Pioneer DVR-106 book type

Most newer DVD players should be able to play DVD+R just fine. Since DVD+R is new, older DVD players don't recognize the format and choke when playing it. So if you have an older DVD player, use DVD-R instead. This is probably why no dual format burner to date have the ability to change book type as you can always use DVD-R if your player can't play DVD+R. Of course if your DVD player can't play neither format, then you're F'ed. Guess it's time to get a new DVD player!

It's a Scott (the same as "Apex" in the US i think), and plays everything I throw at it.
I just wanted to ask because I never heard of such a thing as different book types for DVD+R...

Actually, many dual format drives don't allow changing the book type.

i did change the book-type in record-now-max and the +r in my burner was then shown as dvd-rom by windows-explorer. so it might work with the 106.

alexnoe is quite correct - changing the book type is easily done only for plus-only drives with Ricoh-based firmware. I haven't seen any utility that allows changing the +R book type for any dual-format drive.

It's very unfortunate, too, because changing the +R book type to DVD-ROM significantly increases +R compatibility with set-top players. Virtually all of the "unbiased" tests I've seen comparing -R and +R media ignore the book type issue and therefore unknowingly make a less-than-meaningful comparison.
