Nero Recode 3 (Nero 8.2) released

Today finally Nero 8.2.3.0 was released that includes Nero Recode 3.0.3.0 with quite a few changes/improvements/bug fixes, so I think this deserves a new thread. It can be downloaded as of this moment at the official Nero web site.

Installation process improved: I did not have to uninstall previous version; Nero features selected previously were autodetected and selected by default in custom install (don't have to uncheck a bunch that are not needed)

After a quick look, some new options for Nero Digital AVC encoder:

AVC Interface rearranged quite a bit (subjective impression - for the better)
Tips to show what each option does
Lanczos resize
Color correction / denoise plugins (may be great for old grainy video; may be possible to add custom plugins?)
Option to preserve AC3 audio; supports DTS (?)
Interlaced encoding
Adaptive motion compensation
8x8 Transform (previously only available in HDTV AVC profile)

Encoding speed seems slightly improved
Encoding speed counter (frames/sec) seems more in touch with reality (but too jumpy, some smoothing should be done)
By default, old AVC profiles are gone, but can be restored in More/Options/Nero Digital.

Now we just need to learn how to use all the new features optimally.

a) Why has the default audio encoding been changed to AAC-LC for Nero Digital AVC?

b) The Sony PS3 AVC profile doesn't make any difference
- i can play Nero Digital AVC (Standard) old/new with HE-AAC if run on the PS3 locally. Same goes for the new PS3 AVC profile
- i can not however stream either of the profiles to the PS3 without stop and starts
- PS3 sees Nero Digital AAC-LC audio albums with chapter and icons through NeroMedia with no problems.
- PS3 sees Nero Digital AVC or PS3 AVC video with "*" which i understand means not fully recognised

Good points are: -
a) seems to encode (even with "Best" setting) slightly quicker
b) files seem to be smaller for the same file. Why?

using a sample video encoded with Nero Digital AVC quality set to 1.56Mbs produce almost half the size when the "encoding precision" setting is set to "best" as compared to "good".

I can encode to "Standard" NeroDigital with AC3 track copying. Funny though I can't use AAC audio encoding, instead I have option to use MP3.

This is probably why there is no audio in media player classic. ffdshow does not recognise that code (I guess).

When the possibilty of adding AC3 audio to the .MP4 container was being discussed with JohnV (Nero AG Engineer), I was not expecting the combination of ASP with AC3 in .MP4 to be included.

Sorry to be the barer of bad news... but it's coming.

In some respects the Blu-ray and HD-DVD forums are partly to blame for this monstrosity by not including AAC audio in their specifications.

If they had, surround sound amplifier manufacturers might have included support for AAC audio decoding, as well as the new spec AC3 and DTS audio formats :eek:

Second, at worst, can you just demux that and remux into MKV?
Is there a constant quality setting yet?
For Recoding DVD's that are TV series - does it automatically make the files etc or just try to make one large movie?

Finally, does recode LOOK FOR its own filters first or use direct show? For example, it is a pain in teh ass having Hallia installed adn decoding TS/TRP since it would "break" recode unless you disabled TS (Transport support) so that the Nero Demuxer had "priority". This is something JohnV thought would be fixed.

Does the demo of REocde 3 work ( I am registered 7.0). I am kinda reluctant to buy it site unscene.

You prompted me to look for the newest release (v0.7.5.6). And yes, the AC3 stream in .MP4 is correctly identified.

By-the-way, I just tried MediaInfo with a 6Ch AC3 stream muxed into the .MP4 container using Haali's GDSmuxer, and it's still listed as being 2Ch... So I guess there must be differences in how the AC3 streams are muxed into .MP4

Nero doesn't create files conformance to the MP4 File Format(ISO/IEC 14496-14), they never did (except files with only one audio/video track and without vobsub).

The files created by Nero are based at ISO Base Media File Format (ISO/IEC 14496-12 or ISO/IEC 15444-12).
I would call this Nero File Format, like there is the 3GPP File Format or the iTunes File Format by Apple. A list of Brands/File Formats which are based at ISO/IEC 14496-12 can be found here: http://www.mp4ra.org/filetype.html

In my opinion the use of ac3 in a ISO Base Media File based Format, isn't that bad. But Nero should decide which file format they want to use - Nero File Format??? and register this extension to ISO/IEC 14496-12 for better interchange with other application here http://www.mp4ra.org .

