View Full Version : Burning in USF subs

I know this sounds like blasphemy, but is there a way to burn USF subs into video? TextSub doesn't support it, and USF has not been widely used. It seems like developement of the format itself has stopped, while U96 is slowly being developed over time...

But I'm getting off topic, and the object here was not to complain but rather to ask for help. While I know there are ways of converting USF to older (but more common) formats via Subtitle Workshop, I would much rather find a filter for AviSynth or VirtualDub (preferrably AviSynth, but I'm not picky) that nativly supports USF subtitles.

If you know of such a filter (not just for playback), please post it here :D. Thanks in advance!

textsub (from gabest, included in vobsub.dll) which you probably know supports USF. Not all the fancy stuff, but the basics are quite complete.

If you want more you will have to wait :(
I do have a rasteriser for USF that supports almost anything and even something more :D ..and i'm getting friendly with avisynth ATM.

The point is only first of all i now have a job that keeps me away from home during the week - zero devel during that time, then there are a few other projects that i want to keep going as well. One is sure the new u96 version (hell, it's in devel for over a half year now) the other is my new picture subtitle format that needs some software, including a AviSynth filter for it. But all in all as you can see it's all about Subtitles, both USF and picture like VobSub and OPS as well as AviSynth - so even if i work on another project you can think it will help me with the others as i learn to know how these things work.

[edit] to come back on topic, i think i could cram together a avisynth plug for usf before chrismas, but it would have ugly sides like probably not working/crashing with overlapping subs and some of the other more complex parts. It would be slow as hell, but i'm positive styles, effects and "simple" karaoke would work as well as of course full RGBA and (probably uglier) YV12.

Yeah, I tried textsub but as you mentioned, it's rather limited when it comes to USF, especially for karaoke.

That would be awesome. I would work on one myself except I havn't even glanced at AviSynth's SDK. And, while it would be rather ugly in YV12, it would also be the most useful :D.

Until then I guess I'm stuck with SSA/ASS without loosing some effects.
