Noob question about adding ass sub to dvd, please read.

Hi guys. I am trying to make a dvd using dvdlab pro, i can add the .m2v and the .mp2 files but i am having a problem with the subs. The subs i want to add are in .ass format. What i have to do so that i can add these subs to dvdlab pro.

I tried to convert them to srt. Then i opened them with dvdlabpro but some subs overlaped others.and i couldn't generate them. The problem with overlapping is that sometimes there are subs at the top of the screen and the bottom at the same time (like in animes where they put the explanations in the top), is there a way so i can have subs in the top and in the bottom in a dvd at th same time.

Sorry for these questions, maybe they sound stupid. I would apreciate it if someone would suggest any sollution.

DVDLab Pro has one text box I think, so you're limited to where you place that box importing srt (text subs). It will also import graphics format though (sub), so for top & bottom I'd try going that route.

DVDLab WILL handle any kind of txt subs (and only txt subs, although bit maps may be imported as well). You may add several subs but each of them will be treated as "single". In other words you may choose one of them while you see the movie.
What you need is "captions", i.e. subs always played with the movie no matter if and which sub you decided to see.

I *think* what spahar is after is display of 2 subs, 1 top, 1 bottom, but only one track so both show at the same time. I don't see why it would be a problem for the sub overlay track, but personally have no idea of how to create such a thing other then using something like textsub, possibly with blank background rather then video. Otherwise spahar could use textsub to permanently encode the top track, but I'm not familiar enough with ass to suggest a way to extract just those entries from his current file. Perhaps it's also possible to isolate top positioned subs using Avery Lee's subtitle filter, causing bottom positioned entries to not be displayed?

But then I may be wrong about what spahar desires -- if so apologies. :)

Mostly appearance of the subtitles in srt files is controlled by tags. For example [ i ] [ /i ] for italic or [ b ] [ /b ] for bold. I don't know if there are any for positioning on the screen, so you can try to dig through SubRip help files. Another thing is if DVDLab understands such tags - you can try to see. I know that Subtitle creator understands most of srt tags, but it outputs sup files (image based). Maybe this is the route to go. I am sure that the last version of Gui for DVD author can take sup files as input.

I think you are right.

AFAIK, in DVD Lab you set the box where you want the subs, then select options for font, type of rendering, color etc. -- don't think it takes anything but text & timing from srt. But I haven't ever tried it with other text besides srt, so I could be wrong.
