Time Stamps in VOB streams & cat

I've read that VOB streams contains "Time Stamps". Exactly how are they used? If I take four VOB files from a DVD, do they all have time stamps starting from zero, or is the time stamp of one file relative to the previous? The thing I really want to know is, if I join VOB files using cat, will the time stamps (and everything else) be correct in the resulting file?

VOB files are one logical file split into several physical files
So you can merge them without problem

Now, if the files are coming from separate source you will a discontinuity
both at timestamp level (harmless) and at PTS level (more annoying)

I confirm that you cannot merge several VOB files from different sources without problem. The VOB and Cell IDs must be unique, and merging them will certainly confuse the players.
However, if you do that only to be able to play the VOB on your PC or to encode it to another format, your method might work.

A safe way to merge the VOBs is to use VobEdit's join VOBs function. I think VobEdit works fine under wine.
