i've not that many posts but i swear i'm lurking over here from a nice amount of time ... i'm fairly good at english and since i'm native italian and i've done classic studies too i'd be really glad to help u out with ITALIAN translation of -say- the DivX guides (to start with something...)
the italian encoding scene is pretty crowded, and there are a lot of enthusiats - too bad few of them really know english, and lotta get discouraged at the mere point of trying to understand the guides

i wanna definitely help

Hi, babaz:
If you want to translate, you should start with something.
I am the webmaster of the Spanish Translation Project and the project really started when I translated the first few pages. After that, Doom9 posted something about it in his news and some people joined the project.
If I where you I would translate the main page of Doom9īs site and some other pages. Then, you anounce that you have something done and people will join if intersted. My point is that the first step is the most important.
Hope we can see some Italian translations soon.

PS: the Spanish site is not up to date at the moment. Thatīs because I am not at home now. I promise I will update it today when I get back.

i understand, so i assume i need my own web-space then... well, i could finally put at work those 20megs on tiscali.it
let's say i thinked i needed some 'well, dude, u can start with this and that .. and so on...' - oh well, nothing difficult at all, i'll try
of course, do u think it's best starting off with the doom9 homepage (a page that changes quite often... ehehh) or maybe from the guide itself?
the guie gets updated, but not THAT often after all

anyway, tnx

No, I donīt mean you have to update the main page every day. At the beggining you could put some information about what you are planing to do, what have you translated and what you are planing to translate in the near future.
The Spanish Project started on June 18th with a text in English and a text in Spanish, explaining what I recomended you to do. You can still see that on the news of the Spanish Site.

When you get more volunteers you will be able to update the news page oftenly and coordinate the other translators to avoid translating the same thing twice.
You should read what we have been doing on the other forum threads (with "we" I mean all the translation projects, Spanish German and French).

Hi babaz,

nice to see another translation project...

Like epere4 said, you better start something on your own if you want to translate Doom9...
epere4's site is (nearly) identical to the original doom9.net which is also the future of the German project.

Here are some translation guidelines:

- Download doom9's site using Offline Explorer (www.metaproducts.com)

- Your site design should be identical to Doom9's (at least in the end, the German site isn't... yet)

- Create an own doc-overview.htm just like the http://doom9.org/doc-overview.htm . Mark the translated guides with a flag and the guides that are in the works with a "half-flag" or something (have a look at the German example: http://german.doom9.org/doc-overview.htm )

- Maybe you want to create a page with already translated guides (that will be the final doc-overview.htm in your language) so that interested people can see which guides are already available without being irritated by flags.

- Tell your visitors how to participate.

- Having done all this, you could ask for a domain like italian.doom9.net.

- And finally: Keep your page updated, at least the doc-overview.htm

These are just some suggestions...
They worked pretty well for the German and the Spanish project.
Don't hesitate to realize your own ideas.

Contattami per email (credo si possa ricavare dalle mie stat su questo gruppo sennō dillo), l'importante č che ci sia una coordinazione da parte di qualcuno e che vengano assegnati i compiti, vedrai come facciamo presto a tirarlo su ^_^

ciao ragazzi!
since this is a public thread, i think we should still use english... anyway, i'm very happy to see that many italians out there want to help - thank you!
reading this thread one can found a lot of good hints or points to get this thing started, that does not mean it'll be easy
some facts:
1. i assume we need our own web space, if the project growns up well then i think we can ask for a first level domain (something like italian.doom9.net...dunno!)
2. there is a LOT of work to do... i'm just goin' deeper in completing the Divx5 Gordian Knot guide... something useful - but surely not enough
3. this project needs coordination - one of use has to put thing down and simply say who has to do what and so on... this takes time of course

kaiousama, blueseb and Joe Satriani (not posting, but emailed me) on this board, i keep u on my buddy list! - if i can find the right mood, i'll make u know

for the thousands of italians out there... well, kick in and shake hands! we need u

c u soon

Hi babaz,

some tips for you..

