DVP642 will not play end of xvid files

So, a few weeks ago I decided to upgrade my player to the latest firmware that I could find (1109) in hopes that my DVP642 would be able to play most xvids correctly. Before that, xvids were a craps shoot and likely were rainbow colored with smeared motion, or simply stuttered and didn't make it through the whole file.

Now that I've got v. 1109 in my player it plays all the videos I throw at it flawlessly until about 5 minutes from the end of the file. About 5 minutes from the end of a CD length xvid, the player stutters a few times and refuses to play the rest of the file. As you can imagine the half of a movie with credits is watchable (as I don't care about the player cutting out in the middle of the credits), but 5 min cut out of the first half of a movie sucks.

Anyone know what is going on here? I've searched and searched, but "end" and "stops playing" are horrible search terms that resulted in nothing.

Does the burned media play properly on your PC, or does it exhibit the same problematic behavior?

It plays fine on my PC. I've tried all kinds of burn settings like TAO, DAO, finalized, unfinalized, ISO Modes, CD-Rs, CD-RWs... same thing in every case.

Playback problems toward the outer edge of discs is usually indicative of low quality media.

You might want to try using higher quality media and burning at a lower speed...

I highly doubt it's the media, as many discs (of varying make) have displayed this problem. Also, it would play the same media all the way through previously (although, before the firmware it often decoded the xvid wrong causing funky colors and bleeding motion).

Strange...
At this point it may be useful to have infos on your xvid files (2 or 3 different) that may influence the SAP playing.
Thinking about:
- Matrixes: standard or customs; if so which? (MPEG4modifier)
- Size and bitrate and bitrate distribution -if zones encoding/credits- (VDM or any avi info prog+ DRF analyzer)
-Resolution (VDM or any avi info prog)
-Audio(s)
-Subtitle(s)?
-Xvid settings: GMC,QPEL, Consecutives Bframes if any ... (MPEG4modifier)

And or the usual encoding prog(s).

Also did you try burning on a DVD (RW or not) instead of CD to see if problem persist?

Sounds like a firmware bug, rather than the files (since it is happening to all files). Call up Phillips tech support and ask them what's up with this. They may have information about similar cases if other customers have also called up with the same issue.

These funky colors and smearing which you talked about used to be (maybe still is) a bug in DVP642 which used to go away when you pressed the system menu button twice. Have you tried that approach with this issue?

DVP642 can be compared to a dinosaur now. Once upon a time, it was good. Not anymore.

If it is, it must somehow be XviD-specific.

My 642/37 has the same version firmware (Came originally installed) and I've had absolutely no problem playing DivX-compressed .AVI DVDs and CDs from start to finish...

Indeed... It's always a good idea to obtain detailed information about the problem source file(s)

More-so for ESS chip-set based players

Well, for sure it might have been freaking out with CQMs, but even without any CQMs, DVP642 sometimes used to act weird, which was fixable using the system menu button. This was acknowledged by Phillips and was supposed to be cured in a future firmware fix, but not sure whether they ever delivered on their promises or not.

Haha, I found a stupid solution. If I break a 700mb file into 3 sections (2 doesn't work), they play through fully. I gotta deal with more pauses between sections, but oh well... no big deal (and it only takes a couple minutes to break up a file, so no big deal there either).

Hmmm,

As far as I'm aware... you did not offer much info about the of the size of your encodes (in MB's) or the media you were using!

I did... I said in my post that they were CD size (I expected you to know that that means 700mb) and in a later post that that the same thing happens with all media I've put in the machine.

Whatever though... I'm happy for the moment I guess. With the prices of players these days, perhaps it's not worth thinking about any more...

Please clarify - Are you now putting all 3 sections on ONE CD, or on THREE CDs?
