How do I make sure the speed max stays in place?

I have 8x DVD-Rs, the coaster I made has the following NERO error log:
[17:10:47] DVDEngine SEH EXCEPTION (0xC0000005: ACCESS_VIOLATION) was raised in NEROMEDIACON.DLL at RVA 0x0000DB63.
[17:10:47] DVDEngine ********END: _VOBS - Process VOB
[17:10:47] DVDEngine ******END: VTSTT_VOBS#2 - Process Create
[17:10:47] DVDEngine ****END: Create - VTSTT_VOBS#2
[17:10:47] DVDEngine **END: _DVDVideo - Create
[17:10:47] DVDEngine END: IDVDVideoSessionImpl - CreateDisc
[17:10:50] NeroAPI Burn process failed at 16x (22,160 KB/s)
[17:10:53] DVDEngine BEGIN: IDVDSessionBaseImpl - EndDiscAccess
[17:10:53] DVDEngine ..Flags=0
[17:10:53] DVDEngine **BEGIN: _MediaAccess::Release ()
[17:10:53] DVDEngine ****BEGIN: _MediaAccess::~_MediaAccess ()
[17:10:53] DVDEngine ****END: _MediaAccess::~_MediaAccess ()
[17:10:53] DVDEngine **END: _MediaAccess::Release ()
[17:10:53] DVDEngine END: IDVDSessionBaseImpl - EndDiscAccess
[17:10:53] DVDEngine BEGIN: IDVDSessionBaseImpl - RegisterCallback
[17:10:53] DVDEngine ..Session callback unregistered...
[17:10:53] DVDEngine END: IDVDSessionBaseImpl - RegisterCallback

I know I selected 8x burn speed, how do I make sure it doesn't try to burn faster than that?

Should I never buy 8x DVD-Rs again?

i know my recorder will do dvd at 8X and cdr at 42x ... err thats what it says on the box .. te truth is i burn at 4x and 38x because it does NOT burn at the specs stated on the box ....
i for one have not found a way to convince nero to not try the max speed and have to manual change it every time .. but i'm begining to think this is more of a nero problem than anything else because dvd shrink burned a full 4G dvd the other night at 8x with no problems.

nero is still one of the best windows gui bruning apps their is ( and one of the few software apps i'm willing to shell out $ for ) but it seems plauged by this type of problem ever since ver 3.0..( personaly i think because nero tries to use it's own internal aspi layer )

best i can say is manualy tell it not to burn at those high speeds.
