Making DVDs with subtitles.

Hello all,

I've made 2 DVDs following "The Matrix" guide for the subtitle part, for test purposes only. That is, I want to see if the procedure is right, I want to see where are my errors and what went wrong if there any ones, so I can get some experience before going to work with very large files.

Here is what I've found so far:

I CASE:

Resulting DVD came with subtitles at the bottom of the screen an you can see them fine in the PC (Using WinDVD 5 Platinum) and also they look fine on the TV.

II CASE:

Resulting DVD came with subtitles at the middle of the screen and they can't be seen on the PC (Using WinDVD 5 Platinum), but on the TV, they appears at the bottom of the screen and they CAN be read fine.


Both AVI files are for NTSC TV System, and no conversions were made to the origial AVI files from the original DVD's which are also for NTSC TV System.

III CASE:

I've found that one DVD shows up correctly in the screen. Perfectly centered, withouth any problems. However the second DVD appears more to the right side of the screen, I mean NOT CENTERED on the screen.

I've been thinking that this can be happening because the original AVI file, for this particular DVD, is wider than the file used on the other DVD, but I'm not sure of that. That could be also a codec problem, a bug, or something I'm missing during the whole process.

IV CASE:

I have noted that on some videos, I get the last line of the image (the one on the bottom) in the first place of the screen (in the top) over ther rest of the movie.

How do I Fix that ?

Why, according to "The Matrix" guide, I have to use IFO EDIT for PAL based videos and REJIG for NTSC based videos.

I know the differences betwen both TV Systems, but I can't tell the differences for both Authoring Programs.

Could you guys, tell me what are those differences and what could happen If I use IFO Edit to Author NTSC movies or REJIG to Author PAL movies ?

1,2 and 3 seems to be fine.....
4, well, many original dvds have the same behaviour.
Once in a while sub will be shown at the top (dunno why), although sometimes it's because there are other translations at the bottom
(not removable subs)(at least not removable without some efforts:D )
It's not only because of the matrix guide, it's a fact.
Ifoedit ain't that good at remuxing NTSC material, although this may be done, 1 can't always rely on the results, specially if audio and video are not in synch.
Why I dunno but since both are freeware progs and specially ifoedit is a very good tool I live with it:D

Thanks for your answer. It's always good to know why some program is better than the other. That also makes me ask you another thing:

Besides CCE 2.67, which is an exellent tool for encoding, is there any other encoder I can use for encoding my videos to MPEG2 format?

I've seen somewere that TMPGENC is another tool for this, but which one is better and easier to learn. Or is there any other tool besides those two ones ?

Let's just say I want to try some other options, to see if I can get better results using one or another.

About the IV CASE:

The line I'm talking about is not a sub. It looks like a line, from left to right, of about 2mm or maybe 3 mm (sorry I doesn't have a rule here right now) that appears in the top of the movie and what's displayed on it, with the same ammount of space (2mm or 3mm), is the bottom part of the movie.

It looks to me like the last 2mm or 3 mm of the bottom of the movie, is reflected on the top of it, instead of appearing at the bottom.

Strange isn't? :confused:

I only have 1 license : CCE 2.50 and I'm very satisfied with 3 passes encoding. Quality is something better than TMPGEnc and CCE is very fast using scripts. Can U post some grabs of ur imgs somewhere ?

NTSC is 720x480, fps is almost 30. U don't use any of those values in ur conversion as far as I can see.
I think U should follow the guides coverting with the right values and then we will talk about displaced pictures and subs

(If some word is strange or written incorrectly, that's because I had a bad night, and I'm still feeling bad, so please forgive me if any)

Ukendt, I was figuring out that the problem here was the size of the videos which are troubling me.

I want to keep going on this, not only for my own videos. I need to learn as much as I can, because of my job. I'm working with a client on (for now) a couple of demonstration videos for the products his company has to offer, paints, chemicals, wall textures, etc.

Until the last two weeks, I received the videos on CD. My job is to translate them from english to spanish and also if required by my client, make the subtitles for those videos.

But in the past few days, I received High Resolution videos from my client for the same work, but now I've been asked to put them on DVD, with selectable subtitles in both languages, english and spanish. English for those the hearing impaired and spanish for every one else.

By explaining this, I hope you understand my urge to learn this, and I ask you this: ¿Could you point me to a guide, with everything I should know, about changing the video resolution, from let's say 640x480 to 720x480, and the fps value ?

As I said, I'm using CCE to do my conversion, and I also saw that there's a method to change the resolution in CCE, but I can't remember the address.

If you know where I can get guides to do this, please let me know about it.

Then my friend, I must say U have to read and read again.
There are plenty of guides in this site and at videohelp.com.
Normally I would write a short guide for U here as I did before in this forum when I used CCE for making svcd (long time before dvd was possible to obtain and work with). At that time DVD2avi and avisynth, bbmpg and some other progs were used. They'll do the trick too today, making dvds but use of filters in avisynth ain't that simple anymore, specially if U want to convert from 30 to 25 fps.
If U want to make money then U must use commercial progs to fullfill ur task. I don't know these proggies but they do exist.
I suppose U mean videocds (VCD) when U write "getting the videos on cds"
(but again they could be SVCD).
I feel it wouldn't be proper behaviour helping out a guy who is trying to make money (U wrote "client").
This forum and the whole site is aiming to help peeps making their own movies from original dvds on a private and non commercial basis. Sorry...

