Player doesn't recognise audio file format

I have got a movie from a friend but we both can't figure out what kind of audio format it has.

I installed the old Divx audio codec and I installed the ogg directshow filter from doom's site, still it doesn't play the audio (the video is flawless and of superb quality).
When played with PowerDVD, there is still no audio, so it can't be ac3, right?

Are there any other formats? Or could the audio just be seriously messed up while the video is perfect? Not very likely, is it?

btw. the audio can be extracted (but not played) with VDub, and is about 84MB for one hour of video. The extracted audio can't be played neither in any players, including winamp (with vorbis decoder installed).

Is there any way to find out more about this audio stream? I opened it with the VDub hex-editor, but I can't find any info that I can interpret in one way or the other...

cut a little slice of the extracted "wav" file (0.5 - 1 mb) and upload somewhere.

I cut it in slices with hjsplit, is that ok?

use BeSplit v0.51 to fix it.
commandline :
BeSplit -core( -input c:\filename.wav -prefix c:\filename -type ac3 -fix -logfile c:\test.txt )

and please post your logfile when finished.

thank you, now the ac3 file plays in PowerDVD. Now it's up to me to mux it with the video (but I'll find out how to do that in the guides, I think)

Ah, very cool - the muxing was much easier than I thought. Just use Nandub

I think I'm going to use AC3 audio on my next 2CD rip as well, it's pretty nice and playback in Media Player is no problem at all!

As The Real had i have same problem wit a ac3 stream thats only 74 megs when converted to a wave in Nandub. So i tried the above after installing BeSplit an as you can see im still SOL.Any clues ?
Oh an yes i named the wav [test] an had it in the root of my D drive.

Are you sure you're using BeSplit from DSPGuru's site:

Unfortunately there's another tool called besplit and it's a file-splitter for BeOS and this is all you find on Google - I had to search the forum here to get the right link.

Yeah i got it from his site , thanks for the reply, i have a progy called Total Record that i can play the movie in wmp an record the sound to make a wave but damn alot o time there. Im gonna install the newer version of dvd2svcd an try it next.

Got the new verson of dvd2svcd an it handles the audio code just fine. Thank you DSPguru for your help wit the progies. With these Great Quality avi's ill just go ahead an make svcd's.

I'm puzzled.

I have an AVI file that has a wierd soundtrack. Somehow I can't hear it (it's silent). Opening the video file in VirtualDub and selecting File Information shows me, that the sampling rate is 48000 Hz, it has 5 channels, and the type is Unknown (tag 2000). Extracting the audio track to a WAV file results in an unusable WAV file.
My guess is that it's an AC3 stream, because the bitrate is 448kbps (according to my calculations) and it's a DVD rip.

Does anyone have a clue how I can extract the audio in a useful form?

PS: It's a 3 CD version of Lord of The Rings.

UPDATE:

I just figured it out. It is an AC3 stream. Cutting off the WAV header with a hex editor did the trick.
