VLC player not playing XviD in Vista 32bit

I just tried vlc player for the first time. I downloaded the 9mb installer from the official site and ran it. After installation finished I tried to play back some files. Although x264 playback was fine, all xvid videos have sound but no picture. In some cases the very first frame will be displayed and nothing further as the sound plays on. In the options, I can see some settings for the x264 decoder but no otions for xvid. Is this normal? I have vista 32bit ultimate. What am I doing wrong?