At the moment the files created by Nero are a wild mix of different file formats based at ISO/IEC 14496-12. Nero doesn't know what they want or is unable to create a clean solution.

Admittedly .MP4 file support in hardware based players is not fully compatible with the MPEG-4 standard. But then again you have to work with the decoders installed within the players and amplifiers. Meaning support for TTXT subtitles and 6Ch AAC audio is not (currently) possible to implement. When support for VOBsub subtitles and 6Ch AC3 audio is possible to implement!

just let you know that using a fake AVI file as input (created by the makeAVIS tool from FFdshow) instead of the avs script, it works fine...

Here is the filters chain : File Source -> Nero MP4 Splitter -> FFdshow decoder -> Nero Digital Renderer.

If you use MP4Box to de-mux and save just the 6Ch AC3 stream in .MP4, MediaPlayer Classic's internal MP4 splitter can parse and allow playback of the "audio only" file just fine ;)

Hmmm, when using AVC/AAC the result files are fully ISO-compliant. It seems that some other requirement for making streaming to PS3 work is not fulfilled then...

Ummm....oversight.

When trying to convert a video that has an invalid audio track (only) i.e. DTS

The video defaults has disabled and it is no longer possible to convert just the video.

p.s. i also discovered there is a slight difference in the PS3 AVC profile.

a) the file is 16bytes different in length compared to nero digital

b) it auto reduces frame rate from 29 to 23 on NTSC videos

oh....and the streaming issue seems to be more of a problem with nero media home than recode, although i wouldn't rule out a bit of both.

This can normally only happen if you specify that you want to split the output file, but as I understand you didn't do this!? As before, would be great if you could provide the details.

When building transcoding graphs for different types of source files there are always alot of things to consider in parallel. The graphbuilding for this release of Recode was entirely rewritten for internal reasons, and although we tested with lot of testclips and different filetypes, there is always some small probability to miss something.

Anyway, the problem will be fixed as soon as it is isolated.

From those pics it appears that on the "Encoding tools" page you can deselect the High profile options (8x8 Transform) and it should fall back to Main Profile file, and if you deselect the Main Profile options (Bidirectional predition etc) it should fall back to Baseline Profile. Can anyone confirm this?

Yes, the used encoding tools (more specific: the used tool from the highest profile) determine the profile of the result file.

I'm too not able to use 2 pass encoding with recode 3 and AVC profile...
Another anoying thing is that the sony/ps3 avc profile seems to be buggy... everytime I try to select a second audio track nero crashes...

But I have been able to get around this using just standard nero avc profile... this did work...

What I read in other thread/forum is:
PS3 with Firmware 2.01 is able to play aac with High-Complexity and should be able to use 8x8 Transformation ... As far as I understand this did not work until latest firmware...

My own thoughts on Recode 3:
- seems like it's going to be nice, once the bugs are worked out.
- Better customization of profiles and being able to use multiple encoding options within a batch is a big plus!

- needs some UI streamlining or some way to set defaults:
with Recode 2 in 8.1.1.4, could set the audio type on all comparable clips together, with Recode 3 in 8.2.8.0, have to set each clip. When you're splitting a season's worth of DVDs with six episodes per DVD into a separate MP4 per episode, this gets very tedious.
similarly, if there's some way to select multiple clips and apply the same encoding settings (or at least set custom defaults) this would help a lot.

