I noticed with certain DVD's, SubRip has problems reading subtitles off of certain discs. For instance, I have about 20+ DVD's, all from a single TV series, that I'm ripping, and the first two were no problem at all. Then, all of a sudden, from disc #3 to #5 (which is as far as I've gotten thus far) it cannot detect any subtitles, even though such subtitles exist.
On one disc, I cleaned the surface with an isopropyl alcohol solution, to decrease the block error rate when reading the disc... after cleaning, the behavior switched to this: subpictures could be read, but they were entirely garbled and distorted, making it all but impossible for SubRip to get a decent rip.
I found the solution was to rip the DVD files using DVD Decrypter to my hard drive... then, SubRip had absolutely no problems ripping the subtitles. I wonder if anyone has encountered a similar problem, and whether the cause might be some protection put on the disc by the manufacturer? Maybe the CSS encryption is causing this? All of these discs are CSS-encrypted region 1... the only odd thing is why I could read the first two discs fine, and then have no luck on the others.
Well, if someone (perhaps the SubRip developer) knows of the cause, maybe there's a way to figure out a solution. For now, I'm manually ripping the discs to hard drive first, but this makes the entire process take about 3-4 times longer...
