View Full Version : extracting/converting Nero Recode (MP4) subtitles?

I’m writing a small guide about converting the MP4 files created with Nero Recode (both ASP and AVC) to AVI and Matroska containers (and about playing them without Nero filters). I had no problems with audio and video streams, but I’m stuck with the subtitle stream in Nero MP4 files. I know these subtitles are in vobsub-like format (haali splitter and dvosub can display them) but I wondering if and how I could extract them and convert to some standard format. Does anyone has an idea? TIA for any info.

And what about chapters? can you retain that kind of info when going to the matroska container?

Also what about converting nero mp4 to 'standard' mp4 with 'standard' chapters and 'standard' subtitles for this container; or is there not such a standard?

Haali splitter can display subtitles (with gabest dvobsub filter)and handles the chapters, so it's probably a matter of time. I'm going to contact the author of mkvmerge about both issues, because implementing it should be quite easy (especially the chapters).

I've also contacted the author of haali splitter to get any information about the format/specs of the subtitles (i've tried an old version of dvobsub and it also rendered the subtitles properly, so it means that haali splitter converts the nero subtiltes to a format recognized by dvobsub)

an opensource implementation supporting the chapters is mp4box and osmo4 from the gpac project, this can be useful as "specs" i think