1. perhaps free webspace is good for the start, but once you get into real business you could apply for webspace by one of doom9's hosters... like the Spanish and the German project.
Really depends on how much support you get - I can't complain.

2. Right, it's really a lot of work - that's not the smallest project after all... and epere4 and I also started with the Gknot/DivX5 Guide.

3. coordination... that's why the German page has its own site design. It's built so that most people can easily participate. The one to put it all together is only one person - that might be you for the Italian project...
But in terms of translations, I let my translators decide what they want to do, I do not order them to do this or that.
The translators should know what they do.. there's no point in translating guides that you aren't familiar with.

and yes, it takes a lot of time... you'll also have to decide if you only put those translations on the website or if you read them before. I've read many translations and had to correct a lot, but finally I've seen that it's impossible to read them all before, so I put them up immediately after checking the links.

yeah, the first to really register a domain... nice.

I wonder if that's really necessary, but it's good anyway.
italian.doom9.org is also okay in my opinion.

perhaps we should talk about general aspects in the "Translation Guidelines" Thread (which is sticky for that purpose...).

I do most of the coordination via E-Mail and now - *new* - via the new German Doom9 Forum.

Sorry that I insist:
You should translate the main page. I mean the menues, the title, etc (everything but the news). Then upload that to a free server (i.e. the one sherpya is ofering) and anounce that here. With that, I think Doom9 can anounce it in the main news. Then the page will get a bunch of volunteers and the Italian page goes high in really little time.
The translation of the main page is really easy and fast since there is few text. Take a look at the Spanish Site and compare it with the Main Site to see the diferences. You can put Doom9 in Italian (I mean that text in Italian) where I put "Doom9 en Espaņol", Benvenuto where it says Bienvenido, and so on.
Good luck

well... i've to say that this thing is going so fast... i mean, at least 6/7 people has already offered help!!! i'm happy, but neverthless i have to admit that i've very little know of web building and really i don't know if i'm up to the task, at least to the coordination figure. many of u ask for me to being the one who coordinates all, i'm a bit ... scared
anyway i'm taking note of any advice and ANY offer of help from you, out there. plz let me some time to get things in order and go on ...

btw, for sherpya:
i've seen ur rather new here, i've seen your homepage and it's a commercial one (am i wrong?) - so, if u meant that doom9.it and the space comes for free, ur welcome - but, if it isn't then tnx but we don't need - doom9 concept expresses from freedom for freedom, no buck$ here plz! this thing has to be commercial free, driven by pure enthusiasm and a bit of free time

so that's why i'd prefer italian.doom9.org (net) too
of course, if i misunderstood ur intentions, plz sherpya don't mind and let me (us) know
u'r welcome, as all the others

Second: i've begun translating the Divx3 guide (and the related files), down below is the list of the files and what i've done at the moment, please tell me if someone has just translated it,if not don't waste time on this file, there is so much to do.

third: anything news with the site? anyone is added to the translator crew? don't leave me alone ^_^

forth: babaz dont worry, i've a little of html knoledges and i'll help you in the coordination (due to my small free time) but is riht in my opinion you take the lead of the project, for the url italian.doom9.org is the better but it is not so importanto, the important is that has to be totally free.

but plz, don't run away alone!
well it's nice u've already done something
maybe it's better now go up with some space and some 'flag' system, just to avoid doing the same thing many times over (we don't really need redundancy ...)

anyway tnx
'offering help' at this time (sparse order)

Kaiousama's posting is a perfect example that a doc-overview is needed very much.

For the coordination-time, the German site isn't identical to Doom9.org.

If you don't know too much about HTML, just load the doc-overview.htm into a web-editor and add some flags, then rename it do index.htm(l) and upload it to a free webspace account...

One person has to receive all E-Mails and update this doc-overview (or index) frequently so that everyone can see the progress and nothing is done twice.

good luck!
