16:9 TV OWNERS PLEASE NOTE: -
Currently, most (if not all) ESS chip-set based players owners have reported having trouble displaying 16:9 square pixelled Mpeg4 encodes correctly. And contrary to popular belief, generating Mpeg4 encodes with PAR/DAR signalling (or using tools such as MPEG4 Modifier) will not help either.

What you need to do is complain directly to your player manufacturer!

This thread may also be of interest. This explains how a user generated XviD encodes playable on DVP 642/37 after some trial and error.

Thanks DJ.

How did you find this link?

When you visit Philips' "Product Support" site and look for DVP64x and DVP63x firmware upgrades, the old "Version: ver 0112 Posted: 23/02/05" is still listed.

Cheers

From that thread you linked to:

***YOU MUST NOT SAVE YOUR XVID ENCODED AVI in an openDML container format! ***
If you do, it will not play on this Philips DVP 642.
This is not true, at least not with the firmware that my DVP642/37 came with (1109). It has played every XviD AVI that I have tried in it so far without even the slightest hint of a hitch, all of which have openDML AVI containers.

The only problem I have had with it so far was with a single XviD w/VBR audio. If you watched it straight through there would be no problems but if you FF'd or RW'd during playback, the audio would get out of sync. I fixed it by demuxing to WAV and then recompressing to CBR MP3 and remuxing and then I could FF or RW with no sync issues resulting. I have played plenty of other AVI's w/VBR audio and none of them got out of sync when FF'ing or RW'ing so it must have been something specific to that file, not necessarily a DVP642 problem in general with AVI's w/VBR audio.

This might be a helpful tip for to some, the DVP642 has overscan/clipping issues with 640x480 xvid/divx encodes. If you watch a lot of fansubed anime, this is going to be a big issue. Reencode to 576x432 from 640x480 and you won't get hardsubs being cropped off by overscan.
