What Will Let Me Convert This?

I have a *.idx and *.sub file that I want to convert to a single *.srt file. What will allow this conversion? I want to do the conversion because my video is 699mb and the *.idx and *.sub file are 6mb and therefore are too big to put with the video on a cd-r. A single *.srt file is like 40k and would easily fit.

Using SubRip, you can save the character matrix and also the characters you type in for a session are stored in the buffer till the end of session so you don't have to keep typing the same character again and again. With SubResync, you will have to retype the same character.

EDIT: movie is 699 MB and subs are 6 MB? With overburn, burning 705 MB is a piece of cake. Nero has that option.

Last time I tried, I believe I had to input everything in SubResync. But there is no way to use/save a character matrix for sure, is there? So if atleast not for a session, for every set of idx/sub, you will have to retype.

How can you say that SubRip will give asynch subs? Is there any proof? Listed as a known bug?

Well, SubRip is frame-accurate, so there should not be any problems with timing. There will obviously be synchronization problems if your subtitles are form a DVD with a different frame rate, but you can use SubtitleWorkshop to re-synchronize.

As for character matrices, I know it says you should use one for each DVD, but it's perfectly safe to reuse matrices. I have one matrix that I use, and I seldom have to type anything anymore. There are some DVDs that need their own matrices, but that's less than 1 in 10, and often decreasing the OCR sensitivity solved the problem.

Also, now SubRip has a "Fill Char Matrix" feature: you type in a line of text, select the appropriate font, then move the text around until it fits, and SubRip will fill the char matrix for you.

The latest SubRip also has a "best guess" in the OCR window that you can fill in by pressing Ctrl-Enter, and confirm by pressin Enter again, or just use directly by pressing the "Use" button. So, if you filled the character matrix as above, chances are it will guess correctly, and you won't need to type it in, just confirm the guess instead.
