subs on screen too long what is wrong?

ok i used subrip to get subs and created a new
sub based on the old one but my subs stay on (dvd) screen
mostly till a new sub arrives
what am I doing wrong

OK, You don't give enough information about what are you doing, I think you are using Str2Sub to get the DVD subs, aren't you?
If that's the case, look in the Global Settings and make sure that the option "Auto Wrap Subtitles" is not active.

I used subrip to get a subtitle from the vob's
(English) and then created a Polish Sub based on the same timings
(Note for some reason vobedit is creating supfiles with the wrong initial offset when you remux in ifoedit the new subs from subrip are in sync the originals are out of sync with the movie)

first problem all the subs on one line

this was due to my translation softwarechanging the tag {T to{ T
I just used find and replace in word to fix this one

2nd problem subs on screen too long.

Subtitle workshop has an option to recalculate subtitle durations
based on letter word and title. under edit/timings/automatic durations. default works nicely i think.

3rd problem subtitle not showing up after remuxing in ifo edit.
(invisable sub).

This was caused by somehow getting the timings starting at the end of the movie. I think I did it by ripping 1st sub in subrip then ripping a 2nd then a 3rd only the first shows up on screen the others are in the file but the times are wrong.

Again subtitle workshop comes to the rescue and lets me get my subtimings from my first ripped file ( and then applying automatic durations)

ok now i go on to srt to sup and create a sup file (get supremap to play with the colors later) after ifoedit rebuilds the vob's and ifo files.
I don't know how to preserve italic yet but i am working on it

Well, I think you should use Str2Sup for that job. Ripp the subs whit SubRip (I suggest srt format) and then make the edition, translation and convert the srt files into sup, with Str2Sup. I've made this job many times and it works perfectly.
For the italics: put "<i>" at the bigining and "</i>" at the end of the text: example: <i>This text</i>, and then you will have italics after you mux all the DVD with IfoEdit.

I have found with Subrip you can save in ssa format
this preserves the italics, and then this can be loaded into
subtitle workshop for tweaking.

it also has a translate mode which allows you to load your translated sub alongside your english sub which is very useful i used it to
convert my Polish subs into Italics where the english subs were in italics.

probably my translation software would have preserved the italic tag
but i already had done too much work with the original english text
to make it worth starting again.

Well, srt format can also preserve italics, I'm not sure, but I think all formats are able to preserve italics, however, you can make the translation with Subtitle Workshop, Subtitle Tool, Str2Sup or many oders subtitles programs.
The thing is that you will need Str2Sup to make the final sup file, that's why I recomend to use Str2Sup at once.
Of course, you can use all the subtitle programs you like, but that's gonna make the entire work much longer.

do you mean srt2sup? this i have (i think str2sup is a typo)
Only problem is it doesn't recognise the italic tags well i cant make it work this way (unless I was to make global font italic perhaps)
and then join the subtitle file maybe it would work this way.

So what else can make sup?
or do i need to use maestro or something like this

You will not see the italics with Srt2Sup, just put the "<i>, </i>" (if you ripped the subs well, this marks are going to be already there) as I told you, then create the sup file and mux the entire movie with IfoEdit, after that, the italics are going to be there.

I tried this but finished up with lines like this
<i>whoops not quite right </i>