- one feature seem to crash: "motion-adaptive frame rate" for one (not sure if I need this but I was playing around and it crashed consistently when trying to encode)

- some titles open up as "disabled" rather than encodeable. Switching the profile to something else and then back to AVC seems to fix this, but very weird

- renaming files to be different from the title names (rather than "Title 1 (2)" etc) gets an error about "an object with this name already exists" (this happened on rare occasions in 8.1.1.4 also but it is consistent with 8.2.8.0)... seems to save the file names OK though

LASTLY, and most bothersome (enough so that I've uninstalled and gone back to 8.1.1.4 for now)... I'm not sure if this is the same 2-pass problem others have seen:
- using 2-pass, bit-rate seems to fall off over the course of the clip. I use ~910kbps, but by the end of files (whether full episodes or shorter things down to about 12 min, not sure about shorter) video is ~300-400kbps and very blocky. With 7.x and 8.1.1.4 bit rate was variable but even and never had these quality problems.

Any suggestions for workarounds? Or just stick with 8.1.1.4 until Recode 3 gets a few versions more mature?

Oh - if it matters, am using Nero Digital AVC profile now; used to use Nero Digital - Cinema AVC on Recode 2. Also tried the "classic profiles" option in Recode 3 and same problems with the "Cinema AVC" profile as with the generic AVC. Source is 4:3 DVD, some from 24fps original (detected properly) some from NTSC TV. Mostly interlaced; not sure if I tried any progressive originals with it.

Before i go out and purchase Nero 8, could someone clarify if what i am assuming it will do is true...

I have an LG super multi HDDVD/BLURAY drive and would like to archive my movies in 720p to DVD9... so what i am reading is that Recode 3 will take the ripped files and compress them to AVCHD to fit a DVD9 which is burnable on red laser media (DVD9)to be played in a standalone hd-a2 correct?

It seems Hardware accelleration in Showtime for HD-DVD (VC-1) and Blu-Ray (MPeg-2) with Interactive Menus isn't working with Nvidias 8800 GT and 169.28 can somebody confirm that their are problems with Showtimes Hardware Accelleration when Interactive Menus come into Play on the VMR9 Surfface ? (is really thinking about moving to Vista because of all this Hardware Accelleration Restrictions of DXVA 1.0 and VMR9) i doubt that 50% CPU Utilization should be there with Hardware Accellerating Mpeg-2 on VP2.

Im really amazed by their Coding abilities however they do it they do it the right way (i mean the Player Filters are another case ok the extreme buffering is not that nice @ all too ;) )

But all the Players have their Problems it seems strangely only with HD-DVD Menus Blu-Ray Menus works on both without Problems but HD-DVD Menus are problematic (Navigation in Showtime works on one with the Keyboard in PowerDVD not with the Keyboard but with the Mouse only Problem it seems the hotspots are not correctly selected jesus :D )

mediator, think you miss understood. this is not splitting from the end of the movie. this is like a chunk from within the middle of the movie.

i copied 4 of my backups using dvd decrytper it happened on all four videos.

The only thing i can perhaps stear you to is, these backups are a bit worse for wear and sometimes have trouble playing, thus, dvd decrypter has a lot of retries, etc. However, i have previously converted these movies using the recode 8.1.4 and had no problems.

Same goes for the movies for the videos with the 2nd pass crashes.

It would seem the latest version of recode does not handle issues with the source video very well as compared to recode 2.

i would suggest you need to create some tests with videos that have issues i.e. such as skipping, glitches, etc.

p.s. this was one of the reasons i converted my movies with recode 2, to allow be to play some of my discs that got stuck part way through the movie. till now, this has worked very well.

p.p.s i also double checked mister_handy's point about switching profiles. does not work if you have no audio stream. i.e. video with non-recognised audio like dts

The ones coming up as "disabled" on mine should all be supported - just plain AC3 2ch or 5.1. Once I played with the profiles, it did do the transcoding OK although the declining bit rate issue meant that the output files weren't useable.

Have further checked. by using the AC3 -> mp4 for the audio selection, this now works.
So there seems to be an issue converting DD5.1 to AAC on the 2nd pass. This did works with recode 2.

I have a number of videos previously encoded in recode 2 which fail the same way with recode 3.

Recode doesn't support constant quality encodings, mostly because an important concept of the whole app is being able to estimate the target file size(s). In constant quality (constant quantizer) mode, you'll also not be able to know what AVC level you end up with, which may introduce problems with certain playback devices. Nevertheless I understand your very valid request for this feature. Let's just see if something can be done...

after countless attempts the crash on 2nd pass could be reproduced. We found that it seems to happen extremely rarely. The exact code-point of the crash is identified and I am confident that the next release of Recode will not have this issue anymore.

