas to interested indiviuals (with no support etc ...)

But once again I'm very happy to see that you are still here with us and hope that ahead (or you) keep it that way...

Agreed, I studied Computer Science in college, and would much rather be on a list of people testing out a beta patch than have to wait this long. I appreciate you guys trying to give updates and not wanting to commit to a GA release date but if its going to take this long at least offer up a beta patch.

So now there is only on big issue that keeps me using AutoGK instead of nero sometimes...

It's AC3 ! I still want to keep AC3 Audio since I got an older AV-Receiver.
Has someone found a way to recode using nero recode avc-profile (not sony ps3) and then maybe to remux it to avchd,vob or m2ts so ps3 does play it ?

W00t! 2-pass is back :) Was worried, given Mister Nobody's report, but 3.1.2.0 ran successfully on my first test disk last night, even with a bunch of extra options turned on to see if I could get it to crash: motion adaptive frame rate, extra reference frames, motion adaptive deinterlace (on the extras title; main title was progressive), and 8x8 transform.

Used the new Nero Digital AVC profile, rather than my usual "Nero Cinema AVC". Bit rate was about 915kbps.

Noticed one difference, possibly not that significant: The source video was shot on film and at times had some grainy-ness visible in the original - the encode seemed to emphasize the grain more than I would have expected. Would any of the settings help with this?

Going to try some more disks today, and will report in if I see any problems.

Any recommendations for optimal settings to use for converting things for PC/laptop viewing at around ~900kbps?

There is a lot of interesting info in this thread regarding Recode 3.

I'd like to see a summary though. I am still using Nero 7, which of course uses Recode 2. I don't know if it's worth it to me to upgrade to Nero 8. The only possible reason to do so, that I can think of, is if the new Recode is a lot better.

I don't do HD encodings, nor do I have dual-layer burning capability, so none of that would be a consideration. I do use Recode to encode movies for my Pocket PC or my Ipod, and sometimes higher quality (not HD though) for playback on the computer.

Does the current version of Recode 3 provide enough benefit to justify an upgrade from Nero 7 to Nero 8?

Besides Recode, has anyone found any other advantages to Nero 8, over Nero 7? What about disadvantages?

Looks like the declining bitrate issue has been fixed. Everything looks good so far (my first try another software crashed, not Recode). Thanks to Ahead for fixing the bugs!

Did Nero Vision in 7 do DVD encoding from FLV? I've found, in general, that Nero Vision on 8.2.8.0 and the current one is a bit more tolerant about iffy input files than 7.x or 8.1.1.4 was, and I think burning FLVs to DVD was new in 8.2

As for Recode 3, the version in 8.2.8.0 was pretty much useless (IMO) because of the 2-pass bug... with the new one out only for a few days, the jury is still out. The new options look really promising, though.

I have a DVD that has multiple angles (2 actually) for each title. No matter which angle of the title I pick, when I encoded it with 2-pass AVC Nero seems to think it needs to scale it all the way up to 1920x1080, complete with black bars on the sides. Encoding performance drops to ridiculously slow levels. For this particular DVD I have to go into each title and manually disable the auto resize in the video settings.

Okay now I tried an SD MPEG-2 TV capture, 2-pass AVC encode. Once AGAIN, Nero decided to upscale it to 1920x1080 and of course it took forever to encode. WTF??? This is a really annoying bug -- do I have to turn off auto-resize on everything now? I did one DVD title last night and didn't have this problem, so its somewhat unpredictable. :mad:

Gee, the new recode 3 version is almost so close to be able to recode recorded h264 hdtv streams from the television it hurts. After my first tests, the following problems remain:

- If there are multiple AC3 audio streams within the stream, only the first one is listed and recoded. There seems to be no chance to get the second one.
- It seems only 1pass encoding works. 2pass encoding hangs after a few minutes for me.
- Haali Splitter incompatibility. I always need to uninstall it before using recode.

Anyone tried encoding for Ipod with Recode 3? Are there more presets for it than with Nero 7-Recode 2? Does it do it better?

