Changing subs from one language to another?

Is it possible to rip DVD subtitles to a text file, translate it, and then put the whole thing back together again? If yes are there guides to this somewhere?

As long as we are talking about the movie only, without menus and with 1 audio file and 1 sub file, there is no prob.

This what I usually do:
1) Rip the dvd to HD
2) "take" the movie only out
3) Use Vobedit to split the vobs
4) Use subrip to make a srt file out of, let's say english text
5) Open in notepad (open the srt file)
6) Respect times and change the text with another language
7) Chech and recheck (eventually in MSword) for bad spelling
8) Use Srt2Sup to make a sup file (respect NTSC or PAL in global settings and review where subs are displayed in the very same proggy)
Adjust the subs to satisfactory position (remember 16:9 or 4:3 or 4:3 letterbox depending on the movie)
9) "Reauthor" in Ifoedit with 1 audio and 1 sub. No matter NTSC or PAL Ifoedit will do the job if audio and video are synchronized
10) If ur stand alone player refuse to play smooth or won't show more than one line of subs, drop celletimes (don't use them) in Ifoedit
11) Close ifoedit
12) Find a good movie where text is satisfactory( talking about colors)
13) Open ifoedit again, open this last ifo and copy subs settings from there
14) open the ifo ifoedit made and paste colors to it
15) Burn
If U wanna keep menus then it ain't that simple as the guides say.
My players (I have 4) play everything but many other players (stand alone ) will refuse to play properly.
This is what I do:
Replace old vobs with new ones, get VTS, use ifoupdate and reget the VTS (in this case U reauthored with celletimes of course.
To my knowledge this is the big prob for some stand alone and I still don't get and don't understand what the h...... the prob is:mad:

Keeping the menu isn't a problem at all. I've never seen a disc with problems.

All the tutorials I can find are Dutch, so I can't help you with a tutorial, but it's basically:

- rename the maestro created vob's to the same vob ID as your original main movie.
- replacing you newly created movie vob's with your old vob's. Don't copy the *_0.vob file.
- run ifoupdate on the movie vob and make sure you have "Transfer VTS_C_ADT Table";"Copy Color Table in each pgc";"Copy audio and subpicture tables";"Autocorrect VTS sectors when updating";"Autoanalyse original ifo"
- Click "update ifo"
- Do a "get vts sectors" on the video_ts.ifo

Dimad will probably be putting up a guide soon, how you can alter the menu background to add a new button in the language menu to select your altered subs.

Some time ago, I wrote a guide:including pictures
http://www.videohelp.com/forum/userguides/197950.php on how to do it. However, it does not contain the IfoUpdate part (to keep the menus). Please note that you can also find subtitles (already translated) on the internet, Believe me, it will save you a whole lot of work if you can just download them.

BTW This guide doesn't mention SubRemap (from the author of srt2sup), which allows you to remap the colors.

If you hang on a little and watch the subtitle forum, I will upload my SubtitleCreator program (still not 100% bugfree, however) that has some improvements.

You can always change the color manually in IfoEdit if you mess up somewhere.

@Mirx, Maestro's fine for single PGC titles but if a title is multi-PGC then it's Scenarist territory (while Maestro does support multi-PGC it's a real pain in the backside). So things can get a bit tricky, but more annoying than anything else in the majority of cases.

Of course, then there are the special cases like multiangle, seamlessless branching (impossible to reproduce), button over video, etc, which require extra special effort in Scenarist.

Well, I've only put the subs on once myself, but almost all major movies a dutch custom subbed, and I've haven't heard of one yet that didn't work.

But your probably right. I'm don't take to much interest in subs, so it's not on the top of my need-to-know list.

I don't take an interest in adding subs either, I have to recreate the structure when using CCE to re-encode the video, and the same re-creation is required when adding subs.

And I'm not probably right, I am right :p

Fortunately though single-PGC movies are very common. When it comes to episodic discs (tv series) then multi-PGC is extremely common.
