COMDLG32.OCX for sub2sami !?

Hi.

I've downloaded sub2sami.zip and on extraction there are three files:

1. Iron_Giant.smi
2. Pi.smi
3. Sub2Sami.exe

Running the .exe in Win Me gives this error message:

Failed to load 'CommonDialog' from COMDLG32.OCX. Your version of COMDLG32.OCX may be outdated. Make sure you are using the version of the control that was provided with your application.

COMDLG32.OCX is an activeX control file (dating 1997) in my windows/system. Where do I get an updated file ? Micro$oft ? And then I just replace mine with that one ? Please tell me before I make my OS unusable. I'm running DirectX 9.0b if that's in any way related to the problem.

What version of Windows are you running? Most likely, you need to apply the latest service pack, or at least extract that file from such service pack and register it using regsvr32. That OCX also used to some with Visual Studio service packs. Either way, you should be able to get it from Microsoft site.

I am running Windows Me 4.90.3000 (c) Micro$oft 1981-2000. I'm sorry, can you please elaborate your answer a little more ?
And can running the program under Windows xp solve the issue ?

Yes, the best solution would be switching to XP. Anyway, here's that OCX on the MS web site: http://activex.microsoft.com/controls/vb6/COMDLG32.CAB
You have to copy it along with the .INF file to c:\windows\system32, right click on the .INF and select Install. If that doesn't work, open command prompt and type:
regsvr32 c:\windows\system32\comdlg32.ocx

Don't forget to back up the original file before doing this.

I can open the command prompt and run the .OCX as you have said. But will that need that infernal .INF file ? :)

You can use Subtitle Workshop to convert the file to SAMI or many other formats anyway. It doesn't need any OCX nor Visual Basic runtime files :)

The latter is a text file with installation instructions for Windows. Not sure whether WinMe will handle it correctly; if not, try regsvr32 method. The deal here is that if you simply copy the new OCX files over the old one, it might not work properly.

DeKSoft's suggestion is eminently acceptable. Dimmer's explanation is famously instructive. I have to do both: the first one for immediate functionality, and the second one for that age-old instinct of Homo sapiens: darkness is scary and should be avoided at all costs, so let's go through it.

I can't say I'm not a little concerned about the way you have used a capital (upper-case) Y in addressing me in the second person. Such capitals are reserved for God, or so I thought. I feel that I am already up there in the clouds with a halo around my head .:) My insurance agent will start phoning for the undertaker if he spots your post.