Sorry for the confusion here. I'll try to explain what I'm doing and why:

I own the original DVD series, from where the video I'm working with, came from. That series is Band of Brothers, A TV Series from HBO about the world war II. I ripped the original DVD to my HDD, using almost the same resolution as my client's AVI file so I can practice first with my own video rather than taking the risk of accidentally damage or delete the only copy of product demonstration video my client sent me.

About the VCD, that's also wrong. First I receive the original video from my client. Then I copy the AVI file to my HDD and return the original to keep it safe in case of any problems on my computer. Next I begin to translate the video from english to spanish, and also begin to work with the subtitles, if they're also required by him.

Finally I put the AVI file and the SRT file on the same CD, including the appropiate codecs, if needed, like DivX and VobSub and then I burn it.

As you can see, the final CD is not even a VCD or SVCD. Is just a CD containing the AVI file and the SRT file. And also they're really short, so I use, 80 mm/202 MB Mini CD-R for them. And for a product demo CDs that size is perfect, because the 90% of those demos comes in 85MB to 150MB file size, no more than that.

However, the new project, which I cannot risk, is an 930 MB video file, which must also be splitted into chapters (Yep, long way to go) because this last video is demonstrating several products, about 50 different paint types, 50 different texture fills, and about 12 different chemicals (thinner, paint removers, acids, dryers, tints, etc).

If I want a movie, I prefer to buy the original DVD and make it part of my own private collection, rather than getting it from the 'net, which would cost me a fortune, because the internet access here is very expensive for a 56K line which costs me $ 48.95 per month. I can't afford a broadband line, which will cost $ 86.95 per month for only 128K.

256K at real low prices ($ 20.00 or $ 30.00) like the prices you can pay in countries like the U.S., Canada or England, are still a dream for most of the people living in Panama, and that's because the lack of companies offering the same service. There's almos not competition here for those services.

About the NTSC to PAL: Where did you read in any of my messages that I'm trying to do such a conversion ?

If you read a message from me about PAL to NTSC, that was for one of my DVD Movies, which happens to be one of my favorites, which I got in that TV Format, even knowing that I won't be able to play it on my DVD player. Want to know what I did?

Simple!

I got a cheap Selectron DVD player which can play DVDs from both TV Formats, PAL and NTSC, and that was the end of that problem. The type of conversion I'm asking for for, is how to change the video size from those 608x336 to 720x480. Not the frame rate or the TV format.

You have to agree with me on something: Making DVD videos is a time consuming task and it is also frustrating. If it wasn't because he is my best friend, I would not be asking for help on doing this.

The only time when he pays me for something, is for keeping all the computers of his office working, in good shape, and always updated, keep reading.

My main money income comes from selling computers, selling accesories, repairing them, and from offering priority technical support, where and when it is needed, besides that, I also work on creating comercial web pages.

NTSC 720 x 480 30 fps
PAL 720 x 576 25 fps

This is very expensive in Europe, very expensive indeed.
1 weekend at a sommer house may easily kost everything between 150 Euro and 500 Euro depending on the facilities of the house and the time of the year and this is only for 1 weekend .

I've been sitting on my wheel chair the last 2 years, I can stand om my left leg for a short while moving from my wheel chair to the toilet can or to bed with the help of my wife ( she is still teaching tough at primary school but in 2 years she will be in pension too).
I have no hip and a stift knee on the right following many unsuccesfull operations, but how is all this related to making movies ?
I was IT supporter (and webmaster at the public school my wife is teacher at, which I didn't get money for, only axx to all the computers of the school and axx to the one copy of CCE the school owns). Still all those infos are of no relevance to what we like at Doom, making our own movies out of original DVDs or other mpgs.
If we own the movie than it is my personal and Doom's opinion we should be able to do whatever we like with it.
I am a lucky man because I have relatives living in the states and they send me reg 1 dvds long time before they appear in Europe.
I'm a lucky man because I have 4 grownup children and they have children of their own and I make subs translations from english (or french) to danish because my grand children must be 15-16 years old before they full understand the english language. In 3-4 years I'll stop making subs: no need for them anymore (and possibly I'll be dead)
That's why Doom asked me to attend the sub forum.
Now we have exchanged infos about what we do for a living, how bad our health is and the purpose of our stay at Doom.
My conclusions are the same as before : no room for help issueing commercial movies, sorry...

Indeed you're a lucky man. I still don't have any one, with whom I can share my life. I'm alone and I'll stay alone for the rest of my life due to an strange blood problem I have. Ever heard something about "ss" blood type or falcemic condition?

Well that's why I'll stay alone forever, because I don't want that a son or daugther of mine have to experience this. I took the desicion to take that with me to the tomb and I still have a long way to go, I'm only 28 :( .

That's why my friends are very special for me, because they're the only ones who actually share something or share part of their time, with me.

Sorry to hear U have ss haemoglobin ( a condition well known in the mediterrean area of Europe wherefrom my ancesters came).
On the other side U may adopt a child if U get married, telling ur coming wife about ur condition of course.