If no audio is selected, or an invalid audio track is present, the video to encode is disabled and can't be enabled.

In other words, it does not appear possible to encode video only.

p.s. wish list item. able to save custom profile settings i.e. you've changed audio to default LC-AAC 224k where it used to be AAC-HE 128k, i wish to be able to create my default preferences without have to reset every video.

Thanks for your summary. Here is more feedback:

Can Frames/sec statistic be moderately averaged, say over 1 minute window? It seems Recode 2 calculated it over all time (such that the statistic provided no information at all about *current* encoding speed, if computer load changes); but Recode 3 gives instantaneous speed (on my system constantly jumping in the range 30fps - 150 fps on the first pass), which also provides no useful information.

A few requests, that you could pass on, if possible:

1. This should be simple: provide a window to directly type in final file size in megabytes, rather than have to go through Fit to Target / Select Custom / Ok multiple clicks. Also, I don't see why there is a minimum 30MB file size. Doesn't help if encoding a very small file.

2. Very desired by language learner: it would be nice to be able to encode 3 languages and/or 3 subtitles, not just two. Four would be even better, but three will satisfy 80% of the need.

3. Finally, some updated extended help for encoding options would be nice (maybe it's already available).

i presently convert my cd's with foobar2000 and the free nero audio encoder which allows me to create an mp4 album with song chapters and cover art.

track information is in utf and showtime does not recognise this.

when is there going to be an x64 version of recode. i thought video encoding is one of the things that can benefit the most from x64?

As a user with much less knowledge then many people here I would like to make some requests regarding clarification of the profiles or maybe some feedback from the program when choosing different settings. Does it make sense to choose HD profile for encoding DVD source material? My goal is to get as transparent (looks as much like original as possible) at the lowest possible bitrate (quality is more important to me then size, but the end result should have some benefit, ie significant size reduction). There is no obvious way for a person like me to obtain these results or know what to select and I consider myself much more knowledgeable then the average user.

i choose the option to subrip to save in unicode. this didn't seem to work. when i saved in ansi or utf-8 seemed to work.

however, showtime still doesn't show the .srt stream even when encoded with recode.

i can add there is still something not right.

using recode 3 to encode with srt subtitles give a file that displays the subtitles in both show time and media player (via ffdshow).

however, showtime does not show srt subtitles from other containers i.e. yamb.

so, if you demux the recode 3 file and remux with yamb the srt subtitles are no longer visible in showtime, although they are still visible in media player.

I tested the new version and found it to be a bit confusing as compared to Recode 2. I'm not too clear on all the technical terms and options. I hope to stick to settings which duplicates that what I got in Recode 2 to produce mp4 files that play well on my PS3. In Recode 2, my settings were quite simple:
* in the first screen, I stick to the High Definition TV profile, set target size (e.g. 2300MB) accordingly in order to achieve encodind bit rate of extimated 2.9M/s, choose the audio tracks that I want (and set to high volume)
* in the 2nd screen, I choose: extra quality, 2 pass encoding, simple profile

In Recode3:
* there seems to be many more settings which confused me as I can't seem to get excatly all the setting from the 2 steps above. Can someone help me with the appropriate settings to match what I did above?
* When I tried to guess some settings to best match what I did in Recode 2, something weird happened. I produce files that are MUCH too small compared to my target size. E.g. If I choose target size of 2300MB, I would expect a file to be around that size, not a resulting mp4 file that is much smaller than 2000MB (that is a big difference).
* I don't seem to see PS3 profile from the update that I downloaded from Nero
* I choose high quality and encoding time was much longer that in Recode 2

@Psythorn: the update which (among other things) fixes the reported 2-pass issues is planned to be released with the next Nero-version that is going to be put on the web. It's quite a couple of weeks (cannot be more specific atm, unfortunately). I'm looking if something quicker can be arranged. Cannot promise, though.

