Hi guys, right now I working a project.
It requires me to put "Han Yu Pin Yin" (a mark how to
read Mandarin, u know the 4 tones). However I have a problem with subtitle workshop, this program can not read the letters like "ā(first tone), ă(third tone), ē(first tone), ĕ(third tone)". u notice the mark above the letter, it indicates the tone. I already tried all the charsets, ansi, default, GB2312, chinese big5, etc, but nothing can read the first tone and the third tone.
Can somebody help me to solve this problem?
Thx in advance.
Best regards

UTF-8 encoding should have all those characters, but I don't know if Subtitle Workshop supports that or what - I've never used it myself.

Could u tell me what subtitle program that support utf-8? and does the subtitler filter in virtualdub support it?
thx a lot, man.
Best Regards,
Hendra
If subtitle doesn't support it you could always use VSFilter instead. VSFilter includes the avisynth filter "textsub" which does support UTF-8 (and i guess also "normal" Unicode then..).
As for a subtitle editor that supports UTF-8, since noone answered in quite some time i assume SWS still doesn't do it :( Well, i write one that is natively UTF-8, you can find it in the link in my signature. But be warned that may not exactly do what you want. It is based on the not-quite-production-ready USF format. It reads in SRT and SSA as well, but if you need to output to another format than USF, you will have to use the pretty only 0.1.9 version, as the 0.2.0 version does not yet support SRT and SSA out. (yeah i know i'm kind of lazy, but i also will neve again change so much in one single version step..)

UTF-8 and UTF-16 are essentially the same, but in my experience having subs in UTF-16 is safer. Altho personally I'd edit subs in UTF-16 with a text editor after timing it as ANSI, there are a few sub editors out there that can (or are supposed to) directly support Unicode:
ChronoSub (Medusa) - It says "Unicode support"
http://sourceforge.net/projects/medusa/
Medusa 0.1.2.0 was like "[Q] Does Medusa support unicode? [A] No, it doesn't, actually. Only ANSI character set is supported." but its newer versions, "Medusa - subtitling solutions (ChronoSub)" do support Unicode officially. At least their page says so.
Sabbu (maybe this too)

visualsubsync (maybe this too)
