Does anyone know if it is possible to optain details such as font name, font size, outline width, font colours and subtitles position from a SUP file? I want to be able to add new subtitles which are identical with the existing ones. Visually examing a SUP is not very helpful.

AFAIK, there's no tool available that can do this for you automatically.

BUT if I were you, I'd use one of the many online services on truetype font sites that offers a function to identify a font, by letting the user answer a bunch of questions about the look of the characters (i.e. "Does the upper-case 'J' extend below the baseline?").

Much like not that many windows fonts are actually useful for subtitleing, the more i think this holds for DVD sub fonts. The text is few pixels high compared to the the size it is displayed and it must be very well legible. I guess there are professional fonts especially designed for DVD subs, even tho a few TTFs may have similar properties. (So it would be hard to identify if the PC doesn't have the font installed).

But i guess as long as you get the size and color exactly right, a font matched visually ("manually") may give acceptable results. If you design the new subs in a image editor you may also be able to improve the result by changing line thickness, letter spacing or horizontal scaling of a not-so-perfectly matching font.

To directly answer the question - NO, it is not possible. A .sup file contains the subpicture in graphic form, exactly as it is stored on the DVD (not text - DVDs don't use text subs). It is nothing but a bunch of pixels.
