Putting subs in an AVI and burning (Looked at guides already)

I've got a Xvid .avi and a .sub file. Basically I want to embed the subtitles onto the .avi. This isn't going to be played by DVD Software. Instead, I need to burn it as one single .avi file so that it will play in my DivX/XviD-compatbile DVD Player. I've looked through the guides, here and on other sites, and I can't really find exact instructions for my case.

Any help would be much appreciated.
