Brand New Rare Bug in InstantCopy? (with solution)

DVD: Disney's "The Emperor's New Groove"
Region 2, (English, Greek, French)
InstantCopy 7.0.0.91 Full Version + Reghack, though not used.

Everything at default, except a little "pushing" to the output size.
The process finished OK.
Tried the internal engine for burning, failed.
Used pdixtract+pdiGUI and made a VIDEO_TS folder.
Checked with Power DVD, it played ok
Tried Prassi, Record nowMax, they refused to burn it, offering no explanation.
Tried Nero, a File Allocation error. File '%s' is missing.
Re-did the ripping and transcoding on a different PC. Same thing.
Checked the transcoded VIDEO_TS foder, 77 files. The "original" (ripped) has 78. Sure enough, VIDEO_TS.VOB (154 KB) was missing!!!!!
Added it to the new VIDEO_TS folder, every burning program accepted it and it plays OK.

Why do these "one in a million" bugs appear themselves only to me?
Pinnacle are you reading this? EXTREMELY unlucky beta tester here!!!!

Well i have two movies too which RecordNowMax won't burn (Error Log prints out "DVD FORMAT ERROR") ... i have to check if there is this file missing too. Converted the movies with pdi2iso and burned it without any problems and works fine on my dvd player. But that can be a explenation for that error. Thanks for sharing this information.

Curious but anyone else encounter this bug about a missing VIDEO_TS.VOB? I just checked an .iso converted with pdi2iso and it had VIDEO_TS.VOB 27,704KB.

When you used PDIxtract was the resulting folder missing VIDEO_TS.VOB. If it was how about skipping PDIxtract and just using pdi2iso and mounting .iso with daemon tools and check if VIDEO_TS.VOB is there. Perhaps it's IC screwing it up and just taking wild guesses as to what could cause this.

Yes, it's true.. i checked it with SUM OF ALL FEARS (german) ... tried to burn the extracted files and got the "DVD FORMAT" error from RecordNowMax. Burning the ISO File worked fine on the DVD Player. I rechecked the ISO File and there's no VIDEO_TS.VOB file but in the original riped iso!

I have kept all the files, original and encoded, so feel free to ask me to check anything.
I just used pdi2iso. Nope. VIDEO_TS.VOB is not on the (encoded)mounted iso either. I was almost 100% sure it wouldn't be, as using IC7's internal burning engine had failed, apparently for that reason.

VIDEO_TS.VOB is the main menu....did you have it below 50%...another wild guess. How about doing same movie and only for testing purposes choose the main movie % at 100%. And also menu at 100%. This should go really quick. Perhaps if the menu quality is below a certain percentage then it would include VIDEO_TS.VOB perhaps. I'll make a mental note to check all my future rips to verify it being there.

We all know that IC doesn't allow you to uncheck the menu so that wouldn't be it.

Not all DVD have a VIDEO_TS.VOB.

The Matrix does not for example.

Backups that I have done with IC, which the original contains a VIDEO_TS.VOB, contain one also.

There may be a bug with some DVD that IC leaves VIDEO_TS.VOB out though.

As I said in my first posting, I left everything at default, except a little pushing to the main movie. IC7 keeps small files at 100% (I think), but just for fun, I'll do a "quickie" after I get home.

I did. Everything at 100%. Nope, same thing . Plus in the process, I discovered a new teeny-tiny "bug"
I'll give details with screenshots later in the day.
Cheers.

hmm i'm getting the same problem with a PAL version of Resident Evil. Spent days trying to work this out and eventually came here.

Funny thing is, I've also got the sweetest thing backed up already and went to check for the VIDEO_TS.VOB and it wasnt there but nero max burnt it with out a problem.

i've always mounted the ISO file and dragged the VIDEO_TS directory into Nero Max. This way I get to put a volume title that I want.

I've also had a few VIDEO_TS.VOB's missing along with other VTS_0x_0.VOB's missing from IC

now Nero reported it as missing the VTS_0x_0.VOB so I put them in and then my fussy Sony refused to play them, so I took it out and reburned and it worked and Nero didn't complain!

IC removes any VOB that is not referred to in the IFO's automatically but normally updates the IFO's to include this removal and it also removes VOB's that are 0kb though I don't know what effect this has but it does do it

it's downfall is removing the VIDEO_TS.VOB as this may still be needed yet IC has chosen to remove it. I've just done the Ultimate DVD which just so happened to have a VIDEO_TS.VOB which is the SPRUCE TECHNOLOGIES logo and not referred to in the IFO's and IC decided it was best to remove it!

IC needs to change its removal technique big style and leave all original VOB's intact and if you choose to remove a title then it leaves a blank VOB with PGC entries also. When & if they do this I don't know, but I can't imagine what possessed them to use this method in the first place

Missing VOB File

I had this exact problem last night for the first time with IC.

It was with the disc The Royal Tenenbaums (R1). IC transcoded everything just fine. It all played fine in WinDVD. When I went to burn with Nero, it complained that the VIDEO_TS.VOB was missing. After some checking, it indeed was missing from the transcoded output that IC generated. The original disc does have a VIDEO_TS.VOB file.

Oh, well... Since all seemed to be playing just fine, I used PDITool to make an ISO image instead of extracting the files. I then used Nero to directly burn the ISO to a +R disc. I did not mount the image with any utility like DeamonTools, I just used Nero's Burn from image command to make the disc directly, making sure to not make it multisession.

The disc played fine on my Sony stand-alone and all seems fine. I guess a VIDEO_TS.VOB file is not required to have a valid disc.

Anyway, this whole thing caught me by surprise. After having done more than a dozen movies with IC, this is the first time I've come across this weird issue... The only indidcation that there might be something out of the ordinary going on was that one of the Title sets in IC showed up with a negative byte count on this disc. This was also one of those funky Titles that will not preview, giving you a Corrupted DVD error. I don't know if this has anything to do with the missing VOB file, but it might...

It would be interesting to know if the rest of you who have had a missing VOB issue also have had the negative byte count issue on a Title set for that disc.

the negative byte is to do with the audio being LCPM 2.0 audio and confuses IC and its best to set that title to 100% as it only contains a static background pic of small size and hoooooooge size audio cos its 1536kbps or something similar. What does the Title contain?

play the missing VOB in a player, all it is is the SPRUCE technologies logo or whichever program authored the DVD, nowt special. you may have to press repeat first then drop the VOB in the playback window to actually see it

hope this helps
