athos,
I've read somewere (in the ffdshow thread?) that milan is / was working on audio decoding in ffdshow. Do You think its possible for him (or any other) to incorporate ac3filter functionality (DD5.1 encoding for example) in ffdshow?
tack så mycket for the ffdshow builds

ffdshow has some audio capabilities, but imo they are worse (less stable) than ac3filter or mpc. but since a lot of this functionality is in ffmpeg (which ffdshow is based on) it should be possible. also ffdshow allready uses libmad for mpeg audio decoding, and i would imagine libdts should not be impossible either.
however, i think that milan is focusing on other parts of the codec, so i think it would be good if someone else would take a look at the audio parts.

Good news: Valex is alive and already posting in his sourceforge project forum again :)
This is taken down from this forum. Lets hope he manages to find some time again to work on ac3filter:

Hi, I have been using AC3Filter 1.01a RC5 for a while now and was wondering when a new (final or beta) version will be released?

Didn't we wait long enough?
Does anybody know what's happening with Alex?
Is this all about licensing or there are other issues?

why are you so sure?
do you have any internal info that's not known to the public?
if suppose you are right then what's happening with the latest sources? has someone else taken over the work?

I don't know if it's the same person, seems to be, so:
Beatles, aka Randar, is a very famous troll. He goes around forums and IRC channels spreading misinformation as if it was going out of fashion. He got banned from HydrogenAudio, r3mix and Audiocoding.com. He also got banned from HydrogenAudio, foobar2000, and Vorbis IRC channels, and ultimately was k-lined from freenode.
The best way to deal with him is to ignore him.

Well, just check the post by MarkCoolio, written on July 10th. There is hope. And if Beatles really has behind-the-scenes information, he should quote it here and not go around spreading rumours.

So, are we saying nobody has heard anything or seen anything revised/new from Valex since July?
I hope nobody here has upset him... we all need people like him... in whatever capacity he wishes to release his work!

Yes he was upset and chased off by people insisting he release the source...which he SHOULD have done. Either way he won't be coming back here.

Just in case Valex is still reading, i´ve found 2 Bugs so far in RC5.
1) Reconnecting the Input Pin with connected Output Pin results in a Dead Lock.
2) The Channel Mapping in WaveFormatExtensible is wrong. I´ve played a SVCD (2 Channel MPEG Audio) with a 3/2+Sub Setup and the Channel Mapping received was 4. Switching to 2/0 and back to 3/2+Sub resets the Channel Mapping to the correct Value of 63.

I'll post my question here.
I suddenly have some serious issues with ac3filter and i cannot figure out where it went wrong. Today i watched a series fine, but when i wanted to watch another episode tonight i had no sound.
Some analizing made clear freaky things where happening to the matrixmixer ability i am using in ac3filter. In some i can hear some sound in the distance and others i can only hear music. This is all when mapped to a 5.1 setup. When i set it to 2.0 stereo, i get perfect stereo sound. It just doesn't make sense, it worked fine and i didn't install anything related to sound encoding/decoding in the meantime. I'm just hoping it's a common problem, since it doesn't look like ac3filter will ever be updated again.

Hopefully Nvidia will come out with soundstorm2 so we dont need ac3filter anymore :)

12th November 2004, 01:49
Eh? Soundstorm 2 is hardware not software. My AC3 out works fine thanks and works well with AC3filter etc. Perhaps ffdshow's AC3 filter option will get as good as if not better than AC3filter.

Is ffdshow open source? If it is then AC3Filter could be incorporated into it as that's an open source project as well.

Yes.

Some parts of ac3filter are already in ffdshow (matrix mixer). ac3filter is using it's own ac3 decoder (maybe originated in liba52) and ffdshow uses plain liba52. Probably it would be useful to compare these two libraries and select the best one. ac3 encoder would be interesting too.
But AFAIK the problem is, the source code for 1.0RC versions isn't available.

Nvidia Soundstorm encodes any streams to AC3. It saves a couple precent of your cpu and i think it also works for not directx streams as for Apple Quicktime, Videolan, etc, ...

Yes, but a directshow filter should contemplate all users, not only Soundstorm users :)

ffdshow already does AC3 encoding, it is under the audio output settings.

I have kind of unusual use for AC3Filter, but it almost works. I'm wondering if anybody here knows how to solve my problem, and if not, perhaps AC3filter could include this functionality in a future version.
Basically, what I'm trying to do is
AC3 SPDIF -> Audigy 2 platinum SPDIF in -> Stereo x2
The audigy has the built-in ability to decode external AC3 sources, but the problem is that the audio lags behind the video. This is why I would like to use AC3Filter. (if you know how to fix the audio delay using the standard creative method, please let me know, that would help a lot)
In graphedit, I can connect the audigy 2's audio input to AC3Filter and send the output to directshow output, but I get something like chirping noise. I've played with AC3Filter's settings, but I don't see any that help. I've also tried placing various intermediate filters, but none seem to do the trick. I hear it has something to do with "padding" the signal, perhaps.
I have the latest drivers. I'm in windows xp sp2.

"chirping noise" - seems like the data is not decoded as ac3, but simply as pcm

A new (alpha) version is available for testing: ac3filter_1_02a_test1.exe.
I won't publish the direct download link to it 'cos Valex wants to use this version to be intensively tested.
So, to get the version, you have to subscribe on his site and will get the link then in return.
Just subscribe on: http://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/ac3filter-testing
So far he only has 11 volunteers who want to test this version.

What tests should one do to help the project?
I always have a lack of time... but some test will be okay.
Maybe Valex himself shoud (re-)join this thread to give us some further informations - I guess then there´ll be no problems in having only a couple of volunteers for testing :)

I already did some software testings for a software development company: it´s not only playing around with the function of the application, you have to test fixed defined procedures on diffrent systems (OS) and environment (other installed and running apps).
This could take a lot of time  that´s why most developer run from beta1 to beta55 just to count on with RC1 to RC23 :D :D :D

chances are you've got the lite version of powerdvd. you have to by the full program to get dts support. i know because i had the same problem. but now with this it doesnt matter anyway!
