Problem displaying muxed subs in AVI files

The problem is that I can't get muxed subs to work at all.

If I mux an SRT into an AVI (using AVIMUX) and then play the AVI in WMP, I see the DirectVobSub icon appear, but never get subs.

If I save the subs to a directory and add the directory to the sub-path for DirectVobSub then the subs do appear. So I know the DirectVobSub stuff works, but I can't get subs to work when they are muxed and there is no external sub file.

Is this possible in an AVI?

They show here with MPC and WMP 6.4 (I don't have 9 installed, and not planning to either)
Have you subtitles on both in the tray and in the language part in WMP? (in 6.4 it's on a screen right-click)

Alex, I thought I had read your entire site several times, but I never noticed the WMP warning until you pointed it out.

Nevertheless.... Other people apparently can get this to work.

I tired WMP 6.4 and 9.0 and neither displayed *muxed* subs. DVobsub *IS* loaded because the icon appears, but no subs. I turned on the "captions and subtitles" in the player, but no subs. If I drop the AVI into Graphedit, I do see the vobsub filter in the chain.

If I use external subs, then they appear. In fact if I turn on the "captions and subtitles" in the player then I see the subs TWICE! (once by the player and once by dvobsub)

I am running a fresh XP SP2 (same problem with SP0/1). I can try WMC, but people in this thread say at least WMP 6.4 should work.

Why would external subs work but internal ones not work? Dvobsub activates for both cases!

OK I tried MPC and....


It displays muxed subs, but IT is playing them. Dvobsub does not load.

I really don´t know if this helps you, but I got my AVI subs visible with this trick. When muxing with AviMux, expand the subtitle stream from the bottom field and click on "language code", then change language to something else and then again back to "English".

Perhaps you can help me.

I muxed an avi/ac3 with srt with avimux 1.16.9. I also installed and registered vsfilter (vsfilter_20040308.zip). The file can be downloaded here:

I tried to play it with wmp6.4 (crashes when opening the clip), and MPC 6.4.7.8 (VMR9 renderless enabled, but the subs don't show up).

Could anyone of you try to play the file (I also want to know if it is muxed correctly)?

file looks fine Wilbert... it plays correctly under directshow (wmp6.4 and 10 (dare i say it) and MPC) using Dvobsub...

I think the pb is that I have hardware acc. disabled. Is that true?

My videocard (GeForce Ti4200) is borked. I get colored blocks during boot up (on the hardware info you see). Pretty annoying if you want to change something in your bios, half of it is invisible :) In W2K itself, I got similar problems (lines/dots show up, etc ...). That's why I disabled hardware acc.

I'm not sure how to solve it (besides returning it to the shop).

I'm complete n00b regarding those matters... things always seem to work for me, so i hardly ever have to fix anything... :)

BTW - have you tried Matroska? Just to see if that works? Its not too much trouble since you already have AVIMuxGUI and MPC...

I had the same problem with my Ti4200 in the January of 2004. The reason was DAMAGED operating memory on the card. The only way for me was to change it at the garranty. I HOPE, it's not such a big problem with your card, but it looks JUST the same, as I got. :(
Another feature of that damaged memory was playing the video OR too fast OR too slow.
I hope, you'll solve your problem and advice you to do it faster.
