Subtitle font help...Kill Bill Uncut

Sorry if this has been posted before, tried a search but came up empty. I recently acquired a fan made version of the Japanese Uncut Kill Bill (I do own the actual disc as well) with subtitles for only the Japanese speaking parts. As some of you may know, on the original disc you either have to toggle or leave the subtitles on for all speaking parts.

My problem is that the font the person used is awful...it is see through and has jagged edges making it almost impossible to read. Is there a way to just change the font of the subtitles and reburn it?

No, there is not. Subtitles are stored on DVD as images, not as text. You'll have to get ahold of the original subtitles in the text form and reauthor the DVD using different font for the subtitles.

ok, but couldn't I just rip the ones on the backup version and change the font in a subtitle program and re-author that way?

Why do I have to take the ones from the original?

Sorry for the questions, I just am ignorant of the intricacies of all this stuff.

Yeah, that's possible, but you would have to use text-based subs (like SSA or SRT) then. Doing so naturally involves OCRing the subs, which is a painstakingly process in my opinion. You'll probably run into some sort of unicode problem as well ...

Now I'm not sure if I got your question right :-) Please correct me if I'm wrong:

You want to rip subtitles from a DVD and change their font. Right?

If this is true, it is _not_ sufficient to just rip the subs via vobsub, since this is an image-based format. You need to convert the subs to a text-based format (involves OCRing, I'm not sure if there is an easy way of doing this for non-latin characters - you intend to rip japanese subs, right?) and do the editing then. Once you have done this, you are free to leave the subs as a separate stream or burn them into your source video.
You might be better off by just using the timings you get from the ripping process and create your own, brand-new text-based subs from scratch ...
So, rip the fan-made Japanese subs from the DVD you acquired, edit them to fit your needs and you are set.

Al right then ... Just rip them off the DVD using SubRip, do the OCR, and you should be fine.

Ok, sorry for the delay, I was extremely busy a work and was unable to even attempt this.

I have decided to take the original subs from my original copy and edit out the English speaking parts as that seems easier.

Can anyone guide me through this step by step (or point me in the direction of a newbie-friendly guide)

Please bear in mind I am new to all this and sadly ignorant of the intricacies involved with this.
I wouldn't even bother, but I really think the uncut version is so superior to the regular version that I want to have the best possible viewing experience for this great movie.
