Embedding translation subtitles only into MKV

Is there any current means to rip subtitles that appear in English-speaking DVDs that translate foreign spoken lines?

Eg. With a DVD that had this type of sub I had to rip the subtitle, manually edit the sub removing all normal subs leaving only the lines that represented a translation of a foreign spoken language. It is not a fast method, folks.

nb. In this DVD the sub lines representing translation into English were precluded with the language spoken by the actor in brackets (eg. (Russian) "dialogue"). Is this some of sort standard & normal?

PS. I have tried to insert the sub into Matroska container using AVImuxGUI without success. Zoomplayer sates I am missing a filter(s) though it will play *.MKV files created with Virtualdubmod.

these subtitles are forced subtitles. Please have a search for that.

I don't know about zoomplayer really...what format sub did you put in the mkv file? as a rule you'd need vobsub or vsfilter for subtitle playback anyway :)

Thanks, Niamh, for the heads up on forced subtitles. It will save time in the future when doing the subs.

I have tried *.sub, *.ssa, *.idx. These have been generated with vsrip, subrip. I think I might just burn the extra file when I backup the movie to DivX/XVid, rather than try permanent subs. Seems to be less trouble and it's just one small file.

Make sure you have directvobsub enabled (in program files> vobsub)
