lowering reference frames

I'm new to x264 encoding so forgive if this has been asked before (I couldn't find it searching the forum).

Is it possible to do some easy-fast-way reencode to lower the number of reference frames in an already x264 encoded file?

Theoretically possible but never implemented. And would inherently lose quality, like any transcode.
