dr divx subtitles filter

Hi everyone!

I read at divx.com that dr divx supports virtual dub filters, i tried the subtitler filter on dr divx, but, when starting the program it crashes.

i removed the plugin from dr divx and then the program starts ok.

so much for so called compatability.

can anyone tell me if there's a working filter that allows me to put subtitles using dr divx.

i know i can do this using virtualdubmod,but dr divx is so easy to setup and learn.

Hi!
If you want to add subtitles using Dr. DivX, I suggest to do it trough Avisynth frameserving.
Dr. DivX can open avs files.

thanks for your answer, unfortunally i dont gave a clue on how to make scripts.
i googled and i found out avisynth is one of them tools thats hard to learn(at least to me!)

can you shed me some light on this tool,or, post a link to a guide.

Well... here we go. There was once a thread I started about this subject, but I think I'm going to spend more time tring to find it that explaning you how it goes.
First of all, is better if you have AutoGK, not because you are going to use it (You want to use Dr. DivX, right?) just because it has all the tool you need for the previous procesing before the encoding with Dr.DivX. Anyway it is not bad to have AutoGK, it's an exelent tool.
Ripp your DVD in your HD (DVD Decrypter), then use DGMPGDec to extract the audio file an create the d2v file.
If you have already a subtitle file (srt) put it in the same folder (Actually this is not necesary, because in the script you are going to give the location of the files, anyway is just to make it easier).
Now you have to create an avs file: Open you editor and write:

LoadPlugin("C:\Programe Files\AutoGK\DGMPGDec\DGDecode.dll")
LoadPlugin("C:\Programe Files\AutoGK\filters\vsfilter.dll")
mpeg2source("C:\Files\Film name.d2v")
Textsub("C:\Files\Film name.srt")

(Of course you should put the name you already gave to the files and the exactly location of them... I've just made an example)
Save this file you made with the Editor not as txt extension but as an avs (or change it afterwards).
You can load this avs file into BS Player just to test how the subs looks.
Now you are ready to do the encoding with Dr. DivX: Load the avs and the external audio file you made when you used DGMPGDec in Dr. DivX... the rest I think you know already...

Did you select all the vobs with dgindex? you have to highlight them all when selecting them, otherwise you get only the first one. Though a vob of 10 seconds feels a bit short anyway :D
That resolution looks a bit funny too, what is it you're encoding?

To be honest, unless you really love dr divx (which would be fair enough), just use autoGK for it altogether.

yep i did select the 2 vobs. i previewed it with powerdvd and its all there.

The reason why im using dr divx is because i bought the 3rd season of stargate from play.com and i want to make a backup of all the episodes in to 1 dvd.

im only asking about the subtitles because my family doesnt understand english and i want to make a backup of the episodes with portuguese subtitles for them and i wanted to know how to it with dr divx.

about autogk....

it always crashes with me!

i cant afford to download that program all the time a nwe version is released(im on dial up) and 7 megs costs me alot on dial up.

dr divx never failed but doesnt support subtitles.

I forgot to say that the original dvds dont have portuguese subtitles.

autogk only works if the dvd already has the subtitles i want (portuguese) isnt it?

Your avs script looks good, it should work... just curious, did you try to open the avs file with BS player or Media Player Classic?
With BS Player (I think with Media Player Classic as well...) you can open the script and also an external audio file, you only need to correct sometimes the Aspect Ratio, and does it. I think this is important to see if your script works correctly and also to control the subs.

Hello everyone!

i tried playing the avs with bs player, it showes it as 4:3 but the vob is 16:9. i went it to options and changed the aspect ratio that was selected(original?) to 16:9 and then it played with the correct aspect ratio.

if the original aspect ratio was selected by default by bsplayer why was it showing it in a 4:3 ratio?

After this i loaded the avs in to drdivx and selected the ac3 audio file produced by dgindex. the problem with the resolution is gone, but strangely it recognizes the "fake"(isnt it?) vob as 4:3.

Any ideas why?

i tried to use virtualdubmod to back up the episode(s) with external subtitles using the subtitler plugin, but after the parsing the mpeg/vob file it displays it as 4:3

another thing bs player shows the avi file with subtitles(some of them have 3 lines) is it the font size? i dont have this problem when viewing the same avi with viplay

Ok, please don't forget that you are frameserving with Avisynth... you can not expect to see the original aspect ratio, [even if the d2v file supposed to keep the origional one :confused:], if your film is 16:9, you have to select manually 16:9 in Dr. DivX (look in "Modify settings").
About the subs, I personally don't like to have tree lines, but this is just my personal taste. When you look the film in 4:3 you see the subs normal (of course not the film), but when you select the original 16:9 AR the subs will also suffer the size change, that means, they will get shorter and wider and probably they will take more space, creating sometimes tree lines when it supposed to be only two. For that reason, I always take "Arial Narrow" as fonts (Included in the Windows Office Pack). They are, as already said, "narrow" and when you look them in 16:9, they will look as a normal arial.

Well, there are actually other ways if you want to have permanent subtitles: Frameserving with "VFAPI" is one of them... but I'll not recomend that, it is an old method and it does not work well with Dr. DivX anyway.
What you can do is just make your avi without subtitles, then put your srt file in the same folder as you avi and with the same name, then BS Player will load the sub automatically (Default), (I think it will load it even if it doesn't have the same name as the avi, it just need to be in the same folder) and if you have a player that support external subs like the Philips 630 or 642 it should work too!!

i have a friend that has the 642 but doesnt fully support srt subtitles. ive tried it with a couple of srt but it seems it doesnt recognize them, it comes up as martian language.

i will try to do it with dr divx and avisynth. i successfully converted one yesterday, there's only one but...

i have 4 episodes(avi no subtitles) and their matching srt in one folder,if i open them with wmp10 it plays them with subs(because of the filter).

untill installed the filter i used to watch them with VIPLAY and it showe the subs with 2 lines, since i installed the filter wmpl10 plays them with 3 lines. is there any way of configuring the filter and reduce the font?

About the Philips player, you need to have the last firmware with subtitles support.
About the srt files: Open your srt with VobSub/SubResync, make the adjustments you want, font and colors and then save it again as srt file. VobSub will cerate another file, besides the new srt, with the "style" extention, where are the necesary data for colors and fonts, so, anytime you load your avi (in any Directshow media player), VobSub will load your srt and and style file together, and you will see the subs as you want.