PS3 profile is visible after selecting the Sony profile group. One vs. Two-pass setting is on the right side of the main window (where you import your files). Quality is a video encoder setting, so you can modify it in the dialog that shows up when your press "Encoder..." in the tab for the video track.

Actually, the idea was that this should be less confusing then having the video encoder options entirely separate, as it was before.

re PS3, i am streaming over wireless and Recode 3 files stream better than recode 2. (don't think it matters with wired connection).

my PC transmit throughput is at 5-7m/bps and both ND and PS3 profile in Recode 3 stream (realiably with TVersity), unfortunately nero media doesn't seem to be efficient enough in processing and causes stops/starts as it doesn't seem to be able to maintain the wireless throughput.

If you still want to use the Recode 2 profiles there is an option in the "options" tab to do that, but you don't then have access to the Recode 3 profiles.

i'd like to second thegeby's request. There is especially some kind of incompatibility with the Haali Splitter. Once the Haali Splitter is installed, a ts file with h264 is denied and cannot be openend. When i uninstall Haali, it is actually accepted by Recode (though i had multiple crashes with my HD TV recordings). It would be fantstic if Recode would be able to handle such files properly.

There is an issue I would like to emphasize on, that has already been addressed by mister_handy. When encoding a number of files I would like to set the same options, audio options and bit rate for all files at once. It seems to me like a simple feature but one that is still absent from recode.

Will Nero support constant quality (like –crf in x264) ? I want to encode my home video’s at a good quality without using to math disk space. The actual bit rate is not that important, but is the only thing I can set in recode.

And a small interface remark. When testing I recoded the same video a couple of times. But only the first time a 2-pass is done. I assume that this is a simple optimization strategy, but it would be nice if this showed in the log file, because for hours I thought that something was wrong with doing a 2-pass encoding.

Will recode support x64?

If the file is larger than 4gb after nero recode is done just use yamb and spilt it under the 4gb limit. This works well for 720p and 1080p mp4 files.

I'm using the latest version of Nero Recode 3 to encode movies using H264@2Mb/s and AAC audio at 48KHz, 224Kb/s. The audio is garbled (sounds like it's from down a toilet!) – I’ve tried this on various players. If I keep the same settings but just encode a few chapters, the audio is perfect. If I change to 24KHz everything is ok (but I want to encode at 48Kkz for quality and compatibility). I assume this is a bug – has anyone else noticed it and is there a fix available? Thanks, Rob

I just read this from a review of iTunes 7.6 (http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/articles/comments/instant-expert-secrets-features-of-itunes-76/)

rented movie content now takes advantage of anamorphic encoding supported by the iPod and iTunes in order to provide a higher vertical resolution at the standard 640x480 maximum (the video file shown above has an actual resolution of 640x356, but is using anamorphic encoding to provide a proper widescreen presentation).

I'm wondering if the iPod Video profile in Recode 3 supports anamorphic files?

Thats strange since I found severeal posts that indicate that h264+ac3 is only possible if transported in a vob or m2ts stream instead of mp4 ...

CPU: Intel Q6600/2.4x4
OS: Vista Business, no service packs

Video was from a NTSC DVD source - 720x480/4:3/interlaced/29.97/6.05MBps average. I'm pretty sure I tried another disc with 720x480/16:9/progressive 29.97fps as well but I don't have those sources around to double check what they were.

I see the problem ONLY during AVC encoding setting the 2 pass . The is shown also leaving in the scrip the video stream with no audio. Launching a single pass, the encoding works fine with no errors. (and also no problem if i choose the second pass but of nero ASP...).

Except in this case its just a dumb TV show thats available from the broadcaster's website anyway. Most TV stations let you download their TV shows after they've aired.

I see this problem ONLY during AVC encoding setting the 2 pass . The is shown also leaving in the script the video stream with no audio. Launching a single pass, the encoding works fine with no errors. (and also no problem if i choose the second pass but of nero ASP...).

