Howto use VirtualDub as AVI-Frameserver for DVD2SVCD??

My problem is as the subject says.

What i have are some AVI´s with black bars at different
positions with different sizes. I tried loading these
files into VDUB, apply cropping and started the frameserver.

When i try to open the resulting .vdr-file in DVD2SVCD
the GO-button keeps gray and the length of the movie is
not shown. Renaming the frameserverfile to *.avi also
didn´t succeed.

Is this a problem of my installation or doesn´t this work
in general?

And, YES, I have used the Board´s search function

Most of the time a grayed out Go button means the source is read only. The source needs to be read/write capable. I don't know if serving in VDUB makes this happen, but it could. The other thing is you have to understand that DVD2SVCD serves the file as well. So if you do it this way it will be served twice. This could cause a problem in itself.

If you need to there is the possiblity to edit the AVS file to modify the position, size and other aspects of the video including black borders. If you need more info on this the best place would be the Avisynth forum or the Avisynth page at www.videotools.net
This may not be what you are trying to do, but I am just trying to offer an alternative.

Well, yes, this is an option.

I found this option too while using the search-button.
What I found looks rather complicated

BUT

Cropping with VDUB is SOOO easy, frameserving either.
If this would somehow work, even if encoding takes longer,
it would be worth it. (For me)

PS.: I forgot: DVD2SVCD is ABSOLUTELY GREAT!!!

No answer jet, so I have 2 suggestions:

Could it be that the .avi-file is opened for "write-operation"?
Open for "read" should be sufficient and solve some problems.

Second: For .avi-file operations the aspect-ratio should
better be calculated from the original .avi-file, as the original
file should (almost always) have the correct aspect-ratio.

Btw.: I´m having big trouble with the new 1.08.1-version
concerning aspect-ratio with an .avi file with a
resolution of 640x350 dots.
I always get ??what´s the opposite of eggheads?? (maybe ballheads *ggg*)
I´ve gone back to 1.07.4. Everything works fine with this
when 16:9 is selected.

Don´t misunderstand me: I love this program, but some
things could be made better.

Avi support is just a bonus and was never the intent of the program. Considering that others are not having a problem, then the problem is on your end.
DVD2SVCD went out of his way to create an all in one solution that is the best fit for most people. If it doesn't work for you get off your lazy ass and learn how to do this yourself. There are many resources out there so you can learn how to crop and manipulate the video. If things could be done better then you do them or shut up.

@gerdo For someone that has a free program and also with free technical help you sure complaing alot. If you dont like the answer and or answers you get in this forum, YOU know where the door is dont let it hit your a55 on the way out!!!

I just made suggestions, in a manner that i thougt
was friendly and without any aggression. And thats what it
should be. As I said before: This programm is great!
I just want to bring in my ideas to make it even better.

Biggest problem with that suggestion is that Vdub must use RGB video and DVD2SVCD uses YUY video. When you change the video to RGB it scews up the contrast on the video. I have tested and seen this myself. This may not happen with Avi's, but doing all that change in the program just for a part that is not the main focus of the program is just not worth it. You will most likely never see this.

Take the time and read up on avisynth and it's not that hard. It just takes some effort and time on your part. There are many documents at www.videotools.net and in the avisynth forum. All you will most likely have to deal with is crop, addborders, bicubicresize or whatever resize type you want to use, and maybe one or two more. It's worth the time since there are so many filters that are not in DVD2SVCD that you can use like my favorite Sharpen. You won't get support in this forum for them, but if you find yourself having problems the avisynth forum is a great place for help.
