Err I don't think I can wait 12 hours advice needed
Hi all I'm just getting started with backing up my DVD's so I could use a little help. Basically my first attempt is looking like it will take around 12 hours total which is about 4 hours longer than I'd like. So I'm looking for suggestions on settings which will still give me good quality but not take so long.
Sys specs XP1900,KT266A,512DDR,GF 4200, Liteon 166S DVD,30GB 7200 drive, XP SP1 Lastest Dvd2svcd & TMPG(2.511) settings Movie is 2:07:20 aspect 16x9, NTSC. No Subs, Audio 224 w/ No downsample,Frameserver Bicubic Resize. Bitrate tab Its between 125-163 minutes, I set cd size to 800 for bitrate between 2380-1770. Encoder is set to 2passVBR, DC prec set to 10bit I'll post the entire log at the bottom Basically next time I'll try CCE(VBR 3 pass maybe?) which I guess should be faster but I can't see it knocking off 4 hours from the total? Everything up till TMPG started its analyzing went really quick. Now its just dragging. The guides for setting up anything besides VBR seem kinda vague to me, mabye that means its not a good idea? But I'd appreciate any advice on different settings (CBR maybe) that would reduce the time while still keeping decent quality. Thanks. Edit - one last thing. Is there anyway to kill the process now and start TMPG or CCE over with Different settings? My experience with TMPGEnc (2.54) was using CQ mode. It is faster than 2 pass VBR, (but similar to CQ_VBR which I`ve never try). Quality is good for CQ values higher than 80. The main problem is the file size estimation, DS2 does the best possible calculation, but not always the final size is the expected one. Other parameter which is very speed sensitive is Motion Search precision (at least in CQ mode). I have these measurements done with the same 1 minute clips CLIP A Normal: 2:33 High: 3:33 Highest: 6:05 CLIP B Normal: 3:22 High: 4:57 Highest: 8:59 (CQ=70 resolution 720x576, in both cases) I believe quality is similar between High and Highest, but as you can see the encoding time is not. Thanks for responding guys. Since I just started it's all a little overwhelming right now, but after reading a ton today I think I at least have an idea how to proceed now. My original setup has ~3hrs left so I'm just going to let that finish.
I'm definitely going to try TMPG CQ next then try CCE VBR and see how long they take and also if I can notice the quality differences. Really if its between 4-8 hours I don't mind, I just want to be able to start the rip before I go to bed and then have it done by the time I get up. |

No question, use TMPG CQ. With your hardware, you should be able to finish in 4 hours with "normal" setting and in 5 hours with "high" setting, and in 6.5 hours with "highest" setting. The quality is going to be better than VBR.
