Getting subs from MKV

Is there any kind of alternative way of getting subs off of MKVs other than by using VD or VDM? I'm having some trouble getting poorly muxed subs off several MKVs I have.

Can you explain how this is accomplished with AVImux GUI, I wasn't aware it was capable of doing anything like that.

Ah, I think I found out how to do this now after looking at some more threads I overlooked in my last search. Apparently the way to do it in AVImux GUI is to right click on the sub track and hit "extract", but since my subs are embeded of sorts I needed to use MKVextract GUI, which gave me perfect .ssa subs to load into AVIsynth.