Mine just crashes before it finishes encoding in 2-pass High Profile. I haven't bothered trying anything else because that's what I want out of recode. How could they release something this buggy and not call it a beta? I've got a HUGE build-up of VIDEO_TS folders bogging down my PC waiting for a new version to actually finish encoding. Have been waiting weeks and weeks now.

The 2-pass issues (and other issues reported previously) are fixed. The fixes are going to be part of the very next Nero release (which is going to be out "soon", sorry for not being able to be more specific).

i´ve installed the fixes yesterday and there are no changes for me. encoding a batch with more then one movies with 5.1 audio tracks ends with a crash here.

perhaps someone could test this. i hope this will change in future.

now i have to encode the batch with video tracks only (no 5.1 audio selected) and then mux the 5.1 ac3 i´ve extracted from the vobs with mkv merge or something similiar.

When I run auto update it says the program is up to date, and doesn't update. I have yet to see a version of recode newer than 3.0.3.0 available anywhere. Mediator - its been a while since you posted, when will there be an update? Recode is unusable for me in its current state.

I'm system developer myself and I know that software development using milestone and gates and qs tends to slow down development in favor of software quality - and if used right this tradeoff is fair...
But what I also see is a raising tendency of going on from one version to the next without trying to get the latest version stable. So IF most of you at ahead are already developing the next version and this is why its taking so long to fix the current version: Please spread the word: Me and a raising number of users are not willing to pay money for a new version which fixes old bugs and introduces new ones...

3 month to fix an issue that makes the software unusable is too much ! Please carry this to the persons in charge. I always try to stay polite and therefore some people made the mistake of not taking seroius what I had to say... So... I'm getting really angry and start to think that Version 7 of Nero should have stayed my last Nero Version...
Consider to release Betas to interested indiviuals (with no support etc ...)

But once again I'm very happy to see that you are still here with us and hope that ahead (or you) keep it that way...

It's AC3 ! I still want to keep AC3 Audio since I got an older AV-Receiver.
Has someone found a way to recode using nero recode avc-profile (not sony ps3) and then maybe to remux it to avchd,vob or m2ts so ps3 does play it ?

W00t! 2-pass is back :) Was worried, given Mister Nobody's report, but 3.1.2.0 ran successfully on my first test disk last night, even with a bunch of extra options turned on to see if I could get it to crash: motion adaptive frame rate, extra reference frames, motion adaptive deinterlace (on the extras title; main title was progressive), and 8x8 transform.

Used the new Nero Digital AVC profile, rather than my usual "Nero Cinema AVC". Bit rate was about 915kbps.

Noticed one difference, possibly not that significant: The source video was shot on film and at times had some grainy-ness visible in the original - the encode seemed to emphasize the grain more than I would have expected. Would any of the settings help with this?

Going to try some more disks today, and will report in if I see any problems.

Any recommendations for optimal settings to use for converting things for PC/laptop viewing at around ~900kbps?

There is a lot of interesting info in this thread regarding Recode 3.

I'd like to see a summary though. I am still using Nero 7, which of course uses Recode 2. I don't know if it's worth it to me to upgrade to Nero 8. The only possible reason to do so, that I can think of, is if the new Recode is a lot better.

I don't do HD encodings, nor do I have dual-layer burning capability, so none of that would be a consideration. I do use Recode to encode movies for my Pocket PC or my Ipod, and sometimes higher quality (not HD though) for playback on the computer.

Does the current version of Recode 3 provide enough benefit to justify an upgrade from Nero 7 to Nero 8?

Besides Recode, has anyone found any other advantages to Nero 8, over Nero 7? What about disadvantages?

Did Nero Vision in 7 do DVD encoding from FLV? I've found, in general, that Nero Vision on 8.2.8.0 and the current one is a bit more tolerant about iffy input files than 7.x or 8.1.1.4 was, and I think burning FLVs to DVD was new in 8.2

As for Recode 3, the version in 8.2.8.0 was pretty much useless (IMO) because of the 2-pass bug... with the new one out only for a few days, the jury is still out. The new options look really promising, though.

