Subtitles on a DVD won't play in MPC 6.4.8.4

I am having no luck getting subtitles on a dvd (or on dvd files on my HD) to display when using media player classic (latest version). When I open the dvd, no subtitles are recognized in the stats window below the video display.
Since I made the subs, and the dvd files in question (with MuxMan) and since they play fine on my standalone player, I know they are there, but MPC does not seem to be able to find them. I have tried VMR 7 and 9 (in all configurations) to no avail. I also have the latest VSFilter.dll installed (2.36?). MPC will play them fine if they are in .srt format and in the same directory as my audio and video files...

Some help please!
