Opinion: mp2 -> mp3 bitrate?

Hello, all.

I've recently started to convert DVB-S (sat TV) to XviD+MP3 and I have a doubt: what audio bitrate should I use?

The audios I get are MPEG-1 layer 2 in the range of 128-192 kbps, and I have the impression I'd be wasting bits if I don't use a lower bitrate for my MP3 audio tracks.

Does anyone have an informed opinion on this subject?

Thanks in advance.

You will lose quality no matter what bitrate you use for transcoding. your best option is to keep the mp2.

Thanks for your answer.

Is it possible to mux mp2 audio in an AVI? If not, keeping the original audio is not an option I have

As far as I know it is not. However, unless you need to use the AVI container for some reason, you could mux xvid + mp2 into matroska via mkvtoolnix.

However if you need to reencode to MP3, the recommended quality setting is --alt-preset standard via Lame.