Recode 3.1.2.0 comes with Nero 8.3.2.1 still has "SetPositions" issue with avs scripts + 2pass.
ASP + 2pass + avs = ok
AVC + 1pass + avs = ok
AVC + 2pass + mpg = ok
AVC + 2pass + avs = "The source filter/splitter does not accept SetPositions!"

I just installed the update. I go into Nero Vision to make an AVCHD disc and you still can not go lower than 12000 kbit/sec. ARGH. Is this a problem with the encoder? I need to go down to about 9-10 mbit/sec...

Not sure if it's the best place to ask, but is the 8x8 transform good? I never used to use it, and now I'm looking more critically at my movies and they don't seem as good as they used to. Blockier for a given quality setting - but maybe it's all in my head.

So I downloaded Nero 8 trial. I'm on first day so it surely did not expire. Most of it is working except I cannot select options 'Recode DVDs and Videos to Nero Digital' or 'Recode Main Movie to Nero Digital' - which are the options I need to use to encode from avs files. When I select that it tells me that full version of nero8 required and missing features: Mpeg-4 video encoding.
Is that normal? I thought that the trial version is fully functional for 15 days, no? Is there a procedure I need to follow?
I get similar window when I try to play mp4 file in Showtime - but if I dismiss warning I can play video with no issues. Pointers anyone?

In Nero Recode 3 does anyone notice a quality difference in Encoder Percision between Normal, Good, Best, and Extra? I don't. I just use Normal because it gives me a low encoding time.

Anybody can tell me what perceptive difference between the presets in Encoder Percision?

I always do 2-Pass Encoding BTW.

Hello Experts,

I am trying to find the internal logic for smart encoding. For ac-3 Stereo it works (100%) but for MPEG4 I could never get more than 0% resulting in a 7 h reencode for a 15 min Cam movie, that is definitly not usable. (1440x1080 with 25 or 29,97p)

For me it is not working at all, regardless matching bitrates and framerates of the source.

@mediator Any enlightenments for smart decision logic on MPEG4 sources in Vision and Recode. Differences in logic Recode <-> Vision ?

I see with sample progressive settings a 60fps resulting evo. With 1440x1080p it should be 30. Correct?

Latest Version (update) installed.

there is currently no SmartEncoding to Nero Digital. As far as I can tell in Nero Vision SmartEncoding is supported for DVD and AVCHD targets. Of course, the source material has to meet the restrictions of the target format.

Hello mediator,

thanks for this info. That means (for me) that the HDDVD and miniHD option and plugin is unusable to me. Why is it only implemented for BlueRay and not for HDDVD ? There are far more HDDVD Standanlones as BlueRay Standalones. The only option to use the advanced features of the hardware now is to create your own HDDVD compatible disks. This was the ONLY reason for me to spent money for the Nero8 Version + Plugin, as nothing else has benefit to me compared to version 6.
Do I have to wait for MPEG 4 support in MF7 or is a chance to get smart encoding to HDDVD plugin working in Nero 8?

While testing I figured out another problem. Smart encode AC3 5 channel source seams to crash the transcoding in the HDDVD module. I have to use an additional AC3 filter on the machine, with the nero ax there is no way to create a working graph for other applications. The crash is related to the audio part of the stream, recoding audio makes it working again.

Somewhere in this thread several people asked if it was possible to set options for multiple lines at once.
I often have several files > 50 and I want to encode them to AVC in batch. For every file I have to set the encoder, check interlaced (recode guesses wrong in 5%), select audio format, etc, etc.
Without a commandline interface or the options to set a default this means that I have to set every line one at a time.

Anyone any suggestions?

(For those who follow this forum closely, this is a repost but new in the right thread)

Is it me or is Nero one of the biggest disappointments when it comes to releasing their monthly upgrades? Its been over two months since the last upgrade and the latest version always tells me I am exceeding the max file size until I change a setting before it goes to encode.

I was hoping we would see 720p and no minimum bit rate for AVCHD but I am afraid we will never see that. Anyone have any idea whats going on?
