no, GSpot doesn't get involved in any modifications to the media file - information only.

the settings giving me fakes in gspot were
1) b-vop(off), packed bitstream(off), closedGOV(on)
2) b-vop(=0), packed bitstream(off), closedGOV(on)
i tried with avi1.0 and avi2.0

mpeg4 modifier will do that if your stream is mpeg4 compliant (xvid, divx, ...) and(!) is wrapped into avi1.0. afaik, it does not support opendml. if your file is avi2.0 u should rewrap 1st.
anyway, if u want only to watch the movie, use bsplayer. it has hotkeys for switching AR. the quickest way of changing AR of a stream :-)

It's easy to recognize constant quantizer.
There's no way to tell whether it used 1pass vs 2pass, other than maybe a careful examination of the ratecontrol algorithms of specific encoders.
Any distinction between CBR and VBR would have to be a heuristic, but it should be possible. One could look at the minimum required vbuffer given then nominal or average bitrate, and get a pretty good idea of whether it was intended to be CBR.

Would it be possible to add sth. like an indicator that indicated if the file is likely to play flawless on standalones? I know that QPEL and GMC will likely mean that it won't but there are probably other things. However different chipsets play different files so you'd pretty much have to include all (few) available ones. If not in the main window maybe it could be included in a plugin.

Anyway just an idea to help me (and the other) not so knowledgable (about divx/xvid encoding settings) guys out there

stegre - okay, thanks for clearing this one out

I just downloaded a version of the movie, that has got the right aspect ration "by default", however... Maybe you should consider as improvent ability to modify the file informations...?

I suggesting this in the middle-long developing time, just because it's obvious that you understand a lot about the file structure and headers and therefore it looks like GSpot is the best candidate for trouble-free in place editing of the headers of troubled movies

Haven't been in the discussion for a long time, but I'd like to see extended DVD-support in GSpot, like automatically selecting the main movie on a DVD and give the details about it (including subtitle languages, audio streams and their names, total main movie size and bitrate etc). Perhaps a "DVD-mode/tab"? Any thoughts on this?

I still prefer GSpot 2.21 to any of the new versions. I've tried to adjust to the new versions but the interface is nowhere near as good as the old. In the new versions the runtime field is cut off, so that a file that is 1 hour, 43 minutes, 27 seconds is shown as "01:43:". Also, the audio bitrate field doesn't give me any information as to whether it is CBR or VBR like the old version does. When a new version comes out I try it, but I always end up going back to 2.21 because it is the only one that gives me what I want in a neat and tidy package.

I appreciate the hard work that goes into all the versions, though.

Which version would DivX501b481 be?

I've noticed it's sometimes written Build instead of b like this: DivX500Build413
What defines when it's b and when it's Build?
I mean does it depend on the encoding utility or does it depend on the codec version? anyne know?

Sounds like it may be DivX5.0.2. And yes the "b" does stand for "build"

With regard to GSpot, I recieved an e-mail from an AVS forum member, asking if interlaced detection can be added for Mpeg4 streams.

What do you think... is it possble?

Display Aspect Ratio following the MPEG-4 standard (like XviD) would be awesome too. You know, an edit function, lik MPEG4Modifier? But with support for *.avi 2.0 and *.mp4 file format. And if it's not too much too ask for, track language edit like QuickTime Pro, and tags like abcavi... but it already has this, but it's not as easy to know where to put the tags, since it's not informative of what the sections are

I am having problems too with GSpot and XviD. I am using the same GSpot version, and XviD 1.1 Beta. For some reason, some XviD encoded movies show up as having N-Vop in GSpot, even though I didn't choose packed bitstream and MPEG4Modifier says that there's no packed bitstream.
