clip of a movie + subs

hi, say i have an xvid movie caled 203040.avi
and subs in the format of 203040.idx, 203040.srt and a .rar with 203040.sub

what i'd like to do is send a friend a clip of this movie but with the subs

the clip is in the middle of the film starting at 00:40:30

the only way i think i could do it is to use virtualdub, select the starting and ending points of the clip, save that as a file with direct stream copy.
then open the .srt and copy out the lines and edit the timing, right?

is there an easier way? i.e video editing software which will do it all in one go? take out the clip and the subs.

Could hard-code the subs in V/Dub... Do just like you wrote for selecting your clip, but add a filter like text sub and render new rather then direct copy.
