i have a few questions about text-based subs (rather than the ones you pull straight off the DVD). normally i just use the .sub and .idx files, but i have a bit of a dilemma:
i have encoded my movie in 50fps (it was a field-blended anime, and i couldn't find a good decimation ratio that got rid of jerks). it plays back fine on my humble machine without the subs, but when i use directvobsub, the playback rate halves, and i start getting unwatchable jerkyness.
now, i've decided to use ffdshow's subtitling so i can keep things in YV12 (i suspect this is what's messing up the performance), but it doesn't seem to like the .idx and .sub combo.
i've used pretty much every text format i can think of that works in subrip, but none of them maintain the positions of the subs. i get centered, yellow text no matter where and what colour the original text was. i know .ssa seems to offer offsets for moving subs around, but subrip doesn't appear to even try to set these (it also should create a new style when the colour changes).
is there any sup-OCR deal out there that can keep the approximate positions of my subs? or is subrip as good as it gets.
furthermore, is there a directshow subbing filter that works a little faster than directVobSub? i'm on a p-3 733, and i'm running 512x384 at 50fps, while using ac-3 sound, so squeezing out every breath of performance is important to me.
