Hidden subtitles?

I'm currently trying to rip my R1 version of The Longest Day using the latest version of AutoGK (1.83), and I'm utterly stumped on an odd subtitle issue.

Anytime there is any non-english speaking in this movie, there are forced subtitles. They are most definitely not hard-coded, as they do not show up in the ripped movie. What's really odd here though, is that there are only two subtitle streams - English and Spanish. The forced subs are not however in either of these streams. In the English subs, it just says [Man speaking German] for example, or something to that effect.

I've read these forums inside out and got my hands on every subtitle tutorial I could find - all to no avail. Opening the idx file for these subtitles reveals that forced subtitling *is* turned on, just that nothing shows up. And even if something did show up, it would just be the above [Man speaking German] instead of the correct subtitles when I watch it on my DVD player.

I've opened the subs in SubResynch, where it shows there is nothing forced, I've enabled .adjustsubs in AutoGK Assistant, and I've (of course ;) ) turned on Display only forced subtitles in the Advanced options.

What am I missing? Why will these just not show up? These aren't somehow embedded in the video stream, are they?

I've never come across them, and so know virtually nothing about them, but closed captions comes to mind. They are muxed into the video stream but are not hardcoded into the picture.

What comes to my mind, is that there are not meant to be any subtitles, like in Hidalgo. I don't remember any subtitling in the Longest Day when they speak german or french, to be honest with you, and from what you say is in there with the english stream [man speaking german and so on] corroborates my theory :)

edit : I shouldn't be allowed near a keyboard so early, you DID say they were there when watching the DVD, ignore my answer :)

Thanks for the closed caption tip! It does appear that there are some present, and I've downloaded some tools to manipulate them. It shall be my weekend project!

I have a very similar problem and I hope your weekend project was successful.
I have Alias (the TV Show with Jennifer Garner). In some scenes, she (or another character) speaks e.g. Russian or Japanese and the DVD shows what they say (translated). I've checked doom's subtitle guide where he mentions the parts in Lord of the Rings which are Elvish and I thought this is the same case. But Subresynch does not give me any "YES" near forced subs although there should be some scenes.
