Sub Station Alpha has its own manuals, like Sub Station Alpha v4.00 Script Format.rtf
Gabest's tools have their own manuals, like ass-specs.doc and ass-quickref.txt in ./Docs (if you install VobSub) which you need if you'd like to use "Advanced SSA" (so-called ASS...werid name....)

NOTE: You can use most of ASS tags, such as {\fad(0,1000)}, in SSA too, altho some ASS tags might not work in hardsubbing with VSFilter (textsub.vdf would be a lot safer for hardsubbing)