I have a DVD that has multiple angles (2 actually) for each title. No matter which angle of the title I pick, when I encoded it with 2-pass AVC Nero seems to think it needs to scale it all the way up to 1920x1080, complete with black bars on the sides. Encoding performance drops to ridiculously slow levels. For this particular DVD I have to go into each title and manually disable the auto resize in the video settings.

Okay now I tried an SD MPEG-2 TV capture, 2-pass AVC encode. Once AGAIN, Nero decided to upscale it to 1920x1080 and of course it took forever to encode. WTF??? This is a really annoying bug -- do I have to turn off auto-resize on everything now? I did one DVD title last night and didn't have this problem, so its somewhat unpredictable. :mad:

Gee, the new recode 3 version is almost so close to be able to recode recorded h264 hdtv streams from the television it hurts. After my first tests, the following problems remain:

- If there are multiple AC3 audio streams within the stream, only the first one is listed and recoded. There seems to be no chance to get the second one.
- It seems only 1pass encoding works. 2pass encoding hangs after a few minutes for me.
- Haali Splitter incompatibility. I always need to uninstall it before using recode.

Recode 3.1.2.0 comes with Nero 8.3.2.1 still has "SetPositions" issue with avs scripts + 2pass.
ASP + 2pass + avs = ok
AVC + 1pass + avs = ok
AVC + 2pass + mpg = ok

So I downloaded Nero 8 trial. I'm on first day so it surely did not expire. Most of it is working except I cannot select options 'Recode DVDs and Videos to Nero Digital' or 'Recode Main Movie to Nero Digital' - which are the options I need to use to encode from avs files. When I select that it tells me that full version of nero8 required and missing features: Mpeg-4 video encoding.
Is that normal? I thought that the trial version is fully functional for 15 days, no? Is there a procedure I need to follow?
I get similar window when I try to play mp4 file in Showtime - but if I dismiss warning I can play video with no issues. Pointers anyone?

Hello Experts,

I am trying to find the internal logic for smart encoding. For ac-3 Stereo it works (100%) but for MPEG4 I could never get more than 0% resulting in a 7 h reencode for a 15 min Cam movie, that is definitly not usable. (1440x1080 with 25 or 29,97p)

For me it is not working at all, regardless matching bitrates and framerates of the source.

@mediator Any enlightenments for smart decision logic on MPEG4 sources in Vision and Recode. Differences in logic Recode <-> Vision ?

I see with sample progressive settings a 60fps resulting evo. With 1440x1080p it should be 30. Correct?

there is currently no SmartEncoding to Nero Digital. As far as I can tell in Nero Vision SmartEncoding is supported for DVD and AVCHD targets. Of course, the source material has to meet the restrictions of the target format.

thanks for this info. That means (for me) that the HDDVD and miniHD option and plugin is unusable to me. Why is it only implemented for BlueRay and not for HDDVD ? There are far more HDDVD Standanlones as BlueRay Standalones. The only option to use the advanced features of the hardware now is to create your own HDDVD compatible disks. This was the ONLY reason for me to spent money for the Nero8 Version + Plugin, as nothing else has benefit to me compared to version 6.
Do I have to wait for MPEG 4 support in MF7 or is a chance to get smart encoding to HDDVD plugin working in Nero 8?

While testing I figured out another problem. Smart encode AC3 5 channel source seams to crash the transcoding in the HDDVD module. I have to use an additional AC3 filter on the machine, with the nero ax there is no way to create a working graph for other applications. The crash is related to the audio part of the stream, recoding audio makes it working again.

Somewhere in this thread several people asked if it was possible to set options for multiple lines at once.
I often have several files > 50 and I want to encode them to AVC in batch. For every file I have to set the encoder, check interlaced (recode guesses wrong in 5%), select audio format, etc, etc.
Without a commandline interface or the options to set a default this means that I have to set every line one at a time.

Anyone any suggestions?

Is it me or is Nero one of the biggest disappointments when it comes to releasing their monthly upgrades? Its been over two months since the last upgrade and the latest version always tells me I am exceeding the max file size until I change a setting before it goes to encode.

I was hoping we would see 720p and no minimum bit rate for AVCHD but I am afraid we will never see that. Anyone have any idea whats going on?
