People,
Stefan at videohelp agreed to host MenuShrink! That's great news because their server is soooo much faster than free.fr! Thanks a bunch to them!

So, here's a mirror home page for MenuShrink:

http://www.videohelp.com/~menushrink/

This should be the prefered download location...
Enjoy!

jeanl By the look of your avatar jean, you're too ugly for a mirror!!! :D :D :D

Also, at least on my PC, the img alt="" src="MenuShrink.bmp" picture is not showing (image at top next to MS Home Page).

Just wanted to provide a tip here. I found an easier way for me to process menu VOBs without dragging them into MenuShrink. I did this in WinXP though. I had copy of MenuShrink.exe or a shortcut of it and pasted it into my C:\Documents and Settings\username\SendTo folder. Now, I just right click on VOB in Explorer and send it to MenuShrink. ;)

EXCELLENT! I didn't know it was that easy! Thanks!

Right click a VOB (which one?) or VIDEO_TS.IFO?

BTW: I use that trick to get a VOB into VobEdit, too and open an IFO in IfoEdit or open a DVD in VobBlanker :)!

It's a feature I have asked jeanl to add so that MenuShrink is easlly installable and partially configurable in the Tools menu of PgcEdit.

Before I reinstalled from my crash, I couldn't get my VOB to open with VobEdit in Explorer's open with feature. Now, I can get to work with "open with" and "send to". It may be because your registry entries pointing to these special folders were wrong or damaged. Anyway, it's necessary to reinstall Windoze from time to time, to fix that kind of damaged setups. Thanks, Bill Gates!

P.S. Yeah, blutach, I know, there's probably previews in the menu domain which does not really count as a menu (because you can remove them with other tools). I agree I agree, but still (so to speak)!

thx jeanl.
actually this one had a year long intro clip for the main menu.
in addition the main menu is (well, was) way too long animation.
and on top of everything there was a pretty much dummy VOB for VMGM (i've seen similar in the incredibles). looks like disney just wants to use every single bit that's available on the dvd...

maybe we should have a separate category for disney DVDs...

edit: btw, what counts as unreferenced? what if it belongs to a pgc that's referenced, but never gets played (there is a pre command that always somewhere else)...?

regards
t :)

blutach
3rd May 2005, 14:01
Then it's referenced material. It doesn;t have to be played to be referenced. In fact, many titles are never played, because their precommands jump out of them.

You're absolutely right. If I remove everything possible with PgcEdit, I'm down to 1.2GB of menu. If I remove all the menus but the movie menu, then I'm down to 700MB (still, isn't that amazing, a KID movie!).
Anyway, I agree with you that only taking the size of the menu domain into account isn't very accurate / fair... But it makes for good entertainment!

MenuShrink Version 2.2 is here!

Version 2.2 has the following main new features:

You can keep some of the menus animated if you want to. The preview
panel has one more button to do that and tells you what the size of the original
menu cell is so you can decide whether to shrink it or not.
The progress bar has a much finer grain and no longer looks stuck when
loading very large cells.

along with a couple bug fixes.
Get the new version at the usual place:
http://www.videohelp.com/~menushrink/
Make sure to refresh the download page to get version 2.2!

Here's the change log.

UI:

The progress bar has a much finer grain (no longer looks stuck when reading
large cells)
There is a new "Keep" button in the preview panel, to keep a menu animated.
The preview panel now displays the size of the menu cell to help decide
whether to keep it or not.

Engine:

The engine now supports preserving animated menus.
MenuShrink now fixes the VTSM_VOBU_ADMAP table when it's not correct to begin with.

Bug Fixes:

Restore backup was behaving poorly when the backup directory hadn't been
created yet.
The number of included SPUs (subpic units) has been increased from 1 to 4 per
cell. This should fix problems previously encountered in some (rare) DVDs
(incredibles R4 for example).

Enjoy!

No, not at this point! Sorry...
Note, that that would make it very tedious for the preview, because presumably you'd have to be able to preview every single cell (whether or not it has buttons, no matter how short). In many DVDs there are hundreds of them...
To avoid that, MS would have to be smarter: detect that you wanted to save this menu, so keep any cell that plays right before and right after that menu... Impossible to do at this point because MS does not read the IFOs until after it's done shrinking everything!

That's a task for vobblanker!

Can't you keep the intro/outro animated by simply skipping processing the cell?

No, because MS does not open the preview on cells that are normally skipped (i.e., cells that don't have buttons, or have only 1 I-frame, or have tiny buttons, or have all NOP commands, etc).
I could add an option so the user get to preview all the cells that have more than 1 I-frame though. I'll try that...
Jeanl

r0lZ
20th May 2005, 17:01
Good idea, jeanl. Will be nice!
Maybe you should add also an option in the viewer to turn it off, so that the user will be able to skip all remaining no-buttons cells at once.

jeanl
20th May 2005, 18:17
OK Guys,
Check out the 2.21 beta here (http://www.videohelp.com/~menushrink/Betas/). It has a new option "Preview all cells" to let you preview any cell that has more than a couple I-frames.
Note: This is "tricky" (and I'll have to change the UI to reflect that)
In the preview panel, the "OK" button will behave differently:
- For cells that are normally skipped (no button etc),
*clicking OK will make it so the cell is skipped (as it would normally be).
*Clicking "Keep" will keep the cell animated. The slider is useless, except to see what's in the cell.
- For cells with buttons (the ones that are normally previewed)
*clicking OK saves the selected I-Frame, shrinks and keeps the cell.
*clicking "Keep" keeps the cell animated.

See if you like this, and also give me some ideas how to expose this "tricky" behavior to the user. The simplest idea I have is to change the "OK" button to a "Kill" button and change the tooltip text accordingly. Other suggestions are welcome...

jeanl

dirio49
20th May 2005, 19:05
Nice job
i like that you can select that what cells to shrink.
many be the ok button should be renamed to kill or shrink
nice job:)

jeanl
20th May 2005, 23:04
OK, I also changed the UI and the tooltips to reflect the difference between previewing a cell that should normally be killed (no buttons etc) and one that is normally kept.
The new version is 2.22 and is in the usual place (http://www.videohelp.com/~menushrink/Betas/).

This definitely sounds quicker than the VOBBlanker menu interface. I guess it's time I gave it a go - particularly with the latest improvements, as I like to sometimes keep certain menu's / intro's animated.

Hi Jeanl

I already made a screenshot and attached it to the forum, but I think this should be autorized by a moderator (That's why it does not appear yet)

In fact all the "Blake & Mortimer" R2 Edition are similar (they all have around 2400 MB of menu...because they all have the SAME COMPLETE VIDEO in English/French/Italian and Portugues)
Each language is about 430 MB

NB : You'll find attached a image with the file with their sizes

LoloMc won ! :)

jeanl

LoloMC, then it's really a valid record man! (even if it had been an interview, it would have been valid but here it's super valid if you will!).
To put pictures on the forum, it's easier to upload it to www.imageshack.com, then copy paste one of the links they provide. This way you don't have to wait for the moderators to authorize the attachment...

Sometimes I think authors just want to fill up the DL disc. I've seen several that include (rather than re-use) the same video several times. Could also be a byproduct of very ordinary authoring program that provides little flexibility I guess.

Sometimes it does feel that way. But remember that you can't always reuse cells (for example, from VTS to VTS). I've also seen DVDs that were so badly transfered it was hard to believe. barely 3GB for a 1:30 movie. You could see the pixellation and blocking without even looking hard. Some people have no sense of pride in their work!
Anyway, I'll be updating the home page to day...
jeanl
EDIT: The home was has been updated, LoloMc is now NUMBER 1 !!!
