There's no copyright infringement by putting it up as a torrent, since he advocates the spreading of his own capture guide, and states that there's no copyright on it.

Has anyone read this? I think it's funny reading, and he does give some great points all the time. The only thing I disagree with is the use of DivX 3.11 (come on, it's a dead codec, not standard etc). As many of you know, my personal favourite is MPEG-4 video and audio in mp4, and he's a big fan the MPEG standard. At the time of writing this "bible," mp4 muxing tools weren't where they are now, so he recommends VCD and SVCD instead because they're standards, and play in DVDs etc. I especially like the part about avoiding proprietary codecs and containers, and the rant at the end

Yes, at least use DivX 3 SBC. Some comments (i didn't read everything in detail):

1) VHS is not 320x240. You should at least keep the vertical resolution (480 or 576) during capping. If you resize to 320x240 afterwards you will loose a lot of detail.

2) He doesn't use AviSynth. I think i don't need to elaborate on this.

3) He creates intermediair files two times (the first one after deinterlacing, the second one after denoising for input to MPEG-2 encoder). There's no reason to do this. There's no reason to not use VDub's frameserver either.

4) It certainly isn't a capping bible. Much stuff isn't covered, like chroma noise, interference, clicks/scratches, removing logos, etc ...

5) No discussion about capture size.

6) No mention of mjpeg as cap codec.

7) No mention of WDMVfW wrapper.

8) Final encoding format is a non-issue for me in a capture guide. Although i wouldn't recommend VCD. Of course for my own caps i have my perferences, but it shouldn't be a part of the capture guide. Imo, i don't see any reason to use MP4 as final container for analog caps. It doesn't add anything.

Well, I'm not saying he's an expert. He does some things wrong (480x360 e.g.). However, I like to read his capture guide mostly because of his opinions. He has some interesting points in why he wants people to capture and so on. His ranting on MPAA is damned funny Especially his hate towards realmedia and proprietary codecs/containers

But like I said, it's a very outdated guide (revised in 2002), and there are better, but imho this was the funniest and best written (even though there are lots of grammar and spelling errors) opinion-wise guide I've read so far. Give me more opinions and facts about this guide
