VCD header trick...

Hi
I am trying to use the VCD header trick to get some MPEG-2 files to play in my DVD player, which does not support SVCD, at least officially. I have been using TMPGENC to multiplex the mpegs with the MPEG-1 Video-CD header. I tried using MPEG-1 (non-standard) and then burning a non-standard VCD with nero 6 but when i put it in the player playback was similar to what i get when i put an SVCD in my player: very choppy, both in sound and in picture. When i use the standard MPEG-1 header, playback is smooth but the picture seems to have been stretched vertically and i get a lot of visual artifacting. Is there anyway i can fix this
btw the MPEG is: 576x480 and 25 fps
