Media Player Classic and Subtitles

Hi,

I've been waiting five days to post this freaking question. Anyway, here goes:

I have the latest version of Media Player Classic. I recently created a matroska video with an embedded subtitle stream... however, I can't activate them using MPC. I can use the XML chapters I created, and I can switch audio tracks, but as far as MPC is concerned, there are no subtitles. Multiple muxes with different settings can't seem to fix this.

Then I thought maybe I was just doing something wrong. So I opened up some OGM and MKV files I *know* have subtitle streams (because I had opened them in Core Media Player), and MPC wasn't reading them, either. According to MPC, they didn't have subtitles either. What gives?

I have the latest version of VobSub installed on my PC, so that can't be a problem.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

What graphic card you have?

It's important, because MPC can't display subtitles on older cards - it uses some DirectX 8 features for that. For example it works not on Voodoo 3 cards.

I have a Radeon 7200 series card. I forgot to mention in my last post that previous versions of MPC *have* allowed me to toggle subtitles on and off.

Ever since I uninstalled the Core Media Player my whole PC has been screwed up (when it comes to videos, at least). The second I uninstalled it, I no longer could play MKV or OGM files.

So, I did a little research. I found and manually installed everything needed to run MKV and OGM files (splitters, DLLs, registry entries, etc.). Didn't work. Nothing worked until I reinstalled TCMP. I HATE that freaking player... it takes up way to many system resources and takes forever to load. MPC is so much better--that's why I'm so concerned about this issue.

So, anyway, after uninstalling TCMP a second time, I *have* to use MPC's native matroska splitter in order for MKVs to work. For some reason it won't recognize the one I downloaded straight off of SourceForge. What the hell did TCMP do to my PC!?

I suspect TCMP has *something* to do with why MPC doesn't recognize subtitles on my PC. I'm very angry at those TCMP bastards; their player takes over my PC more than AOL does!

i think you forgot to actually register the filters (CLI: "regsvr32 filter.ax" or .dll) ..sorry if that offends you, but the symptoms look like you forgot that (TCMP probably registered them, eventually unregistering present ones, on install and unregistered them again on uninstall - thus leaving you with missing/unregistered filters).

I am sorry to hear you are having an issue. If you think there is an issue with our installer..... here is the NSIS that is in our TCMP 4.xx SDK (based on NSIS 1.8):

Anybody can freely look at it, make modifications and submit the changes. As a matter of fact the upcoming TCMP RC6 should include an updated NSIS installer with many more options to give the user more control both during installation and when uninstalling it too... this should keep those like yourself happy.

Toff informed me there is a registry error for our NSIS that has been corrected.

I realize I probably sound very harsh and rude... I'm sorry for that. I'm just totally confused.

Anyway, I checked and made sure all the files were registered. I used the "regsvr32.exe /s" Run command to do so.

Here are the files that I registered:

matroskasplitter.ax (latest)
matroskamuxer.ax (latest)
ogg.dll
oggds.dll
vorbis.acm
vorbis.dll
vorbisenc.dll

I also once again uninstalled and reinstalled VobSub 2.23. Nothing changed.

If I don't use MPC's internal MKV splitter, the player crashes after a few seconds. If I use the internal splitter, the video, audio, and chapters work fine, but the subtitle stream isn't recognized.

I'm totally, utterly confused. I'm out of ideas.

Well, for some inexplicable reason the subtitles started working. My head is about to explode. O_O

Anyway, now I have a new problem. The subtitles won't appear below the 16:9 video when I maximize it--they stay on the video itself. This has never happened to me before.

I'd like to be able to put that bottom black "canvas" bar to good use... but right now, nothing I do within the DirectShow VobSub settings seem to change anything. Those subtitles stick to the video image like glue, refusing to go down into the black.

Could it be SSA settings within the subtitle document itself? I doubt it...

In Vobsub, check the extend to 4:3 and apply changes. Close the dialog window. Close your video and player. Now, open the video again. Subtitles should go below the blakbars. If anyway, it still 'too' high for your taste, just override the position in X and Y (Vobsub main window).

If it still don't work, then it's maybe the ssa file (I don't know because I only use srt).

PS: If you still have your subtitles not showing, it's probably an issue due to installing/uninstalling register problem. So, my tip: uninstall vobsub and reinstall it ;)
