To be more specific, my SSA subs aren't appearing, other people's are working just fine. I've spent a very frustrating afternoon on this problem as I'd like to make the move to using MKV format for my rips with XVID video, AAC sound and SSA subs.

Anyways, here's the SSA file I've made which muxes in just fine (appears on subtitle menu in MPC). If anyone can point out what I'm doing wrong (and it'll probably be something simple) then I'd really appreciate it.

Andy.

just to confuse me even more I've just found if i load up my resulting MKV file in VDubMod and then save it again with everything set to Direct Stream copy the subs now work (and I now appreciate the point of PlayResY properly).

This does solve my problem, I guess VDubMod's got better error catching/ correction than mkvtoolnix but I'm still interested as to what I'm doing wrong.

I tested XviD+AAC+Your SSA with MMG 0.9.5 and the resulted file plays fine for me with softsubs. You might want to try a different version of muxer and/or splitter to see if it helps. As a side note, your SSA has "PlayResY: 1024" but if, for instance, the vid is 640x480, "PlayResX: 640" "PlayResY: 480" would be safer (altho, wrong PlayResX/Y shouldn't kill the subs).

Like I said, the resulting Matroska file works fine if I just re-save it in VDubMod so it must be an issue with mkvtoolnix.

And yeah, with PlayResY at 1024 the text is a bit small, Sub Station Alpha set it to that by default and I didn't even think about it till after I'd put the mkv together :) I'm not sure microdot subs will ever catch on.

Anyone got suggestions for Matroska muxers as mkvtoolnix isn't working so good for me. Anyone have any idea if plans are afoot for VDub/ VDubMod to be able to use AAC and SSA files?

mkvtoolnix works just fine, but it's been upgraded recently while Gabest's splitters haven't.
You mentioned MPC for playback, there is the issue, you need to disable the internal MPC matroska splitter, and use the one from the latest matroska pack.
Other possibility, use an older mkvtoolnix to mux your stuff, prior to 9.5.
(As liisachan told you, albeit quite rapidly ;) )
